Chapter 1033 Danger Period

The doctor shook his head.

"Too early to say! He suffered a severe head injury, and his recovery will depend on how well he heals."

Austin grabbed the doctor's hand and asked nervously, "What are the chances my father will get better?"

The doctor shook his head again.

"I can't give you any definite answers right now! Let's get him through the critical period in the ICU first. But you should prepare yourself for the worst."

That last sentence plunged Austin into an abyss.

"What do you mean by 'be prepared for the worst'?"

He gripped the doctor's hand tightly, his voice rising in panic.

"Are you saying my father won't wake up? Is that what you mean?"

The doctor winced in pain from Austin's grip.

"No, no, that's not what I mean! But the patient's condition is very serious right now. I'm just asking you to prepare for any outcome. I've treated countless patients who fell down stairs. Some recover well, while others don't! Each case is different! Your father's injuries are quite severe, and I can't make any promises at this moment."

Tears that had dried up in Austin's eyes began to flow again.

"No, you have to save him! No matter how much it costs! You must save him."

The doctor resisted the urge to pull his hand away.

"It's not about the money. The patient hit the back of his head, which is the area with the most brain nerves, and his injury is very severe! We can only say we'll do our best, but we can't guarantee anything 100%! I'm sorry."

With that, the doctor gently but firmly pulled his arm out of Austin's grip.

Hearing the doctor's words, Austin felt the world spinning. His body went limp, and he almost fainted. His tall frame swayed.

The doctor immediately supported him.

"Don't lose hope. There might be a miracle!"

Austin looked at the doctor in despair, a mocking smile on his lips.

A miracle.

Where in the world were there so many miracles?

All the so-called miracles doctors talk about were fake, just to comfort the family.

At that moment, Carter was wheeled out of the emergency room by medical staff.

Austin quickly walked over.

The medical staff didn't stop and directly wheeled Carter into the ICU.

Austin sat dumbfounded on the bench outside the ICU, staring blankly ahead. His mind was completely empty, unable to process any thoughts.

After an unknown amount of time, a nurse walked over and handed a phone to Austin.

"Are you a relative of Carter Moore?"

Austin looked up at the nurse, his eyes filled with confusion.

The nurse explained, "This was found on the ground by the medical staff when they were putting him in the ambulance! The phone has been ringing."

Austin took the phone in a daze.

The phone lit up at his touch.

A family photo of five appeared on the screen.

This was taken when Carter and Lassie were in Country D for Violet's treatment.

Carter had always used this family photo as his phone wallpaper.

In the photo, Carter and Lassie stood in the middle, with Violet next to Lassie, Austin next to Carter, and Shirley in the front center.

Carter's hand was affectionately on his shoulder, smiling happily.

Looking at the photo, Austin felt a moment of disorientation.

It was as if the photo was taken just yesterday.

He could still hear Carter and Lassie's laughter echoing in his ears.

Looking at Carter's smiling face in the photo, Austin couldn't hold back his tears and broke down, burying his face in his hands.

How could he push Dad down the stairs?

How could he do that?

He wanted to scream, to let out all the emotions in his heart.

But this was a hospital.

And it was the ICU entrance.

He couldn't scream, and he couldn't even cry out loud. He bit his lip hard, swallowing his sobs.

As he cried silently, Carter's phone rang again.

The call was from Lassie.

Austin looked at the name "Honey" flashing on the screen, his heart aching.

He let the phone ring, not daring to answer.

The phone rang twice and then stopped, not ringing again.

Austin clutched the phone tightly in his hand, sitting helplessly at the ICU entrance, not knowing what else to do but wait.

Perhaps because no one answered the calls, Lassie didn't call again.

The next day, at dawn, Lassie called again.

Austin knew that if he didn't answer, Lassie would definitely get suspicious.

Carter and Lassie had always been very close. If they lost contact for so long, Lassie would definitely sense something was wrong.

After the phone rang twice, Austin finally answered.

"Carter, why are you only answering now? Do you know how many times I've called you? Why didn't you call me back?"

Austin moved his lips and said, "Mom!"

"Austin? Why is it you? Where's your father?"

Austin deliberately lowered his voice, "Dad is still sleeping! It's just dawn here! It's still early! You didn't stay up all night waiting, did you?"

He tried to make his voice sound normal, without any hint of abnormality.

Judging by the time, Lassie had been calling since the afternoon.

At that time, it would have been early morning in Country Z.

"Yes, I couldn't rest easy without getting through to him! Why is he still sleeping? He usually wakes up early!"

Austin lied, "We don't get to see each other often, so we ended up having a few drinks."

Lassie didn't suspect anything and said, "I see! You haven't had a chance to sit and chat alone for a long time! Hangovers can cause headaches! Remember to drink some lemon water!"

"I know! I'll go back to sleep for a bit."

"Alright! Go get some rest! When your father wakes up, have him call me anytime! I'll be waiting."

"Okay."

Austin's eyes felt dry and sore. He blinked, trying to moisten them with tears, but found he couldn't cry anymore.

After ending the call, Austin stood up and walked to the large glass window at the ICU entrance.

Through the glass, he could see inside.

Carter's head was wrapped in thick bandages, and he was covered in tubes, lying motionless on the bed.

He grabbed the night nurse and asked, "Nurse, how is my father doing?"

The nurse rubbed her sleepy eyes, "There were no complications last night."

Austin immediately asked excitedly, "Does that mean my father is out of the critical period and is okay?"

The nurse shook her head, "Hard to say! We usually observe for three days. These three days are the most critical, and anything can happen. So a family member must stay here in case of any emergencies."

Austin instantly fell back into his chair.

Two more nights.

How would he get through these two nights?

If Carter didn't wake up soon, he wouldn't be able to keep it from Lassie.

Once Lassie found out, the Langley family and the Parker family would definitely know too.

What should he do?
