Chapter 185 Debbie Is Simply an Incompetent Doctor

As the fruit knife flew towards Patricia, her thoughts froze for a split second, and she forgot to dodge. In that critical moment, Hunter, from out of nowhere, charged over and tightly wrapped his arms around Patricia, shielding her from the knife.

The blade of the fruit knife struck solidly against Hunter’s back, and blood immediately seeped through his clothes, quickly staining his entire back red. The thick scent of blood enveloped the air.

"Ah..." Seeing the blood, the man was petrified, and the knife dropped from his loosened grip, clattering to the ground.

Patricia was equally stunned, not having expected Hunter to burst out of the crowd, and take the knife for her. Large beads of sweat trickled down Hunter's forehead.

He clenched his teeth, and with great difficulty, the words squeezed through, "Are you alright?"

Patricia shook her head. Before she could inquire about his condition, the man suddenly dropped to his knees, clinging tightly to her legs, weeping bitterly.

"Professor Watson, I'm so sorry, it was unintentional. I've heard of your reputation; I know you’re exceptional. Please, I beg you, save my daughter. She’s only five years old, her life has just begun, she shouldn't just die like this. Please... I’ll do anything you ask if you’ll save her."

"I..." She began.

Before Patricia could say anything else, the man, fearing her refusal, hurriedly added, "I was impulsive just now, not in my right mind. Please, if you agree to save Milly, you can hit me, or even slash me. "

With those words, he picked up the fruit knife from the ground, stuffed it into Patricia's hand, and then stretched his neck out before her.

"Go ahead and cut, I won’t blame you. Even if you kill me, I don't care, as long as you’re willing to save Milly. She is my life; I can't lose her. I am willing to trade my life for hers." His sincerity shone through, a genuine display of concern for Milly.

The fruit knife still bore Hunter's blood, dripping rhythmically down its sharp edge to the floor, a sound oddly distinct amidst the noisy hall. Watching a middle-aged man kneel before her without regard for the setting or his dignity, Patricia's compassion was stirred. She looked at Hunter, clearly conflicted.

Hunter, understanding her hesitation, nodded and whispered, "I'll go to the emergency room to get my wound treated. You handle their situation first; they're in worse shape than I am."

Patricia smiled gratefully at him and said to the man, "Come with me."

The dean, thinking Patricia's earlier offer to take over Milly's case was merely a stopgap, was surprised by her seriousness. "Professor Watson, are you really... um... given her special circumstances, have you thought this through?"

Patricia nodded decisively. "I have. We are doctors, we have a duty to our patients and their parents. We must not give up as long as there's the slightest hope."

Hearing her words, the dean nodded in agreement. "In that case, whatever you need, come to me or the department head. We will do our utmost to support you."

"Thank you!" After thanking him, Patricia gave the man a cue with her eyes. Immediately, he picked up his daughter from the floor and hurried after Patricia.

She had the man take Milly to the ward first, then brought him to the doctors' office to handle the paperwork for transferring Milly into her care, and finally issued a new series of examination orders for them.

A complete blood count, urinalysis, ultrasound, electrocardiogram, among others.

Seeing the extensive list of tests, the man's face turned red with embarrassment, struggling as he spoke, humbling himself before her.

"Can I owe for now? I... I'm out of money. To pay for Milly's treatment over the years, I’ve sold everything I could, and even things I shouldn’t have. Now, I have nothing left to sell. I’m all alone, even her mother ran off with another man." He started to cry again in his sorrow.

Patricia said with a smile, "Haven't I told you? From now on, all of Milly's expenses will be covered by the Angel Foundation! Just stay here and focus on the treatment, I'll take care of the rest."

Thinking he was dreaming; the man pinched his thigh hard. The real pain made him gasp, and only then did he realize it wasn't a dream. "Is it really true that I don't have to spend another penny?"

Patricia nodded emphatically, assuring him, "Yes, really not another penny. Going forward, come directly to me with any updates on Milly, and don't hesitate to ask if there's anything you don't understand. I'm her primary doctor now."

With everything falling into place so quickly, it took a while for the man to accept this good fortune. He dropped to his knees before Patricia, repeatedly bowing his head in gratitude.

"Thank you, thank you. If Milly can be saved, I am willing to do anything." Patricia bent down to help him up.

"You've already said thank you plenty of times, no need to say it again! Hurry up and take Milly to get checked out. My friend is injured, I'm going to see him first and come back later, to see Milly's test results."

Mentioning Hunter, the man's face was filled with guilt. "I'm sorry, it wasn’t intentional earlier, please apologize to your friend for me."

"It's okay! Hurry and take Milly for her examination; her condition is serious. I’ll call the examination room and ask for her to be given priority."

After hearing her words, the man was moved to tears, overwhelmed with gratitude after expressing his thanks once more, and finally left the office, tears streaming down his face.

Seeing the man depart, Dr. Powell, who had been silent in the office, couldn't help but say, "Professor Watson, are you really going to take on Milly's case?"

Patricia nodded, "Yes. Milly is only five. It would be too pitiful if she left us like this. I can't bear it."

Dr. Powell took a deep breath, "You don't know her situation. I'm afraid taking on her case might affect your reputation."

Patricia looked at him, "Didn't I just operate?"

Dr. Powell pursed his lips, angrily speaking about Debbie with clenched teeth. "You don’t know everything. Milly is just five, and given her conditions, she could have been treated with surgery, which, despite being difficult, offered a greater chance of curing her.”

“I don’t know if Debbie is too scared or just incapable, but she insisted on medicinal treatment. They started her on heavy doses of imported medicine from the start. The effects were quite good for the first two months.”

“Milly's parents were so grateful back then; they even presented several banners of appreciation. Unfortunately, Milly is only five, and the side effects of the heavy medication dose soon appeared.”

“Debbie switched through almost every drug she could use. We all know every drug has its side effects, but Milly's small body couldn’t withstand it. As a result, she suffered more and more from the medication reactions, with severe damage to her liver and kidneys.”

“Then Debbie put her on drugs to treat her liver and kidneys, leading to accumulated deteriorations, and Milly’s health was completely ruined. Not a single organ inside her was intact.”

“Our hospital knew her family had gone bankrupt trying to afford her treatment, so out of humanity, we suggested they should consider discharging and let Milly enjoy what she could of life, to accompany her through her final days.”

“If they really couldn’t let go, it would be better to take her to a specialized foreign hospital.
I know you're sympathetic to them, but in their current state, whoever takes over is just asking for bad luck. I wouldn't want your kindness to end up being a case of no good deed going unpunished."

After listening to Dr. Powell, Patricia was shocked and took a long time to regain her composure. She had not expected Milly's situation to be so grave, having only heard a rough summary earlier, she thought perhaps with her medical skills there could be a glimmer of hope.

She hadn’t known that, all her internal organs were damaged. Debbie was simply a disgrace to the medical field. She had no regard for human life.
