Chapter 1160 Selfishness

Lisa felt like she was dying, because the pain was unbearable.

Her whole body felt like it was on fire, burning with agony.

"I need to see Hannah, I need to see Charles. Charles promised to let me go. Hannah was raised by me; she wouldn't just stand by and watch this happen. Let them come see me." Even now, she clung to hope.

She believed it was Lassie who was deliberately torturing her.

Hannah was so devoted. Despite everything Lisa had done to her, Hannah still acknowledged her as her mother and supported the family financially after going to college.

A daughter as devoted as Hannah would never stand by and watch Lassie beat her.

And then there was Charles.

Ever since she agreed to let him date Hannah, Charles had treated her like his own mother.

He always made sure she had the best life.

He wouldn't bear to see her being mistreated either.

Lassie, tired from the beating, stopped and stood with her hands on her hips, catching her breath.

Lisa thought her threats had worked and smiled smugly. "I knew it. They wouldn't just stand by and watch you abuse me! I want to see them. Let them come see me."

Lassie laughed, and her eyes were full of mockery.

She laughed at how foolish Lisa was.

Indeed, if she weren't foolish, she wouldn't have treated Hannah so badly.

Austin gave her so much money every year. If she had been smart, she would have treated Hannah well and gotten even more money from Austin, instead of constantly abusing Hannah.

Lisa was a short-sighted, ignorant woman.

"Charles loves Hannah so much. Do you think, knowing how you abused her for years, leaving her covered in bruises every day, that he would save you?" Lassie mocked.

Lisa's already pale face turned even paler.

It was as if all the blood had been drained from her body.

Lassie said expressionlessly, "It was Charles who had you sent to prison. Do you think I could have gotten you out without his approval?"

Hearing this, Lisa felt like she was submerged in ice water, her body trembling uncontrollably.

Lassie squatted down, looking at her with biting sarcasm, and said through gritted teeth, "A vicious woman like you, Charles wants you dead more than anyone! He promised to let you go when he didn't know about your abuse of Hannah. Now that he knows, he won't forgive you or give you another chance to live a good life."

Lisa was utterly desperate.

Because she knew what Lassie said was true.

She had been imprisoned by Charles's people. Since Lassie got her out, Charles's people would have informed him.

She had been held here for so long. If Charles wanted to save her, he would have come by now.

His absence meant he had tacitly agreed.

Lassie continued, "And Hannah. Where do you get the confidence to think that, after all the abuse, she would still be grateful to you?"

Lisa refused to accept this reality, shaking her head repeatedly. "No. She wouldn't disown me. She wouldn't stop being grateful."

Lassie sneered, "She was grateful to you because she thought you were her biological mother! That's why she could endure your endless verbal and physical abuse!

Now that she knows you're not her biological mother, the last bit of blood tie between you is gone. Why would she forgive you for what you've done?

If you had loved her before, maybe she would still respect you.

But you? You shattered all her hopes and dreams of family. She felt no mother-daughter bond with you! Luckily, she was optimistic enough, otherwise..."

Lassie couldn't bear to continue.

Cases of kids being bullied to the point of depression and suicide were all too common.

Lisa's behavior was even worse than that of a bully.

She couldn't imagine if Hannah hadn't been naturally optimistic, would she have fallen into depression and not survived until Lassie found her?

Lassie's anger, which had subsided after beating Lisa, flared up again.

Thinking of her daughter's suffering, she stood up straight and started beating Lisa again.

But this time, Lisa couldn't hold on. After just five hits, she passed out.

The floor was covered in her blood.

The thick smell of blood spread through the airtight basement.

Quentin was so scared he didn't dare to breathe loudly. Seeing his wife pass out, he didn't rush over to check on her. Instead, he cowered in the corner, closing his eyes, thinking that if he couldn't see it, it had nothing to do with him, and he could avoid everything.

Seeing Lisa pass out, Lassie handed the feather duster to a bodyguard.

She looked at Quentin, knowing he was secretly listening, and said, "There's plenty of time. We'll stop here for today. When she wakes up, tell her I'll come every day and beat her every day! Let her truly understand what it means to live a life worse than death."

With that, she left without looking back.

Quentin's body shook like a leaf.

He didn't dare to open his eyes.

Not until he heard the door close and the surroundings fell silent again did he open one eye, sneaking a peek. Confirming that Lassie and Carter had really left, he breathed a sigh of relief and crawled over to Lisa.

Seeing his wife lying in a pool of blood, covered in wounds, he was terrified.

Gently lifting Lisa's head onto his lap, he trembled as he patted her face. "Honey, wake up, wake up."

A grown man, reduced to tears by fear.

His voice and body trembled.

But Lisa didn't respond at all, looking as if she were dead, her face frighteningly pale.

"Wow." Quentin couldn't hold back his fear any longer and started crying.

"How did things end up like this? How could Hannah be the Moore family's daughter? Why did the Moore family find out about your abuse of Hannah? If we had known, we wouldn't have gotten involved in this!

If I had known, I would have stopped you.

Now look, we've offended the Moore family. What are we going to do now?

And Oliver, he's all alone in Country D, without any relatives. Does he still have money?

We haven't gone to him. Is he worried?

Without us, what will he do?

Hannah will never forgive us, will she? Otherwise, how could she let her biological mother torture you like this?

I hope they don't take it out on me. I barely escaped with my life. I don't want to die so soon. I haven't lived enough yet."

He was terrified of the unknown future.

How would they get through the coming days?

His wife was so badly injured that and couldn't go out.

If something really happened, he would be left alone, locked up here with no one to keep him company.

Quentin was completely consumed by despair.

But he didn't realize that from beginning to end, he only cared about himself and his son.

He didn't want his wife to die because he was afraid of being alone.

Mentioning Hannah was just a hope that she would forgive them and save them.

From start to finish, he never cared if his wife was in pain or suffering.
