Chapter 184 Charlotte’s Scheme

In a dark and damp little house, a musty stench wafted through the air. A man was lying sprawled on the ground, surrounded by empty bottles. Suddenly, the door creaked open. Charlotte stepped in slowly, having disguised herself carefully with a hat, glasses, and a mask, wrapped up so that not a hint of her could be seen.

Looking disdainfully at the man on the floor, she fetched a bucket of water from the washroom and threw it over him. The drenched, drunken man, instantly sobered up. He wasn’t angry at the rude awakening he received from Charlotte.

"Who are you? How did you get in? What do you want?"

Charlotte squatted down, examining him with contempt. "Your daughter’s close to dying, and you’ve got the nerve to be here drinking. She’s really cursed to have a father like you."

Upon hearing about his daughter, the man broke down completely, crying unashamedly. "I'm useless, I can't save Milly. It's my fault... Milly’s death is on me," he sobs. "I should be the one to die, not Milly. She’s only five, her life has just begun, she shouldn’t be the one to die..."

Charlotte smiles wryly. "Do you want to save your daughter?"

At these words, the man’s eyes brightened like a drowning man who sees a lifeline, clutching Charlotte’s hand. "You can save Milly? I’ll do anything if you can save her."

Charlotte, disgusted by the man’s aged, dirty, cracked hands, fiercely shakes him off. "Let's keep this to talking, there is no need for you to touch me."

The man instantly stopped moving, staring at her in a daze. He listened as Charlotte spoke, with an ominous tone.

”People nowadays prey on the kind and avoid the wicked. They dare to treat you this way only because they see you as powerless and gentle, easy to bully. If you want to save your daughter, then listen to me. I'll tell you what to do."

The man nodded earnestly. "I'm listening, I'm listening. As long as you are willing to save my daughter, I will do whatever you say."

Charlotte nodded in satisfaction, a frightening chill tinging her beautiful eyes, sinister enough to make anyone's skin crawl.

"Do as I say, and your daughter will be fine..."

...

It was Christmas Eve, at Ivara City Hospital. Patricia, had finished her tasks, was ready to head home when, upon taking the elevator to the ground floor of the inpatient department, she heard a commotion and screams.

Quite a crowd had gathered. The hospital director and several leaders hurried over. Driven by curiosity, Patricia walked over to the scene. In the center of the lobby, a disheveled man with a beard was holding a young female nurse hostage. The man was upset, his eyes bloodshot, waving a fruit knife wildly.

"If you don't save Milly today, I'll burn down this hospital with all of us in it," he screamed, his voice laden with intense rage and suffering.

As he spoke, Patricia saw a little girl lying on a bench nearby. In the cold winter, the girl was wearing only a thin hospital gown, her face pale, her eyes tightly shut, she looked like she was on death's door.

The director quickly tried to calm the man down, "Let's talk this through, please let the nurse go first."

The man roared ferociously, "You're trying to deceive me again! You promised you would cure Milly, but now you're telling me she's incurable and suggesting a transfer.”

“I don't believe what you say. My daughter won't live much longer anyway, so I'll take you down with us, as company for Milly's burial." With that, he broke down in inconsolable tears.

The sight of a grown man, crying without any regard for his image, filled all the witnesses with such a profound sense of sadness.

The director, feeling helpless, said with a pained expression, "We have truly done our best with your daughter's illness. Her condition had a low chance of recovery to begin with, especially at such a young age when many treatment options are not viable."

Through his tears, the man yelled, "I don't care, I just want Milly cured, whatever it takes..."

While the director engaged with the man, Patricia quietly asked a doctor nearby, "What's going on?"

The doctor sympathetically whispered in her ear, "His daughter's condition is similar to Randy's, suffering from congenital heart disease. She was transferred to our hospital two years ago. Initially, she was under the care of Professor Brown, but after his incident, she was transferred to Dr. Powell."

“Initially, Professor Brown prescribed the most advanced, and expensive treatment for her, which led to her developing a resistance to the medication. As a result, the standard drugs used to treat heart conditions were no longer effective for her.”

“Now Milly's condition is deteriorating, and Dr. Powell said that Professor Brown's approach has only delayed her treatment. Finding himself powerless, he informed her father to either arrange for her discharge or transfer to another hospital.”

“Their family doesn’t have a lot of money, they aren’t able to afford her treatment anymore. Over the years, they've sold cars and houses to afford their daughter's medical expenses, and now they have nothing left.”

“We truly don't want them to waste any more money, but we never imagined things would turn out this way."

It's Debbie all over again, another Bobby. And now Milly. All of them harmed by Debbie. With those who have been discovered, and those who haven’t, there have been so many people affected by her. Now, the hospital is having to clean up, all the dead bodies left by her.

Patricia, with a frown of irritation creasing her forehead, slowly walked toward the man. "Hello, I'm Patricia. I might have a way to save your daughter without costing you any medical fees. All expenses will be covered by the Angel Foundation."

The Angel Foundation was established by her two years ago, dedicated to helping those with serious illnesses from disadvantaged families.

Hearing her words, the man asked in disbelief, "Is what you're saying true? Can you really save Milly?"

Patricia nodded assertively, "I am Patricia, a world-renowned cardiothoracic professor and the president of the Angel Foundation. I swear on my reputation that I will do everything in my power to cure Milly."

"Are you Professor Watson?"

He was thinking back to what Charlotte told him. To cause a scene until he met a young professor named Patricia, then ask her to save Milly. If she was unwilling to do it, he would find a way to make her agree.

Seeing the man's hesitation, the hospital director, thought he didn’t trust Patricia because of her youth, and quickly explained, “Professor Watson is an authority on heart disease, especially recruited from Country A with a substantial salary.”

“Right now, she is Milly's only hope. As Milly's father, you wouldn't want to miss any chance to save her, would you?"

The information matched the woman's. Could she really be the woman he had been told about? Was she truly Milly's only hope?

The man's expression visibly softened, and the fruit knife he had pressed against the nurse's neck slowly loosened. Patricia seized the opportunity and gradually moved closer.

"Rest assured and entrust Milly to me; I will do my utmost to save her. I also have a son who suffers from a heart condition, so I can empathize with your feelings. I will treat Milly as if she were my own daughter..."

Having heard her words and recalling that enigmatic woman, the man finally chose to trust her. Patricia caught the change in his expression. She leaned in, attempting to take the fruit knife from his hands.

Unexpectedly, before her hand could touch the knife, a doctor's voice suddenly rang out, "Professor Watson, you do not understand Milly's condition. Her illness is beyond cure, and you shouldn't damage your reputation for her sake."

The implication was clear. Milly could not be saved. It was only a matter of time before she would die. Taking on this mess, it would serve no benefit to Patricia.

The confidence which the man had so painstakingly built crumbled in an instant, and the fruit knife in his hand swung uncontrollably towards Patricia.

"You liars, you’ve deceived me...now you want to dupe me again!?!"
