Chapter 592 Martha and Her Son Fall Into Martin's Trap
"Martin observed her entrance, not pressing for further details. He was acutely aware of his own circumstances. His life had been hanging by a thread since the first doctor had declared his impending demise. He couldn't accept it. He sought out numerous doctors, and Carter had done the same on his behalf.
He had exhausted every possible avenue.
He had swallowed every prescribed pill.
Yet, every medical professional echoed the same grim prognosis: his organs were extensively damaged, and even the most potent medicine could only prolong his life for a month at the most.
His journey from hope to despair was a tumultuous one.
Thus, when Patricia proposed seeking Frank Taylor's advice on the best doctors, he didn't harbor much hope.
The higher the hope, the deeper the disappointment.
Unbeknownst to him, his indifference was suffocating Patricia.
""Frank mentioned that Dr. Tate can cure your illness! I will seek out Dr. Tate and plead with him to heal you,"" she declared.
While engaging with Maria and Declan, Martin chimed in, ""And where might Dr. Tate be?""
Patricia settled beside him. ""No matter where he is, even if he's hiding underground, I will find a way to reach him.""
Her determination amused Martin. ""I'll have Alan dispatch someone later to track him down. If he exists, we will undoubtedly find him.""
""Agreed!""
Patricia nodded, gripping his hand tightly. ""Promise me that you won't surrender, no matter what. If cancer can be cured, your condition certainly can.""
Martin tenderly stroked her face, his eyes brimming with profound reluctance. ""Alright! I won't give up, for you and the children.""
After Patricia spent some time with Martin, Maria and Declan began to show signs of fatigue.
Despite being a hospital, Martin didn't want them to linger there for too long. He requested Patricia and the housekeeper to escort the children home.
Once the children and the housekeeper were safely home, Patricia returned to the hospital.
She informed Alan about Dr. Tate.
A spark of hope ignited in Alan's eyes. He promptly instructed his men to locate Dr. Tate.
There were numerous matters demanding attention at the company.
Patricia quickly immersed herself in the flurry of work.
However, she didn't forget to remind the housekeeper to deliver lunch to Martin.
And so, a tranquil day passed.
Meanwhile, at the Langley residence.
Martha had just concluded her call with Dorian when she noticed Martin with the car keys, poised to leave.
She promptly intercepted him.
""What are you up to?"" she inquired.
Martin retorted impatiently, ""What else could I possibly be doing?""
Martha approached him and seized his arm. ""Are you off to gamble again?""
Martin scoffed, ""What else? You assured me that I could take over Martin's company. But what transpired? A woman ousted me! Do you comprehend the mockery I endure behind my back? They jeer that I rely on my mom for everything, that I overestimate my abilities, that I'm incompetent and was bested by a woman.""
Martha's expression hardened instantly.
""Who dares to belittle you in such a manner?""
Martin retorted disdainfully, ""What? Do you plan to defend me? Spare me! They'll ridicule me even more! I implore you, refrain from making uncertain promises. You've already tarnished my reputation.""
Martha hastily interjected, ""This time, it's certain, absolutely certain! I've procured evidence.""
Noticing his skepticism, she swiftly retrieved her phone and presented it to him.
""Observe, these are the photographs I had someone capture of Patricia. She's actually involved with James! She's a woman, and inevitably, she'll marry! Even if your grandparents favor her, why would they relinquish Martin's company to her?""
Martin accepted her phone.
Indeed.
Beneath the dim streetlight, Patricia was locked in an embrace with a man.
Even though the shroud of night had fallen and the image was somewhat obscured, their faces were still discernible.
The man in question was none other than James.
Yes, the very same James who had assisted Patricia in evicting them from the meeting room that fateful day at the office. His long hair and face mask made him unmistakable.
This revelation was nothing short of sensational!
Patricia's ascension to the presidency was only made possible due to her marriage to Martin.
However, with Martin's recent demise, she was already seemingly ensnared in a dalliance with James.
Should this scandalous affair become public knowledge, it would not only incite the ire of the Langley Group shareholders, but even the two elderly benefactors would undoubtedly withdraw their support for Patricia.
All he needed to do was seize this golden opportunity, and Patricia's downfall would be inevitable. The presidency would then be his for the taking.
Suddenly, a wave of doubt washed over him. Martin paused, deep in thought, before hurriedly voicing his concern, ""Even if we manage to bring Patricia down, Dorian would surely advocate for his son to succeed! His son, a management graduate, would undoubtedly be a formidable opponent. How could I possibly compete with him?""
Martha, with a sly squint in her eyes, sneered, ""Don't fret, I've already unearthed a secret weapon against his son. He wouldn't dare to challenge you.""
Unable to contain his curiosity, Martin pressed, ""What leverage do you have over him?""
With a cryptic smile, Martha responded, ""All in due time! For now, do you trust me? I promised you the CEO position, and I fully intend to deliver.""
Martin nodded fervently, ""I believe you! What's our next move?""
Martha's smile widened into a cunning grin.
An hour later, news broke that Patricia, seemingly discontent with her widowed life, had made advances on her assistant. The news quickly became the talk of the town, with the article even featuring a photograph of Patricia initiating a kiss with James.
In no time, various media outlets had picked up the story.
The revelation ignited a fiery debate online.
Martha, ever the strategist, funded a smear campaign, ensuring that the comments were overwhelmingly critical of Patricia.
A comment from a user read: [It's shocking how quickly she's moved on after her husband's death.]
Another user chimed in: [She inherited a fortune from her husband, and now she's using that wealth to lure in a lover! When will I ever lead such a life?]
A reply from another user read: [If you desire such a life, you'll first need to find a wealthy, elderly husband on his deathbed.]
Another comment said: [It's not that she can't find someone; her husband's death doesn't mean she can't date. But this is too soon! And from the photo, it's clear she was the instigator!]"
