Chapter 888 Investigating the Truth
Charles was stuck in the ICU for three days and nights. Dude was in a coma, but at least he wasn't getting any worse.
By day four, they moved him to a VIP ward without a hitch.
Hannah, even though she was barely holding it together, wouldn't leave his side. She made sure to be there for those precious few minutes of visiting time every afternoon.
Patricia and Carol camped out right outside the ICU, leaning on each other when they needed a break.
Stella hung out in the ward with Hannah.
Meanwhile, Martin, Maximilian, and Randy were busy cleaning up the mess from the car crash.
Charles had blown through a red light and caused the whole thing. No one died, but three people were in pretty bad shape. After a bunch of emergency treatments, they were still touch and go.
Martin, Maximilian, and Randy met with the families and handed over two million bucks each, promising to cover all future medical bills.
If the worst happened and the patients didn't make it, they also agreed to cover funeral costs.
The payout was so generous that the families couldn't really argue. They took the money and signed the settlement papers.
For those who weren't as badly hurt, Martin gave them a million each, and they signed off too.
Just like that, the whole car accident mess was sorted out.
But Charles was still out cold in his hospital bed. Since the crash, something felt off to him.
On the way to the police station, Maximilian asked, "You think someone messed with the car? There's a problem?"
Martin's face got all serious, "This feels way too familiar!"
It was so familiar that Martin almost thought Hunter had come back from the dead.
Even though he was talking to himself, Maximilian and Randy heard him.
Randy asked, "Familiar? Martin, did you figure something out?"
Martin's mind wandered, and he started to remember, "Over ten years ago, Hunter did the same thing to go after your mom."
Randy was like, "What do you mean?"
Martin went on, "It was snowing like crazy that day. He messed with my car, made me crash! But I got lucky 'cause the snow slowed me down. When I realized I couldn't brake, I steered the car to minimize the damage."
If he hadn't handled it right, he would've been toast.
Maximilian was confused, "But isn't Hunter dead? He's been gone for over ten years."
Martin shook his head, "Maybe I'm just imagining things. Let's wait till we get to the police station to find out."
Randy nodded, "Wyatt just texted me. He's on his way to the station too! He's got all the stuff you asked for."
"Okay," Martin said, leaning back in his seat, deep in thought.
From the moment Charles crashed, Martin had a weird feeling, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
When they got to the police station, Wyatt was already there, waiting at the entrance.
Next to Wyatt was Police Chief Vincent Bailey.
As soon as they got out of the car, Vincent greeted them with respect.
Even though the Langley Group's HQ wasn't in Country D, Nexus Holdings Corporation often donated to the police station! And the guy in the accident was the president of IntelliMerge Technologies Company.
If this wasn't handled right, Vincent's job could be on the line.
After Martin got out of the car, Wyatt handed him the documents and walked with them into the station, giving a quick rundown of the situation.
Wyatt laid it all out, "Here's the inspection timeline and report for Mr. Watson's car. Every check-up is logged. The car's brand new, bought this year, and I personally take it in for inspection every month. The car was fine, but after the crash, we found the brakes were shot."
Martin stopped for a sec, then kept moving up the steps into the police station.
Wyatt kept going, "I pulled the dashcam footage. It shows Mr. Watson went to see Hannah, but first, he hit up a breakfast spot. When he got there, the brakes were fine. But after he left, they were toast! It was early, not many cars around, so he was driving faster than usual. That's why he blew through the red light."
Martin's face tightened. Another brake issue, huh?
Messing with the brakes was the easiest way to cause a crash. It could kill someone without leaving a trace. Hunter had used the same trick back in the day.
If Charles hadn't been lucky—few cars on the road, a high-end car with airbags that worked—he'd probably be dead.
Using this method to kill someone was the worst because it put a bunch of innocent people at risk.
No matter what beef they had, the other drivers were innocent.
Martin followed Vincent to the office.
While Wyatt was filling Martin in, Vincent was all ears.
Vincent wasn't dumb; he got the gist. A perfectly good car, fine one minute, and the brakes fail the next? Something was definitely fishy.
Wyatt said, "I hacked into the road surveillance system and found this."
Ignoring Vincent's twitchy face, he pulled out his laptop, set it on Vincent's desk, and brought up the road surveillance video.
The footage showed the area near the breakfast spot.
Even though it was early, the breakfast place was hopping.
Charles had to search for a while before finding a parking spot in the lot across the street. The lot belonged to a mall that opened at nine, so there were still spots available.
After parking, Charles headed to the breakfast joint.
He was in there for a good half hour before coming out with his food.
It took him about five minutes to walk back to the parking lot, including the time at the crosswalk.
The video was a bit grainy, obviously zoomed in, which messed with the quality.
After grabbing his breakfast, Charles got in his car and took off.
It was about a ten-minute drive from the breakfast spot to Queen's Boulevard West, where the crash happened.
Vincent was puzzled about why Wyatt was showing him this footage. Just as he was about to ask, Wyatt hit the return key.
The surveillance switched to another scene.
This one was in the mall parking lot.
Wyatt explained, "I hacked into the mall's surveillance system to get this!"
On the screen, a guy wearing a mask and a hat showed up.
Since it was early, the parking lot was pretty empty. Including Charles, there were only five people, all heading to the breakfast spot across the street.
They parked and quickly left.
But this one guy, looking all shady, walked straight to Charles's Maybach after scoping out the lot.
