Chapter 647 Feeling strange
Patricia returned to the capital of the Country D late at night.
The hospital ward was already closed at this time, and she didn't want to go back to worry Martin, so she went to the hotel.
During their time in the Country D, they had been staying at a hotel.
Even after recognizing Kaleb later on, despite Kaleb's repeated requests for her to move in with him, she never agreed.
One reason was the proximity to the hospital.
Secondly, she could take turns resting with Ryan, and it might be inconvenient for Ryan to stay at the Taylor Residence.
Thirdly, she felt scared.
She always remembered that she was not Kaleb's biological daughter.
So besides saving Martin, she didn't dare to get anything else from Kaleb.
At night, Patricia tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep no matter what.
She almost watched the sky outside gradually brighten.
Unable to bear it any longer after daybreak, she called Maximilian to inquire about Kaleb's condition.
The call was quickly answered, and Maximilian's voice was hoarse, filled with fatigue. "Patricia, I'm sorry to have worried you! We are on our way back now," he said.
"How is Kaleb?" Patricia asked.
Even through the phone, Maximilian could sense something off about her.
"You, you didn't sleep all night?" Maximilian asked.
Patricia didn't directly answer his question, persistently asking, "Is Kaleb okay?"
Maximilian chuckled. "Don't worry! Uncle is fine! Joe and Billy are here! With them by his side, Kaleb's mood has improved a lot! Don't take Uncle's words to heart, he's angry now. He hasn't said a word to me since you left. Don't leave yet. Let me calm him down first, then we can talk properly."
Upon hearing that Kaleb was okay, Patricia felt a bit relieved.
"Take care of Kaleb, I'm fine!"
Maximilian nodded. "Good! Take care of Martin these days."
He was worried that Patricia hadn't taken his words to heart, so he couldn't help but remind her, "Remember, don't leave. I have something to tell you!"
Patricia nodded and promised, "Okay! I won't leave for now."
After ending the call, Patricia dared not rest. She got up, cleaned herself up, and then went to the pharmacy to buy some medicine.
Although she hadn't studied with Kaleb for long, she still remembered Martin's medication very clearly.
Fortunately, Ryan was smart and took all the medicine from the Taylor Residence to prevent any mishaps before it was too late.
As Patricia searched for the medicine on the balcony, Ryan approached her with the medicine, excitedly saying, "Patricia, guess what, Kaleb has already prepared Martin's next dose of medicine in advance!
However, there was only one dose, and no prescription was written.
"Can you identify the medicines inside? If we give Martin these medicines for a few more days based on this, will he get better?" Ryan asked.
Patricia's eyes lit up at the news, she happily took the medicine and sniffed it.
There weren't many pills inside.
But she recognized them all.
The smell was distinct, and she recognized it at a whiff.
"This isn't Martin's medicine, it's for me. Every time Kaleb prepares medicine for Martin, he adjusts it based on his recovery, he wouldn't switch it so many days in advance."
Ryan's face fell with a disappointed "Ah."
Patricia sat down weakly on a stool, feeling guilty. "I mentioned having a slight sore throat the day before, I didn't expect him to remember it and prepare sore throat tea for me the next day."
But before she could take it, things took a turn.
And now it had come to this.
Ryan pondered, "To be frank, he's really good to you! I've lived for over twenty years, seen the struggles in wealthy families, but I've never seen a father who genuinely cares for his daughter like this. Martin, Randy, and I haven't had the luck of a good father. If, if he really is your father, Patricia, your life would be truly perfect. You have a loving grandfather, four cousins, and Martin, and now a good father."
It was an enviable life!
Feeling down, Patricia said, "It's because of this that I feel even more guilty! I shouldn't deceive an old man for my own selfish reasons."
Ryan fell silent.
The deed was done, and nothing more could be done to remedy it.
After finding the medicine, Patricia brought a cup of water to Martin's bedside.
Martin first tested the water's temperature, made sure it wasn't too hot, then tilted his head back to swallow the medicine.
Patricia immediately handed him a tissue.
After wiping off the water residue from the corner of his mouth, Martin slowly asked Patricia, "Where has Margaret been living for the past twenty years?"
Patricia placed the bowl on the bedside table. "She hasn't gone far, in a small town over five hundred kilometers away from here."
Upon hearing this, Martin subtly furrowed his brows.
"She's been going by Margaret for these years? No name change?"
After carefully considering the timeline, Patricia nodded. "It seems not! When I went there last night, Margaret's tombstone was engraved with Margaret. There was no photo! Judging by the timeline, the tombstone should have been carved by Margaret's friend or neighbor!"
Margaret had an accident shortly after she and Kaleb recognized each other.
It had been almost two weeks now.
The body couldn't have been left there until Joe found it.
Moreover, no one knew Joe would find it back then.
So, either her friend carved it, or a friend did.
And that person didn't have Margaret's photo, otherwise there wouldn't be no photo on the tombstone.
So, their relationship with Margaret wasn't that close.
Martin's eyes darkened as he fell into deep thought.
Ryan said, "Dying in a strange place, Margaret had it tough! Not even a proper funeral."
Seeing Martin suddenly silent, seemingly lost in thought, Patricia couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong? What are you thinking about?"
Martin looked at her seriously and voiced his doubts, "Don't you find it strange?"
Patricia and Ryan exchanged a glance, asking in unison, "What's strange?"
Martin analyzed, "First, Margaret never left the Country D and has been living only over five hundred kilometers away from here. Second, she hasn't changed her name."
Patricia and Ryan still didn't catch on, so they asked again, "So?"
Martin sighed, "The Taylor Residence is the wealthiest family in the Country D, and they have a partnership with the Hill Residence! With Maximilian's abilities and resources, how could he not find Margaret?"
If Margaret had changed her appearance or name, it would be understandable that Maximilian couldn't find her.
But she hadn't changed her face or name, and after over twenty years, why hadn't Maximilian found her?
And now he wanted Patricia to impersonate her?
