Chapter 26 An Unusual Dinner
Patricia returned to her room, feeling aggrieved, tears flowing like a newly opened spring.
Suddenly, her phone beeped with a WhatsApp message. It was from Charles.
‘Mommy, are you free? Fannie and I miss you so much, can we see you?’
Not wanting to worry them, Patricia lifted her head, took two deep breaths, and held back her tears. After making sure her face didn't show any sign, she went to the bathroom and started a video call to Charles.
He answered immediately. Charles and Fannie's heads squeezed into the small phone screen.
"Mommy, we miss you so much. Why didn't you come home today?"
After speaking, Charles noticed that Patricia's eyes were reddened and hurriedly asked, "Mommy, why are your eyes red? Did you cry? Did that jerk of a dad bully you?"
With his reminder, Fannie also noticed that Patricia's expression was off and pouted, "Mommy, how did that jerk of a dad bully you? Tell me and Charles, we'll help you get revenge."
Patricia shook her head, forcing out a smile, "Martin didn't bully me, I accidentally got some face cleanser in my eyes while washing my face just now."
Clearly not believing her words, Charles questioned with suspicion, "Really?"
Patricia nodded, trying not to let them continue questioning, put on a stern face asking them, "It's already late at night. Why haven't you two gone to bed yet? What did I tell you? Early to bed, early to rise, helps you stay healthy."
Charles replied, "I slept too much during the day and couldn't sleep. Mommy, tomorrow is the weekend, can you come back and be with me and Fannie? You promised to take us to the amusement park."
Unable to refuse them, Patricia hesitated for a moment and said, "Alright, I have to visit the Watson family tomorrow. The day after tomorrow, I'll take a day off and accompany you both."
Upon hearing this, the two kids' eyes instantly lit up. "Mommy, since you've promised, you can't go back on your word! Otherwise, we'll be mad."
Patricia smiled, "When has mommy ever gone back on her promises to you? Oh, Charles, the surveillance camera is broken. Can we watch the footage once it's fixed?"
Charles asked puzzledly, "Mommy, why are you asking about that?"
Patricia urged, "Don't question for now, just answer me!"
If they could watch the footage, they would know who added honey to the soup. Charles confidently smiled, "You asked the right person. Normally, in this situation, playback wouldn't be possible! But I am a computer genius!"
Patricia saw hope, "You mean you can?"
With a slight raise of his little head, there was a proud expression on Charles's face. "Of course! There's nothing in this world I can't do."
Patricia let out a sigh of relief, her mind slowly forming a plan. "Alright, it's getting late. You two should go to bed! As for the surveillance matter, we'll talk about it when we meet the day after tomorrow."
Charles made an 'OK' gesture towards her.
"Goodnight, Mommy!"
"Goodnight, Mommy!"
The call ended, and Charles's smiling little face instantly turned cold, his eyes filled with endless coldness, much like an angry Martin. Fannie pouted, feeling sorry for her mother.
"Mommy treats us like babies. Does she think we can't tell when we cry or have something in our eyes? It must be that jerk of a dad bullying Mommy, but Mommy doesn't want to worry us, so she doesn't tell us."
Charles furrowed his tiny brows tightly. "How dare someone bully my Mommy! I'll teach him a lesson."
Excitedly, Fannie asked, "Charles, do you have an idea?"
Charles smiled mysteriously, his eyes flickering mischievously.
Meanwhile, Patricia adjusted her emotions in the bathroom and, as she walked out, unexpectedly saw Martin sitting on the couch. The dim light enveloped him, making it hard to see his true expression.
"Who were you talking to just now?"
His voice was low and devoid of emotion.
"It's none of your business." Patricia didn't want to engage with him and glanced over him. "Since you're here accompanying him, I'll go rest in the next room."
As she watched her retreating figure, Martin's thin lips twitched, the apology stuck in his throat, unable to come out. He watched her leave helplessly.
Under Patricia's careful care, Randy's condition improved the next day. She woke up early and personally cooked breakfast for him.
"You just fell ill yesterday, so you need to be careful with your diet. I only made a simple salad and rice porridge to fill your stomach. When you're feeling better, I'll make something delicious for you."
