Chapter 680 Billy's Body Found
As Carol stood hesitating at the door, the butler suddenly opened it. Seeing her standing there, he was first surprised, then a long-lost smile appeared on his face.
"Carol, you're finally back! It's perfect timing. Go and comfort Mr. Hill and Mrs. Hill. If it continues, their health will deteriorate."
Carol's heart leaped to her throat.
"How are they?"
The butler sighed. "Ever since Billy had an accident, they've been locked in their rooms, weeping without eating or drinking!"
The message was confirmed once again, and Carol felt the world spinning around her, almost stumbling.
"You... are you saying that Billy... really had an accident?"
The butler realized his mistake and quickly said, "You didn't know?"
Then, feeling guilty, he lowered his head. "Carol, if you didn't know, forget what I just said!"
Although Joe had instructed him not to tell Carol about it for the time being.
But seeing Carol's red and swollen eyes, and considering that it had been almost half a month since the incident, the butler thought she already knew, so he didn't hide it anymore.
Carol said, "How could I not know about such a big event!?"
The butler hesitated, unsure if she was telling the truth or deceiving him.
Regardless of what he thought, Carol pressed on. "How did Billy die? Why is it related to Kaleb?"
She knew that if she went to ask her parents now, they were too heartbroken to provide any answers.
Might as well ask the butler first, understand the situation, and then go to her parents.
The butler, afraid of saying the wrong thing, remained silent.
Carol grew impatient. "With such a big event happening, are you still not prepared to tell me? If you don't tell me, how can I comfort my parents? Hurry up, I will find out sooner or later."
Realizing she had a point, the butler hesitated for a moment before revealing everything he knew.
"Half a month ago, a driver reported to the police that he saw Patricia pushing Billy off the Neon Bridge with his own eyes! In a fit of anger, Mr. Hill skipped the interrogation and confession process and directly filed the case. But Patricia is the biological daughter of Kaleb. He pleaded with Mr. Hill to spare Patricia, but Mr. Hill refused. Kaleb then withdrew all funding for research, resorting to extreme measures to confront Mr. Hill. Under pressure from society and the United Nations, Mr. Hill negotiated with Kaleb. I do not know the content of the negotiation. All I know is that after the negotiation, Mr. Hill locked himself in the study. Mrs. Hill also spends her days locked in her room, weeping."
Carol was overwhelmed once again.
"Patricia pushed Billy off the bridge? Billy is such a good swimmer. Even if she pushed him, he should have been able to swim back! How could he die?"
The butler shook his head. "I don't know about that! Anyway, it's been almost half a month since the incident, Billy hasn't returned, and the search team hasn't even found the body! Actually, it makes sense! The water currents beneath the Neon Bridge flow with such formidable velocity. So, how could they find the body?"
After understanding the situation, Carol forced herself to calm down and went to find Susan in the room.
The room was pitch black, with no lights on and the curtains tightly drawn, blocking any light from entering.
Upon entering the room, Carol went to open the curtains. The room, which was dark just a moment ago, suddenly brightened up. She saw Susan lying in bed, covered tightly by the blanket.
Carol walked over and pulled down the blanket covering Susan's head.
Susan, whether asleep or not, didn't move at all.
Seeing her like this, Carol's heart twisted, and she choked out, "Mom..."
At the sound of her voice, Susan's body visibly stiffened for a moment. Then, mechanically turning her head, she saw that it was indeed Carol. She sat up, embracing her tightly.
"Carol, you're back. You're finally back... "
These days, Susan really wanted to confide in Carol.
However, she was afraid that Carol wouldn't be able to handle the news of Billy's accident, so she had been reluctant to tell her.
Even though Susan knew Carol had been taking care of her enemy in the hospital, she still didn't summon her back.
Carol hugged her tightly, and they cried together. "Mom, Billy had an accident. Why did you keep it from me? Why didn't you tell me? I'm his sister..."
Susan cried, her voice choked with emotion. "I just didn't want you to be sad... but... but my heart is just too painful... Billy has left me forever."
They embraced each other, crying profusely.
After comforting Susan for a while, Carol finally persuaded her to drink a bowl of soup before she fell asleep.
Once Susan was asleep, Carol went to the adjacent study to find Joe.
The study was no better than the bedroom.
The room was pitch black; the curtains tightly drawn; and Joe sat on a leather chair, with his head resting on the desk.
Carol walked over and pulled open the curtains.
Hearing the movement, Joe raised his head, the sudden sunlight stinging his eyes. He instinctively shielded his eyes with his hand; and after a while, he could see the person standing by the window.
"Carol? Why are you back?"
Carol walked up to Joe, holding his hand. "Dad, with such a big event happening, if I hadn't come back, were you not planning to tell me?"
Her usually carefree demeanor was replaced by a serious expression.
After several days and nights of endurance, Joe's eyes were bloodshot, with his gaze dim.
He lowered his head, his voice hoarse from not speaking for a long time.
"Why tell you? It would only add another person to the grief! Billy can't come back to life."
Carol squatted down, looking up at his face. "Dad, I've grown up. I can share the burden with you now! Tell me, is it true? Did Patricia push Billy?"
Thinking about it again, Joe's anger surged once again.
"Yes! It was her! I will make sure she pays for what she did to your brother."
Carol sighed, "Dad, Billy is such a good swimmer! Even if Patricia had pushed him, he couldn't have drowned! I think Billy might still be alive."
Joe stared straight into her eyes. "Even you think he's not dead?"
Carol was taken aback. "Besides me, who else?"
Joe fell silent suddenly.
Anxiously shaking his arm, Carol urged. "Tell me! Who else?"
Joe felt Carol was now an adult and should know what she needed to know, so he told her everything that had happened during that time.
After hearing the whole story, Carol became even more convinced of her suspicions.
"I think Kaleb is right. Billy must be alive! Although I don't know why he's hiding, maybe something happened in between! But Country D is so big, how can you only give Kaleb a week? Isn't that deliberately making things difficult for him?"
Joe turned away without looking at her.
"A week is already the limit! It's the biggest concession I can make."
Carol continued persuading earnestly, "Dad, just give them a little more time! I've known Kaleb for twenty years; I understand him; he wouldn't lie to us!"
"No!" Joe refused without hesitation.
Carol grew frustrated. "Dad, do you really want Billy to be dead? Are you so eager to conclude? Don't you want him to be alive?"
Stunned by her outburst, Joe was speechless.
Carol exclaimed, "Don't you find it strange? Clearly, Patricia is Kaleb's biological daughter, but the test results said otherwise! I don't know what really happened or why Billy lied to us! But he did, and that's a fact. He almost caused a rift between Kaleb and Maximilian! And I also know that Kaleb is not that kind of person! Even if it's for my sake, please give him more time!"
Joe was taken aback by Carol.
Under Carol's persuasion, he eventually gave Kaleb another month's extension.
Upon learning that Joe had granted another month's extension, Kaleb was so happy and thanked Carol profusely, sending more people to continue the search for Billy.
However, he never imagined that when they finally found Billy, Billy had already become a corpse, a body so swollen and decomposed that his original appearance was unrecognizable.
