Chapter 37 Exchanging Identities for Two Babies
Charles broke out in a cold sweat down his back. He accelerated his pace, managing to erase Patricia, Randy, and Fannie from the video just seconds before the surveillance was retrieved, as if they had never been in the amusement park.
Mission accomplished, Charles breathed a sigh of relief and felt his strength drain from his body, collapsing on the ground.
It was really too close just now. They were just a hair's breadth away from disaster.
At the same time, across the hall...
Martin and Ryan received the surveillance footage sent by Alan.
He rushed to the computer and fast-forwarded the video to the spot near the jumping platform.
However, after watching it countless times, he couldn't find Patricia and the two children in the crowd, even though the time and location were correct.
"How is this possible?" Ryan couldn't believe his eyes and rubbed them vigorously.
Martin's pupils contracted, his gaze turned cold, and there was a hint of a sinister smile on his lips as he looked at him.
Carter, exhausted, pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling defeated by his own intelligence.
Ryan pointed at the computer and confidently declared,
"I'm sure the surveillance footage has been tampered with! I didn't make a mistake; I really saw Patricia. She was holding a little boy who looked exactly like Randy."
Martin and Carter stared at him as if he were a fool.
Feeling frustrated, Ryan took out his phone and dialed Alan's number.
"Let me ask you, was there any tampering with the surveillance footage before you left? Go find Luke and have the footage checked. It has definitely been tampered with."
"Well..." Alan hesitated, as it wasn't a direct order from Martin.
Angry, Ryan shouted, "What 'well'? Martin is right next to me, and my words are his orders! Hurry up and go. Martin and I will wait for your message."
With no other choice, Alan agreed.
Ryan slammed his phone on the table, stood with his hands on his hips, and said confidently,
"You wait and see. The surveillance footage has definitely been tampered with. I couldn't have been mistaken."
Martin glanced at his phone and raised an eyebrow. "Did you change your phone?"
Ryan froze, and his facial expression gradually cracked.
Carter struggled not to laugh but couldn't help it. Remembering Ryan's earlier bear-like appearance, he stifled his laughter, causing his handsome face to twitch, until finally, he burst into quiet laughter.
With a bitter face, Ryan said,
"It's all because of you! After seeing Patricia, I wanted to call you immediately, but my phone fell off the jumping platform. It was a new phone that I had just replaced."
Martin remained silent and looked at Carter, raising an eyebrow.
After fighting it for a while, Carter, who was always elegant and gentlemanly, laughed uproariously, with tears even streaming down his face.
He wiped away a tear and said to the pitiful-looking Ryan, "I, I really didn't mean to make fun of you. I just couldn't help it!"
Then, without any consideration for Ryan's face, he shared the embarrassing incident with Martin.
"Martin, you won't believe it. When Ryan was playing on the jumping platform, he got so scared that he fainted, among all those people, including teenage girls. Everyone was fine, but he was the only one who fainted and had to be carried away on a stretcher. I didn't expect him to be that timid and get scared to the point of fainting..."
"…??" Images of the scene involuntarily flashed through Martin's mind, his ice-cold face twitching and convulsing.
Ryan felt completely humiliated and wished he could find a hole to hide in.
He was completely finished, and this would be a black mark on his record that he could never wash away in his lifetime.
Just as he felt utterly ashamed, Alan's call came in.
He answered the call like he had just seen a savior, and to prove his innocence, he deliberately turned on the speakerphone.
"How is it? Did you find anything suspicious?" Ryan hurriedly asked.
Alan respectfully replied, "Luke checked the video and confirmed that nothing was tampered with, nothing suspicious at all."
"Fuck!" Ryan cursed. Just a moment ago, Ryan was full of confidence and assurance, but now he was filled with self-doubt.
Could it be that he really saw it wrong? But he was certain that he saw it very clearly! Ryan began to question himself.
"It must be an error in his technique. I'll check it again..." Ryan defended.
Exhausted by his relentless doubt, Martin finally couldn't take it anymore and interrupted, "Enough, the farce ends here. Let's not bring this up again."
After saying that, he decisively hung up the call.
As Ryan was being dragged away by Carter, he was still trapped in self-doubt.
Charles, who had been secretly observing them the whole time, finally breathed a sigh of relief and reported to Patricia that everything was fine.
That evening, Patricia took Randy back to the Ellenstein Villa District.
To prevent Randy from accidentally revealing anything, Patricia deliberately said, "Randy, how about we make a bet?"
Curiously, Randy asked, "What are we betting on?"
Patricia smiled and said, "No matter who asks you, just say that when you were playing with Jade today, Daddy brought you home and Mommy came back alone in the evening."
Randy blinked his big eyes somewhat confused and asked, "Why do we need to bet on that?"
Winking mischievously, Patricia replied, "This is a secret between Mommy and Randy. Mommy doesn't want to share it with anyone else. Mommy wants to see if Randy can keep a secret."
Randy didn't suspect anything and readily agreed, "I can keep a secret with Mommy."
Patricia stuck out her pinky towards him and said, "Then we have a dealdow.whoever tells the secret is in big trouble."
Without hesitation, Randy hooked his pinky with hers and said, "Mommy, please rest assured. I won't tell anyone about what we did at the amusement park today. I am very good at keeping secrets."
Knowing that Randy was a child who always kept his word, Patricia was certain that he would keep his promise.
Fannie watched Randy cautiously, her eyes red and filled with reluctance.
"Randy, I don't want to say goodbye to you! When can we play together again?" Fannie asked almost sobbing at the impending separation.
After a day of bonding, Randy and Fannie had formed a deep friendship. Despite being younger than him, Fannie took care of him, looked after him, and even showed concern for him like an older sister.
Randy really liked her. Randy held Fannie's hand tightly and looked at Patricia,
"Mommy, can I play with Fannie often in the future? She is my first friend." Randy said sincerely.
Seeing their strong sibling bond, Patricia felt somewhat relieved and with teary eyes, she replied, "Of course! You can play with Fannie whenever you want. She is your first friend."
"Afterwards, I can bring her to see you often," Patricia promised.
"Thank you, mommy!" Randy immediately smiled and excitedly looked at Fannie. "Fannie, if you miss me, you can call me anytime, and my mommy will bring me to find you."
"Okay!" Fannie nodded happily.
At Ellenstein Villa District...While Martin was taking a shower, Charles quietly put on his pajamas, he packed a set of clothes, with a hat and a mask. Before he quietly sneaked out of the door.
Once out of the surveillance range of Ellenstein Villa District's gate, he found a secluded place, changed into his clothes, and put on the hat and mask to hide his face comfortably.
When everything was ready, he packed his pajamas back into the bag, hung it on a tree branch, took a photo, and sent it to Patricia. Then, he lowered his head and walked along the road.
After Patricia and Jade separated, Patricia walked along the path until she arrived at the tree branch with Randy and took out the pajamas inside the bag for Randy to change into.
Randy, puzzled by seeing the pajamas, asked, "Mommy, why do I have to change my pajamas?"
Patricia gently explained, "Remember what mommy told you earlier? You have to pretend that you're going out from home! Later, if daddy asks, you can say that you're going out to pick up mommy."
Randy nodded, not fully understanding.
Even though he didn't know why mommy wanted to do this, he firmly believed in her words and obediently followed her instructions.
Just as he finished changing into his pajamas, Martin's ghost-like voice suddenly sounded from behind, "What are you guys doing?"
Patricia's breath hitched, and she was so frightened that her hand trembled, almost causing the clothes in the bag to fall out.