Randy scooped a spoonful of porridge into his mouth and closed his eyes contentedly. With a satisfied expression, he said, "Mommy's cooking is amazing. Even the salad tastes like a Christmas feast."
Patricia chuckled helplessly. "You little flatterer!"
Randy took another bite of vegetables. "I'm not flattering, Mommy. I'm telling the truth. Daddy has hired many chefs for me, but none of them can cook as deliciously as you. I really love eating the food you make."
His praise made Patricia blush. The mother and son chatted happily. Just then, Martin came downstairs. Patricia's face instantly drooped, intentionally avoiding looking at him. Martin took a seat at the main spot, and Barbara promptly served warm sandwiches and hot milk.
Martin glanced at the simple dishes in front of Randy. They were just two simple dishes, but they somehow whetted his appetite. After taking a sip of milk, he instinctively reached for a fork to taste, but was interrupted by Patricia.
"Mr. Langley, I'm sorry, but I only made enough for Randy. If he eats it all, there won't be any left for you."
Martin couldn't stand losing face and gritted his teeth, saying, "He won't finish it all, I'll help him."
Unexpectedly, as soon as he finished speaking, Randy immediately hugged the plate of food protectively, staring at Martin with caution. "Who said I won't finish it? Mommy's cooking is delicious, and I can eat it all. Daddy, don't take it away from me."
Martin's face instantly turned dark. He clenched his teeth, withdrew his hand, and took a bite of his sandwich. The food he usually enjoyed had no taste at this moment, as if he were chewing on wax.
After breakfast, Martin drove Patricia and Randy to the hospital. Throughout the entire journey, Patricia didn't say a word to Martin. She didn't even spare him a glance. A raging, nameless anger churned in Martin's chest, yet he had no outlet to vent it.
Midday approached in the blink of an eye. Patricia saw that it was almost time and prepared to leave Randy with Martin.
"I need to go home for a bit. Take good care of Randy and contact me if anything comes up."
Upon hearing this, Randy immediately grabbed Patricia's hand. "No, I don't want Mommy to leave."
Patricia smiled gently and reassured him, "Mommy needs to visit the Watson family. Don't worry, as soon as I finish everything, I'll come back right away. I won't leave you behind."
Without hesitation, Randy said, "I want to go with you."
"Hmm? Go together?"
Randy vigorously nodded his little head. "Yes, I want to go with Mommy. It's been a long time since I've seen Grandpa Gavin, so it's convenient to go with Mommy and visit him."
Patricia couldn't bear to refuse him, but she was also concerned about his health and had to be firm. "No, you're not feeling well and need to stay at the hospital to rest."
Randy clung to her hand, acting spoiled. "Mommy, please let me go with you! I really want to go with you. Mommy, Mommy..."
With every ‘mommy’ he uttered; Patricia was on the verge of surrender. Luckily, just before completely giving in, her reason triumphed over her emotions.
"No, it's for your own good!" Seeing that his persuasion wasn't successful, Randy turned to Martin for help.
"Daddy, please take me! It's been a long time since you've taken me out. I really want to see Grandpa. Let me go meet him!" Under his persistent pleas, Martin's heart softened.
"Let him go! Opportunities like this should be given for children and the elderly to bond. I'll take good care of him when we go together."
Patricia, really didn't want to bring Randy, to the complex situation at the Watson family. She had an appointment to meet Gavin today, and it was definitely not a simple matter. She didn't want to involve Randy in it. However, she couldn't bear to refuse him either.
After a struggle in her heart, she finally agreed to his request. Martin drove them to the Watson family. Due to Randy needing to hang a drip, they were half an hour late compared to the originally agreed upon time of eleven o'clock.
Martin parked the car, and Patricia led Randy into the house. As soon as they entered, Debbie's ironic voice sounded, "Dad, I told you earlier that she didn't take your words seriously at all. She even said she would be here at exactly eleven o'clock, but what happened? She's half an hour late."
Gavin's face turned dark, and he was about to get angry. However, when he saw Randy next to Patricia, he paused for a moment before a greater anger welled up inside him. "What? Afraid that I'll bully you? Bringing a child along to support you?"
