Chapter 786 Possessiveness and Control
Carter, worried about Violet being heartbroken, floored it and got to the airport in forty minutes.
As soon as they parked, Violet bolted out of the car.
Carter, not even bothering to park properly, jumped out and chased after her.
Violet ran around aimlessly.
Carter grabbed her hand, "Violet, the entrance is on the left! That's the exit. Didn't you come here last week?"
"Okay!" Violet, flustered, turned left.
But they were too late.
When they arrived, they only saw Patricia, Fannie, and Maria with Declan, waving from the security checkpoint.
Violet ran over, panicked, "Where's Charles? Is he already inside?"
Patricia, surprised, asked, "Violet, how did you get here? Who brought you?"
Carter walked up and explained, "Violet insisted on finding Charles this morning and made me take her to Sunshine Manor. David said Charles was going abroad to study! So we rushed here. What's going on? Why is he suddenly going abroad? Why didn't we know?"
Patricia sighed, "We've been planning this for a while. Charles has already self-studied all the middle and high school content. Staying in school is a waste of time. We wanted to send him abroad in seventh grade, but he didn't want to leave Violet. Now he's fourteen, and we can't delay any longer."
Carter got it. Charles needed a bigger world. But Violet, who'd been close to Charles since childhood, wouldn't understand.
"Violet, Patricia's right. Charles is too smart to stay here. He'll be back before you know it."
But Violet couldn't hear it. She only knew Charles was leaving.
"No, I don't want Charles to leave. Daddy, get him back. I want Charles." Tears streamed down her face.
Carter's heart ached. He squatted down, wiping her tears.
"Sweetheart, don't cry. Charles is going to become even better and stronger! He'll give you more security in the future. When the holidays come, Daddy will take you to see him, okay?"
Violet kept shaking her head, "No, I want Charles. I want Charles."
Carter, heartbroken, held her. "Violet, be good. Listen to me. Stop crying. You're breaking my heart."
Violet, in her sorrow, pounded on Carter's back.
"I want Charles. I want Charles."
Patricia, feeling sympathetic, rubbed her head, "Violet, I know you're sad, but Charles needs to learn more to protect you! He said once he finishes his studies, he'll come to find you first."
Violet kept crying. She didn't understand the bigger picture. She only knew Charles was leaving, and she was very sad.
Carter said to Patricia, "She'll be fine after a couple of days. I'll take her back and try to console her. Tell Charles to call her once he's settled."
Patricia nodded, "Yes! Take good care of Violet!"
Carter picked up Violet, ignoring her cries, and took her away.
Fannie and Maria, eyes red, watched where Martin and Charles had left, tears blurring their vision. They didn't cry out loud, knowing Charles leaving was the right decision and they should support it.
Violet cried until she was exhausted and fell asleep.
When she woke up, the first thing she did was call Charles. His phone was off.
Unwilling to give up, she kept calling over and over, losing count.
After countless attempts, she finally got through.
Charles's familiar voice came through, "Violet."
Hearing his voice, Violet's face lit up.
"Charles! You finally answer. Do you know how many times I've called you?"
Charles, apologetic, said, "I'm sorry, my phone died earlier!"
Hearing his voice, Violet's anger faded. She just wanted to see him.
"Charles, when are you coming back? I miss you so much."
Charles said, "Violet, be good! I'll finish my studies as soon as possible and come back! Trust me, I'll be back before you go to college. I'll come back for your coming-of-age celebration."
Violet's face fell, "That's ten years away!"
Charles laughed, "It is a long time, but I'll try to come back sooner! You must look at the notes I made for you and get into a good college. Understand?"
Thinking about not seeing Charles for ten years, Violet wanted to cry. But to avoid worrying him, she said, "I will! I'll get into a good college. You must come back as soon as possible."
"Okay!" Charles felt relieved.
They chatted a bit more, but Charles had to unpack and report to school, so they had to hang up.
After the call, Violet felt much better. She held her phone, smiling.
Just then, the door opened.
Austin walked in with a bowl of soup. Seeing her smiling, he asked, "Are you awake? I brought you some soup. Come have some."
"Okay!" Violet agreed, put down her phone, and sipped the soup elegantly.
Austin looked surprised, "You're in a good mood?"
Wasn't she just crying over Charles leaving?
Violet nodded, "Yes! I just talked to Charles. I've figured it out. Since he can't come back, I can visit him during the holidays."
Austin clenched his fists. The only thing that made Violet happy was Charles.
He used to not understand why he felt unhappy. Now he did. It was possessiveness.
Violet was his sister and should only belong to him. No one else could take her away, not even Charles.
No one knew how much self-control it took for him to suppress the urge to keep Violet by his side.
Young Austin thought this was just a brother's love for his sister. He considered Violet his only one, and she should consider him her only one too.
As he grew older, this feeling became stronger. He had an urgent desire to possess Violet.
