Chapter 777: Unfathomable
Colton stormed in with bodyguards, yanking Harper and Lily off the ground.
Carter glared, "Stay away from Lassie. Keep a ten-feet distance if you see her. No exceptions."
Harper pleaded, "Carter, can't you see how much I care for you? I really like you."
Carter scoffed, "Your affection makes me sick. Don't ever bring it up again."
He turned away, ignoring her.
"Carter," Harper called out again, desperate for his attention.
She had fallen for him the moment she saw him at the wedding. She believed she should have been his wife, not Lassie.
Why did Lassie get to take her place? Harper was the Bennett family's real daughter, yet Lassie had stolen twenty years of her life and the chance to marry Carter.
Carter was hers. She'd do anything to get him.
Harper and Lily were dragged away.
Carter went to Lassie, gently cupping her face, "I'm sorry you had to go through that. I failed to protect you again."
Lassie smiled and shook her head, "I'm fine. Luckily, Charles was here, or Violet would have been in danger."
Patricia gave Charles a thumbs up, "Nice job, Charles! Proud of you."
Charles rolled his eyes and sat down, playing with Violet.
Patricia looked around and asked, "Where's the servant? Why isn't she here?"
Lassie replied, "I sent her home to get Violet and Austin's formula."
In that short time, Harper and Lily had shown up and almost hurt Violet.
Carter tucked a stray lock of hair behind Lassie's ear, "Tidy you up. It's almost time to take the kids out."
"Okay," Lassie nodded and sat at the dressing table to tidy up.
Daisy walked to the cradle, looking at the sleeping Austin, and frowned, "Is this the child you said looked familiar?"
Ryan, who was close to Carter, had seen the baby when she was born. They knew Lassie had only given birth to a daughter. They'd heard about the son from Patricia.
Patricia nodded, "Yeah, he looked familiar at first, but not anymore."
Daisy stared at Austin, "It's probably your imagination. He doesn't look familiar to me. Kids' features change a lot. You're overthinking."
Patricia sighed, "I must be mistaken. He's just a baby. How could he look familiar?"
Daisy shook her head, clicking her tongue, "This kid is gorgeous! Look at that straight nose and those red lips. He’s gonna be handsome."
Patricia agreed, "He really is. If he were my son, I’d never abandon him. No matter how tough things got, I’d raise him."
Daisy couldn't resist pinching Austin's cheek.
Austin, who had been sleeping, suddenly opened his eyes and stared at Daisy with his dark eyes.
Daisy shivered, "His gaze is so intense. He's only two months old, but it feels like he's much older. I got goosebumps."
Patricia laughed, covering her mouth, "You too? I feel the same, but he's just a baby. We must be overthinking."
Daisy and Austin locked eyes for a while, as if testing each other’s patience.
Eventually, Daisy gave in, "Alright, I give up! This kid is really unsettling."
He looked adorable while sleeping, but once he opened his eyes, he was quite unnerving.
Time was up.
After Lassie tidied up, she and Carter each carried a child to the venue outside.
The place was packed.
Violet sensed the noise and waved her hands and feet excitedly, laughing. But Austin frowned, clearly not enjoying the commotion.
After Harper and Lily were kicked out, Carter also sent Logan away.
With those troublemakers gone, the Baby Shower went smoothly.
Carter and Lassie, each holding a child, went around toasting at each table, eager to introduce their kids to everyone.
The Baby Shower ended successfully.
Time flew by, and soon Violet was one year old.
Everyone gathered around a large table, watching Violet and Austin participate in the birthday party.
After observing for a year or two, Carter noticed Violet didn’t seem very smart. She spent all day following Charles around, ignoring Carter.
Violet sat on the table, and then crawled towards Charles, who was standing nearby.
Carter and Patricia were puzzled.
Charles, worried she might fall, quickly caught her and held her firmly.
Though she was chubby and heavy for a one-year-old, he didn’t mind and didn’t want to let go.
In Charles's arms, Violet gave him a big kiss on the cheek, "Charles, Charles, Violet likes Charles."
Everyone laughed.
Ryan teased, "Carter, you’re losing your daughter. She only has eyes for Charles, ignoring you completely."
Carter glared at Charles, feeling jealous.
