Chapter 917 Negotiation
Hannah found it both hilarious and super annoying.
She was about to explain, but Quentin jumped in first, "Look at his complexion, he looks like he's on death's door. Who knows how long he's got left? And you dumped Austin for this guy? Hannah, have you lost your mind? Or have I spoiled you so much that you're just doing whatever you want now?"
Every word he said felt like a punch to Charles' gut.
Hannah didn't want him to keep hurting Charles, so she called out, "Dad, please stop."
Quentin kept going, "Why should I stop? I'm doing this for your own good! You're just being ungrateful."
Hannah sighed, "He's the one I told you about, Charles. He woke up, but because of the car accident and the long coma, his legs are messed up. He's already doing rehab and will get better eventually. Please stop saying those things; it's really rude."
"Charles?" Quentin frowned hard.
When he deleted the contact info that day, it did seem to be this name.
'So he woke up? Wasn't the chance of a coma patient waking up supposed to be super low? How did he wake up so fast?' Quentin wondered.
"Hey there! I'm Charles Watson. Nice to meet you. Here's my card!" Charles pulled out a slick black and gold business card from his jacket and handed it over.
Quentin didn't even want to take it, leaving Charles' hand hanging, "So what if he woke up? Even if he were perfectly healthy, I wouldn't agree to you two being together! Austin has saved our family multiple times. Besides him, I won't accept anyone as my daughter's husband."
Charles knew he was being dissed on purpose.
From the moment he decided to come, he expected this, so he wasn't mad. Instead, he just placed the card on the table.
No matter how they treated him, as long as he did his part, it was enough.
Lisa chimed in, "Your dad's right. We only see Austin as your husband. Besides him, we won't accept anyone! If you still want to be part of this family, break up with him! I was wondering why you suddenly bailed when you were supposed to get married. Turns out he woke up! Hannah, we can't be so heartless. We must repay kindness! Leaving Austin at City Hall like that, do you think that's okay?"
Hannah looked down, feeling guilty, "I'll explain everything to him."
At that time, she was really scared and ran off without thinking.
Lisa scolded, "What's the use of just explaining! You've hurt him over and over, and he's been so good to you. How could you do such a thing?"
Stella had been listening for a while and couldn't take it anymore.
After holding back for so long, she finally snapped.
Stella said, "Hannah is a person. She has feelings, thoughts, and emotions! Why do you have to force your ideas on her? She's not a puppet for you to control! Yes, Austin has done a lot for you, and you should thank him properly. But thanking him doesn't mean sacrificing your lifelong happiness. Marrying a guy you don't love, will that make you happy? Your gratitude is to exchange your daughter's lifetime happiness. You are the most selfish parents I've ever seen. You are really infuriating! If it weren't for the fact that you're Hannah's parents, I would have cursed you out long ago!"
Stella was really pissed off.
Quentin's face turned red with anger, "What do you know? We're doing this for her own good! You don't understand our family's situation, so stay out of it."
Stella shot back, "What do I not know? I know everything! You keep saying it's for her own good? That's just what you think is good! Have you ever asked her what she needs? And what's wrong with Charles? How is he any worse than Austin? All of you are dictating to Hannah, hoping she'll follow your plans! You, Austin, all of you! No one has ever respected her thoughts, never asked her what she wants or doesn't want. Living life, only she knows if it's good or not, you don't need to worry."
Her words were sharp and direct. Hannah was afraid she would anger Quentin to the point of illness, so she pulled her to her side and whispered a warning, "Stop talking!"
If she continued, Quentin's heart condition might flare up again.
Stella kept patting her chest to calm herself down, "This is really infuriating. I've never been this angry in my life. I've never seen such selfish people. Clearly doing it for themselves, yet speaking so righteously as if they're thinking of others."
She was not like Hannah, afraid of this and that.
She said whatever was on her mind, venting all the words that had been stuck in her heart.
After all, they raised Hannah, not her.
Quentin, at his age, had never been scolded like this by a junior, and he was so angry that he couldn't catch his breath, his face turning red, and his hands tightly pressing on his chest.
He wanted to scold her for being ill-mannered, wondering if her parents had taught her to respect elders.
But in his anger and frustration, all the words got stuck in his throat, making him feel even worse.
Hannah was frightened by his appearance and immediately ran over, afraid he would fall. She anxiously tried to support him, but he pushed her away.
Quentin said, "I'll pretend I never had you as a daughter. Get out."
"Dad." Hannah's eyes welled up with tears.
Lisa supported Quentin and pushed her further away, "I think you brought these people here on purpose to anger your father. You know his health is poor, yet you still anger him. Get out of this house immediately. We'll pretend we never had you as a daughter."
"Mom." Hannah's tears hung at the corners of her eyes, stubbornly refusing to fall.
Seeing Hannah being pushed away again and again, Charles' heart ached, and his brows furrowed slightly.
He extended his arm, pulling Hannah in front of him, and gently patted her hand to comfort her. He looked at Quentin and said in a deep voice, "I don't know what you're dissatisfied with about me. I believe I can make Hannah the happiest woman in the world."
Lisa didn't hide her disdain and said contemptuously, "You think so? Stop bragging. Tell me, what can you offer Hannah? Do you have what Austin can give her?"
She was referring to money and capability.
At least, so far, Austin was the best she had seen in terms of overall conditions. This man named Charles only had a handsome face. What's the use of a good looking?
Charles didn't understand what she was referring to and asked with a frown, "Which aspect are you talking about? If you don't say it, how do you know I don't have it?"
He didn't understand Lisa, so he didn't know what she was referring to.
But Hannah understood her.
She knew Lisa was talking about money, connections, and personal ability.
Lisa was a vain person. If she knew Charles was the CEO of IntelliMerge Technologies Company, she would definitely keep asking Charles for benefits.
No way. She couldn't let Lisa know. She couldn't let Lisa take advantage of Charles.
Everything Charles had now was earned through his own hard work. Why should Lisa get to squander his hard-earned money?
