Chapter 70 Martin Sees Debbie's True Nature
Aubrey and Emily both felt a sense of foreboding.
Their premonition was soon proven accurate.
"You two will have a duel, and whoever wins can leave this place freely. On the other hand, the loser will be thrown into the sea as shark bait." Martin's words were calm, but carried a deadly aura.
Aubrey and Emily were both stunned, staring at him incredulously.
"Us, a duel?"
Especially Aubrey, she covered the wound on her abdomen and fear filled her face.
Martin gazed at them with a smile. The answer was self-evident.
Aubrey and Emily shook their heads simultaneously, saying, "No, we are best sisters who have shared joys and sorrows for twenty years. We would never harm each other! You won't succeed in driving a wedge between us."
"You have ten minutes. If you cannot resolve the outcome, you will both be fed to the sharks." Martin wasted no more time and stood up, elegantly adjusting his cuffs before departing.
Aubrey shouted in frustration, "This is unfair! We didn't lay a hand on Patricia. Why should our lives be at stake?"
Emily chimed in, "Yes! We are the ones who are hurt, and yet we were brought here. We have no grudges against Patricia; we were only doing our job for money."
Unfortunately, Martin didn't answer their words.
With a loud "bang," the basement door closed shut.
In the dim and damp cellar, only Aubrey and Emily remained. The faint light flickered due to unstable voltage, emitting a buzzing sound.
Aubrey and Emily looked at each other, but neither moved.
Afraid that Emily might take action, Aubrey forced a smile and said, "We have been good sisters, growing up together since childhood. I will definitely not turn against you for self-preservation. We live together, we die together."
Fearful of the lack of agreement, she added, "Right?"
Emily smiled and nodded, "Right, even if we die together, we absolutely cannot harm each other. It's certain that we shouldn't
"Let Martin's conspiracy succeed."
"Yes, yes, yes!" Aubrey nodded incessantly, glancing sideways.
Emily also glanced sideways.
Time stood still for a second.
The smiles on their faces gradually disappeared, replaced by a grim expression.
Suddenly, Aubrey grabbed a chair, while Emily grabbed a stick from the ground, swiftly attacking each other.
Looking at the stick in Emily's hand, Aubrey sneered, "Weren't we supposed to be sisters? Weren't we not supposed to harm each other? Hmph..."
Emily retaliated without hesitation, "Didn't you also say we would live and die together? What a load of nonsense about being sisters! Bullshit..."
Aubrey coldly snorted, "People will do anything to survive. That's what I want!"
"Same as I!"
"Is that so? Let's see who can walk out of here alive today!" Aubrey declared, kicking Emily forcefully in the abdomen.
Emily stumbled back two steps, the pain causing cold sweat to break out.
Aubrey seized the opportunity to strike, smashing the chair viciously over Emily.
Emily's quick reflexes allowed her to block with the stick, then she tackled Aubrey to the ground, intentionally pressing her knee onto Aubrey's wound--
They wrestled with each other, refusing to yield, their actions filled with cruelty, as if determined to annihilate the other.
Sounds of hitting and smashing.
Roars.
Pained cries.
Echoed back and forth.
Martin stood outside the iron gate, mocking and relishing the thrilling scene through the ventilation hole above.
Good sisters?
Stick together through thick and thin?
In life and death situations, people show their true colors. At critical moments, they would do anything to survive.
Aubrey's abdomen was injured and in no time, Emily beat her until she had no breathing.
Thinking that she would soon be able to leave this place, Aubrey felt extremely relaxed. She eagerly presented her victory to Martin as he walked in, saying, "Mr. Langley, look, I won. Can I leave now?"
Martin cast a contemptuous glance at her and said to the bodyguard beside him, "Throw them both into the sea."
Emily froze, "Why? You just said that the winner can leave."
Martin remained expressionless, "I detest violence among yourselves. If you had persevered just now, I might have released both of you. But you shouldn't have betrayed your promise and put each other in mortal danger just to survive."
Emily collapsed.
Her eyes went dull with despair.
The flickering hope she had managed to ignite shattered once again, plunging her back into despair. The bodyguards received Martin's instructions and dragged the two of them out.
Not long after dealing with the three of them, Timothy was brought in.
Martin ordered his men to take him directly to where Cody was being handled, in a secret compartment.
Timothy had his face covered, unable to see what was inside. The overwhelming scent of blood and the unknown fear stimulated every nerve in his body.
"I'm Timothy, who are you? How dare you tie me up here? Do you know the consequences?"
"Corrupting officials is a serious crime that merits punishment," Martin indicated, instructing his bodyguard to remove his blindfold.
As the light reached his eyes, Timothy saw Cody lying in a pool of blood, his life hanging by a thread. He was so shocked that his legs almost gave way, nearly collapsing to the ground.
He forced himself to remain composed and looked towards Martin, concealed in the darkness.
"Is it you who did this to Cody? This is a society governed by the rule of law. How dare you treat government officials like this? Shouldn't you be sent to prison?"
Martin's thin lips curled up slightly as he calmly emerged from the shadows.
With each step, his figure became clearer, causing Timothy's pupils to dilate. When Martin stood fully exposed before him, Timothy was completely horrified, collapsing onto the ground.
"Mr. Langley!"
"Who ordered you to go after Patricia?" Martin looked down at him, his eyes clouded with an icy darkness that sent shivers down Timothy's spine.
"I... I..." Timothy stuttered, still contemplating how to respond. Suddenly, he felt a sticky liquid in the palm of his hand. Opening it, he saw his hand covered in fresh blood, instantly realizing he couldn't lie and hastily said, "It was... It was Miss Brown!"
"Debbie?"
Timothy nodded vigorously, his words stumbling out. "Yes, Miss Brown! She... she called me and said that you, Mr. Langley, asked her to pass on a message to take care of Miss Watson, who had just arrived at the inn. She is your fiancée, and naturally, I didn't doubt her words, so I instructed my godson, Cody, to handle the matter."
Martin sneered and hooked his lips.
Approaching Timothy, he ruthlessly kicked his shoulder. Timothy fell to the ground, and Martin stepped on his face, disdainfully patting his pants leg, glancing at him with a cold smile. "You really think I'm that foolish? So easy to deceive?"
With his face pressed tightly against the blood-soaked ground, the scent of blood assaulting his senses, Timothy felt nauseated.
"I'm telling the truth! It was Miss Brown who ordered me!"
Martin's expression turned cold and stern, his eyes filled with anger as he stared him down, not wasting breath on useless talk. "Was it Debbie's idea, or was it using my name? You have one minute to think it through."
As his lie was exposed, Timothy's carefully maintained composure crumbled in an instant, hastily saying, "It was Miss Brown's idea. No, it wasn't Mr. Langley's idea."
Martin playfully raised his thin lips. "Hmm?"
Though it was just a single word, Timothy understood its meaning and explained, "Miss Brown said that if I helped destroy Miss Watson, she would find a way for me to become the current bureau chief. Miss Brown is Mr. Langley's fiancée, and I genuinely thought that this was Mr. Langley's order. I didn't know it was solely Miss Brown's idea..."
Having received his answer, Martin released Timothy.
"Keep an eye on them, no one is allowed to go out without my command."
After saying these words lightly, his figure completely disappeared into the dark room.
Debbie.
Very good. So good--
All these years, she had disguised herself so well. She had successfully deceived him the entire time.
