Chapter 779 Jealousy
Charles had been thinking about Violet all day, so he rushed over as soon as school ended.
Walking down the corridor, he heard her crying.
He frowned and called out, "Violet."
She stopped crying immediately, turned around, and ran to hug his leg, "Charles, you finally came!"
Then she remembered his broken promise and pouted, "You said you'd come right after class, but you lied!"
Charles softened, "I tried, but the gate between the elementary school and kindergarten was locked. I couldn't get through!"
In the mornings and afternoons, the schools were connected, but the gates were locked once classes started. He hadn't known that, so he promised Violet he'd come after class. When he tried, the gate was locked.
He'd been worried she'd be upset, so he ran over as soon as school ended.
Violet, still teary-eyed, asked, "Really? You didn't lie?"
Charles vowed, "I didn't. I'd never lie to you."
Violet brightened up, "I believe you. You'd never lie to me!"
Charles ruffled her hair, "Never. It's getting late. Let's go home."
Violet nodded and took his hand.
They ignored Austin, who had been with Violet the whole time. He followed them, his eyes lingering on their clasped hands, hiding his feelings.
At the kindergarten gate, they saw Fannie watching them with a smirk.
"Since Violet came, you've forgotten your other siblings! Maria and Declan have been in school for ages, and you've never picked them up! Aren't you afraid they'll get jealous?"
Violet felt happy and rubbed her cheek against Charles's hand.
Charles shot her a warning look, "If you don't stir things up, they won't."
Fannie pouted, "Is that really how you see me?"
"Yes," Charles replied instantly.
Fannie clutched her chest dramatically, "I'm heartbroken. I'm telling Dad and Mom."
"Stop it!" Patricia, not wanting to indulge her, took Violet's hand and walked out.
Two SUVs were parked at the gate. One belonged to the Langley family, with Martin, Patricia, Maria, and Declan waiting for Charles and Fannie. The other belonged to the Moore family.
Carter and Lassie stood by the car, peering into the school. When they saw the kids coming out, they rushed over with smiles, bombarding them with questions.
"How was your first day?"
"Did you like the food?"
"Any troublemakers?"
"Did you cause any trouble?"
"How did you get along with your classmates?"
Violet, focused on Charles, ignored Carter's questions.
Austin, however, answered calmly, "Violet did great! The food was good. She had two big bowls. No troublemakers, and she didn't cause any trouble for the teacher."
Carter was impressed, "And you? How was your day?"
Austin simply replied, "It was good."
Carter smiled and ruffled his hair. "Alright, let's get in the car and go home! It's cold out here."
Austin nodded and walked over to Violet, taking her hand. "Let's go home!"
Violet pulled her hand back, pouting. "I'm not going! I want to go home with Charles! I want to go to Martin's house."
Austin looked displeased.
Carter, feeling jealous, said, "You always want to go to Martin's! Come home with me first."
But Violet clung to Charles, refusing to let go, "I don't want to!"
Carter's face turned green with anger, "You're only three. Can't you stick to your parents? You're always clinging to Charles. Aren't you ashamed?"
Violet didn't care, ignoring him completely.
Carter was fuming, feeling a tightness in his chest. He thought having a daughter would be heartwarming, but it felt like he had gained an adversary. Thankfully, there was still Austin. Otherwise, he would have felt completely defeated.
Seeing his frustration, Lassie hid her laughter.
Patricia, who had been watching from the car, got out, "Let Violet come home with us. We have everything she needs, and I'll bring her to kindergarten tomorrow."
Carter, still red-faced, asked Violet, "Are you really not coming home with me?"
Violet nodded firmly, "I want to go to Martin's house."
Carter, grinding his teeth, glared at Violet, then took Austin's hand and got into the car without looking back.
Before leaving, Lassie said to Charles, "Take care of Violet! If she misbehaves, call me, and I'll come get her."
Charles nodded, "I will."
Violet promised earnestly, "I'll be good and won't cause any trouble for Martin and Patricia."
From the car, Carter's resentful voice called out, "Let's go already! She only cares about Charles, not us! Why are we still here? It's pointless!"
Lassie, amused by his childish behavior, laughed and, after a few more words of advice, got into the car and left.
