Chapter 953 Reconciliation
Hannah snuggled up against Charles' chest, breathing in that earthy scent of his. Her heart was aching, and she couldn't help but give his chest a couple of light punches. "If this ever happens again, you better not go hiking up that mountain. What if something happens to you?"
'It's pitch black out there, and the mountain path is all rugged. His legs aren't in the best shape either. Thank God he's safe and made it up here. What would she do if something happened to him?' Just thinking about it freaked her out.
Charles hugged her tight and promised, "I won't let anything happen to me! I haven't found you yet! I haven't made you believe that I really love you. How could I even think about dying?"
Hearing him say "die," Hannah gave his chest another light punch. "You're not gonna die. You're only twenty-seven, still a young buck. Don't say stuff like that."
"Okay!" Charles nodded, then spotted something in the distance. He let go of Hannah and pointed excitedly. "Hannah, look, the sunrise."
Hannah looked where he was pointing.
The fiery red sun was creeping up, painting the whole sky red.
It was stunning.
"So beautiful!" Hannah couldn't help but gush, "Even though it's the same sunrise, it feels totally different from last time. Today it seems even more beautiful."
Charles, with his arm around her shoulder, explained, "It's because the weather's different. Last time we came, it was summer. Now it's late fall, and there's this layer of white mist around the sun, giving it a hazy vibe."
Hannah shook her head. "Nah, I think it's because of our state of mind."
The last time she and Charles watched the sunrise, they were just boss and employee.
Today, they were watching it as a couple.
With a different state of mind, what they saw naturally looked different.
Charles smiled but didn't say anything.
No matter the reason, today's sunrise was exceptionally beautiful, more beautiful than any scene he had ever seen.
Hannah leaned on Charles's shoulder. All the conflicts between them over the past days seemed to vanish at this moment. She was wholeheartedly focused on Charles.
No matter how much Charles explained before, she always felt like she was a stand-in for Violet.
Because of this, she had always been resentful. No matter how much Charles explained, she couldn't accept it.
But now, she was completely at peace.
She believed he loved her.
As long as he didn't see her as a stand-in and truly loved her, nothing else mattered.
Hannah suddenly asked, "How's Violet doing now?"
After two days, she could finally face Violet and the situation calmly.
Charles tensed up again, not expecting her to bring up Violet.
Charles explained, "I really only see her as a sister now! Our relationship is over! Yeah, I used to like her a lot, but that was years ago."
Even he found it unbelievable.
He used to like Violet so much and searched for her for seven years. But after meeting Hannah, Violet's image began to fade in his heart.
Decades of feelings faded just like that.
When he met Violet again, besides shock, joy, worry, and surprise, he had no other feelings.
All his love had been poured into Hannah.
Seeing him so nervous, Hannah laughed.
"Don't be nervous. I'm not looking for a fight." As she spoke, she placed his legs on her lap, her slender fingers skillfully massaging them. She smiled. "I just want to know how she's doing. As your girlfriend, I feel I should care about her a bit."
After all, she was the victor now.
She couldn't be so petty as to hold a grudge against a patient.
Charles stared at her for a bit, realizing she was being real. He finally let out a sigh and said, "Not great. I took her to the hospital for a check-up. She had a head injury, which caused her amnesia. Carter got the best doctors in the world, but it hasn't done much. So far, she only remembers me. She’s fighting against getting her memory back. The docs say if she doesn't get over her mental blocks, her head will hurt like crazy at critical moments as a form of protest. We’ve got her seeing a psychologist now, hoping to help her get past these barriers and maybe get her memories back. She’s super weak and mentally fragile. If things don’t go her way, she might do something drastic. My grandma committed suicide because of depression! Violet is Carter's daughter. We searched for her for seven years. Now that we’ve found her, we don’t want another tragedy. That day, she wanted to jump off a building. I had no choice but to lie to her that you and I were just friends. The situation was too urgent, and I didn’t think about how it would hurt you. Hannah, I’m sorry! When the time is right, I’ll tell her about us."
Charles said a lot in one go, making sure to explain the situation again at the end.
He knew that video had hurt Hannah a lot.
Looking back, if it were him, he’d be even angrier.
Hannah smiled and felt relieved. "No need. Didn’t you say her condition isn’t suitable for too much info? If something happens because of you, how will you face Carter in the future?"
Charles held her hand, which was massaging him, and said seriously, "If I don’t tell her, it wouldn’t be fair to you. I love you and can’t let you suffer. If I can’t even give my girl a sense of security, then I’m too irresponsible."
Hearing his words, Hannah felt warm inside.
Hannah said, "Your words are enough! I know you truly like me, and your feelings for Violet are just childhood stuff."
"But..." Charles wanted to say more.
From the moment he knew Hannah was missing, he realized that Hannah was the most important person in the world to him.
From the moment he started climbing to the top of the mountain, he had already made his choice.
No matter what happened, he chose Hannah.
He couldn’t let Hannah suffer.
Even if it meant Violet couldn’t handle it, he had to make a choice. Otherwise, the harm would be greater, hurting both Hannah and Violet.
Hannah knew what he wanted to say. She held his hand firmly and said, "We’ll face it together."
"What do you mean?" Charles looked at her, surprised, not getting what she meant by facing it together.
Hannah said, "Let’s treat Violet first. We’ll talk about everything else after she’s better!"
Charles was stunned.
Hannah smiled. "I get you! Stella was right. Carter almost lost his life for your mom. For that kindness, you can’t hurt Violet. Besides, her illness isn’t terminal; it can be cured. I’m only twenty, so I can wait."
Charles's eyes welled up with tears.
He couldn’t help but cup Hannah’s face and kiss her hard on the lips. "Hannah, thank you. No matter where I take Violet or what treatment she gets, I’ll tell you everything in detail. I won’t let you overthink."
Hannah smiled. "No need! I trust you!"
Charles's heart was filled with warmth.
He was moved by Hannah’s dedication to him.
Just then, Charles's phone rang again.
He took out his phone.
The call was from Violet.
He glanced at the phone, feeling a bit nervous, and then looked at Hannah.
