Chapter 688 A Stolen Kiss
Carol had just left the house when she received a call from Maximilian.
She held back her tears and took a deep breath. "Hey Maximilian..."
Although she tried hard to make her voice sound normal, it still choked up badly.
Maximilian immediately sensed something was wrong and asked with concern, "What's the matter? Have you been crying? What happened? Where are you now?"
A series of questions left Carol's mind in a daze.
"I'm fine! Why are you looking for me?"
Maximilian pursed his lips and asked, "Do you have time? I want to meet you."
Carol glanced back at the luxurious villa, recalling the argument with her parents earlier; and her heart ached. After hesitating for a moment, she nodded in agreement.
Half an hour later, Maximilian and Carol met at a cafe.
Maximilian looked at Carol's red and swollen eyes, feeling extremely sorry for her. He couldn't help but gently stroke her eyes.
His palm was thick and warm.
Carol couldn't help but close her eyes. The grievances she had just experienced with her parents didn't seem so painful anymore.
Maximilian's hand slid down her face. "What happened?"
Carol opened her eyes and smiled at him.
"I'm fine! I haven't been sleeping well these days, so my face is a bit swollen! It'll be better after a couple of days of rest."
On the way there, she bought a bottle of ice water and applied it to both sides of her face. When she got out of the car, she checked, and the swelling had subsided.
It shouldn't be noticeable if you don't look closely.
"Is that so?" Maximilian was somewhat skeptical. "Even if it's swelling, why are there fingerprints?"
Suddenly remembering something, his eyes widened. "Did your parents hit you? Is it because of Patricia?"
Carol didn't want Maximilian to worry, so she shook her head desperately. "No, they didn't! How could my parents hit me! They've been locking themselves in their rooms all these days because of Billy's death. It's hard for me even to see them. How could they have the chance to hit me?"
Maximilian stared into her eyes seriously, confused. "Really?"
Carol forced a smile at him. "Of course, it's true. Would I lie to you?"
Not wanting to continue the topic, she pulled out a chair and sat down, pretending to be casual. "So, what did you want to see me for? Is it about Patricia?"
The situation was urgent; and Maximilian didn't have time to think about anything else. He sat down opposite her and nodded firmly. "Yes, I wanted to see you for Patricia."
Carol lowered her gaze and said sadly, "I also want to help you all! But my parents have completely changed now, becoming very paranoid and listening to nothing."
Maximilian held her hand on the table. "I know! I didn't expect this matter to have such a big impact on Joe! At first, we thought that everything would be fine as long as we found clues to clear Patricia's name. But Joe is too stubborn. He won't listen to anything."
Carol remained silent with her head down. She thought, 'Yes! Dad and mom had lost all reason and wouldn't listen to anything. They even... They even laid hands on me. I had always been the little princess at home, not to mention being hit. They wouldn't even say harsh words to me. But now...'
The more Carol thought about it, the more wronged she felt; and her eyes unknowingly turned red again.
Because she was looking down, Maximilian didn't notice her change and continued, "Joe is determined to have Patricia buried with Billy. No matter what we do, we can't change his mind."
Carol nodded. "Yes! My dad has been blinded by hatred. Even if he sees things, he subconsciously denies them."
In other words, Patricia's fate was sealed.
And Carol was helpless.
Maximilian earnestly said, "So, the only one who can save Patricia now is you."
Carol shook her head, self-deprecatingly. "I can't do anything. My parents just won't listen to me."
If they could, Carol wouldn't have been hit.
Maximilian urgently said, "No, you can!"
Carol heard the certainty in his tone and raised her head slightly, puzzled. "What can I do?"
Maximilian said, "You are Joe's only daughter! Only you can find out where Patricia is being held now! Only you have the means to get the order."
Carol seemed to understand his intention. "You want me to steal my dad's seal and get Patricia out?"
Although Maximilian felt a bit awkward asking her to do this.
But, this was indeed the only way for now.
"I know this may make Joe blame you, but this is the only way to save Patricia now! If... if you find it difficult, I won't force you. We'll think of other..."
Before he could finish the word "way," Carol had already agreed. "I promise you, I'll help you."
"You..." Maximilian didn't expect her to agree so readily, staring at her in astonishment. "If Joe finds out about this, he will blame you; and it will affect the relationship between you and your father. You..."
Carol smiled bitterly.
"I know! But I'm not doing this just for you! I'm also doing it for my dad and mom! My dad has been honest all his life; but after Billy's death, he has done too many wrong things. He's now blinded by hatred. That's why he's doing so many irrational things. When he comes to his senses, he will regret it. I don't want to see him regret it in the future, nor do I want to see a stain on his political career."
Especially after seeing how crazy Joe and Susan were just now.
Carol was really afraid that Joe's political enemies would use this against him in the future.
Maximilian was moved to tears.
"Thank you... thank you... I'm so glad we have you, otherwise we wouldn't know what to do!"
Carol looked at him, holding her hand tightly, a feeling of constriction at her chest impeding her breath.
"Maximilian, with our families having such a conflict... in the future..."
Knowing what she was about to say, Maximilian smiled, "No matter what happens, you are still the dearest sister to me! The matters of our elders won't affect us."
Carol chuckled, her laughter imbued with bitterness and poignancy, tears pooling in her eyes.
How could it not affect them?
At least...
At least, she would never wed Maximilian in this lifetime.
