Chapter 904 Hannah Gets Hit
Lisa was the first to catch on that something was up with him. She grabbed his arm, all freaked out, "Quentin, what's going on? Don't freak me out!"
Quentin was wheezing, trying to say something, but nothing came out.
Right then, Hannah and Austin noticed too and rushed over.
Austin, hands shaking, pulled out his phone, "We gotta call an ambulance. Quentin's in bad shape. We need help, like, now."
Hannah started bawling, "Dad, what's wrong? Are you okay?"
Quentin, struggling, put his hand on Hannah's shoulder, gripping her clothes tight. With all his might, he managed to say one word, "Break up."
Hannah cried even harder, "Dad, why are you doing this to me?"
Quentin couldn't hear her, just kept saying, "Break up, break up with him."
Hannah didn't want to agree but was too scared to piss him off more, so she just shook her head.
Seeing her still not agreeing, Quentin couldn't catch his breath, closed his eyes, and collapsed.
"Dad."
"Quentin."
"Uncle Quentin."
Screams filled the air.
On the way to the hospital in the ambulance, Hannah and Lisa were with Quentin. Hannah squatted beside him, holding his hand tight.
Lisa's face was soaked with tears.
She glared at Hannah, full of resentment. She was mad at the daughter who made Quentin pass out.
Lisa snapped, "If we knew this would happen, we wouldn't have come to see you! Your dad and I worry about you every day, scared you're struggling here. We just want you to find a good guy to marry, someone to take care of you. But we never thought you'd get more stubborn as you grew up."
Hannah knew she messed up and didn't want to argue.
But Lisa's words kept echoing in her head, and she couldn't hold back, "I don't think a woman's life should be controlled by a man."
Lisa, fuming, sat up straight, "You still don't get it, do you?"
Hannah felt wronged and said, "What did I do wrong? We women have hands and feet; why can't we support ourselves? Why must we depend on men? I know you and Dad like Austin and are grateful for his help back then! But you can't use my marriage to repay him!"
If she hadn't met Charles, it wouldn't matter who she married.
Now that she had met Charles, she knew what love was.
In love, she didn't want to settle.
Lisa was so mad her chest hurt. She clutched her left side, face pale.
Hannah noticed something was wrong and jumped up, "Mom, what's wrong?"
Lisa angrily pushed her hand away, "Don't touch me! You've grown up, got your own opinions, and now you're talking back to us! You've already made your dad collapse, and now you want to do the same to me, just to make yourself happy."
Hannah quickly said, "Mom, that's not what I meant!"
Lisa scooted away, putting distance between them, "Then what do you mean?"
Hannah stayed quiet.
She had said everything she could, but they just wouldn't listen. Hannah didn't know how to get through to them.
Their beliefs were set in stone. They were convinced she should be with Austin.
If she didn't give in, they wouldn't forgive her.
Seeing Hannah's silence, Lisa got even more pissed, "Fine, you're all grown up now. Got your own ideas, and we can't control you anymore! Be with whoever you want; I'll just pretend I never had you as a daughter."
Hannah was both anxious and angry.
She was anxious about their misunderstanding of her.
She was angry also because of their misunderstanding.
Why did they think she was being immature and impulsive in breaking up with Austin?
Why couldn't they understand her?
As parents, shouldn't they support their children?
Seeing her silence, Lisa decided to play the guilt card, "You're still young and don't get it! Love alone can't put food on the table. Your dad and I have been around longer, we know people better. Austin's a good guy. If you marry him, you'll be happy. Trust me, don't break up with him. He really likes you. A woman needs a man who loves her more than she loves him to be happy. You're too soft-hearted and naive, easily fooled. We just don't want you to get hurt."
Hannah knew it was pointless to argue. No matter what she said or did, they thought she was young and clueless. She didn't want to make her mom collapse too, so she chose to protest in silence.
Lisa, used to seeing her as an obedient daughter, had never seen her so stubborn. She knew Hannah's silence wasn't a compromise but a silent protest, making her chest hurt even more.
Lisa sighed, "Fine, since you won't listen to anything I say, I won't say anything. Do whatever you want; I can't control you anymore."
With that, she turned her head away, ignoring Hannah.
They sat on the same row of chairs, not speaking, not looking at each other.
Lisa's mind was a mess. She didn't know what to do next.
Quentin was lying there. Hannah was being stubborn, and Oliver was waiting for her at home.
Quentin was taken to the emergency room.
Austin showed up a few minutes later.
Quentin's condition was way worse than they thought.
The doctor said, "Because the patient had a liver transplant a few years ago, his physical condition was already weaker than normal. We also found new issues with the patient."
Listening to the doctor, Hannah's mind went blank.
Hannah asked urgently, "What issues? What's wrong with my dad?"
The doctor said, "Acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery blockage, leading to insufficient blood supply and myocardial ischemia and necrosis."
Hearing the doctor's words, Hannah felt dizzy and almost fainted, "How could this happen? My dad's condition was stable after the liver transplant. How could he suddenly have a heart attack? There were no symptoms beforehand!"
The doctor said, "This condition has another trigger. He has persistent chest pain or discomfort lasting more than 30 minutes."
Even though the doctor used medical terms, everyone got the gist.
Hannah's face turned pale, overwhelmed with guilt.
Quentin was in this condition because of her.
As she was consumed by guilt, Lisa suddenly grabbed her shoulder and slapped her hard across the face, "Are you happy now? Look at what you've done to your father! You ungrateful brat."
