Chapter 810 Discovered
Hannah was momentarily stunned but quickly remembered it was her fault. Without overthinking, she lowered her head and sincerely apologized, "I'm sorry, it won't happen again."
But Gordon wasn't letting it go.
"Everyone in our department is competent. We don't keep anyone who isn't! If you want to stay, prove yourself."
He implied Hannah was just a tag-along with no real skills.
Hannah felt uneasy and frowned but didn't argue.
Her silence only made Gordon push harder.
"Since you're late, you need to be punished! Today, you're on errand and cleaning duty, and you must write a self-criticism and read it to everyone. If they forgive you, fine. If not, think about your next steps."
He was going overboard.
Colleagues exchanged smug glances.
Hannah finally snapped. She looked up and angrily said, "I was late. I admit it and I'm willing to apologize! But I've never heard that being late once means writing a self-criticism and reading it out loud. And needing everyone's forgiveness? That's new to me!"
Gordon's face changed immediately.
"I'm the director here. I decide how to handle things. If you don't like it, leave. We don't need people like you."
Hannah sneered and shot back, "You're the director, but Charles Watson is the company president, and he sets the rules! According to Article 4, the first time being late gets a verbal warning. The second time, a written warning. The third time, a quarter's bonus is deducted. The fourth time, a company-wide criticism. The fifth time, dismissal. Today is my first time being late, so I should get a verbal warning. Are you trying to override Mr. Watson and set your own rules?" She spoke confidently, showing no fear.
She had memorized the company's rules the night before starting work. It was the least respect she could show for the job.
Gordon's face twisted in anger.
"You're good. This is the first time I've met such an arrogant employee. I can't handle you. Get out."
Hannah stood firm, "The company placed me here! I didn't do anything wrong. On what grounds are you kicking me out?"
Gordon was livid.
He didn't expect this seemingly easy-to-bully Hannah to be so sharp-tongued. Usually, he made decisions without anyone daring to contradict him.
Gordon snapped, "I'm the director here. I question your abilities and have the right to refuse you!"
Hannah's face turned red with anger.
"You haven't given me any tasks. How do you know my work ability is lacking?" she shot back.
She didn't desperately need this job—she was just a freshman. But she couldn't stand being wronged. If she had to leave, it wouldn't be unjustly.
Gordon retorted, "If I think you're incompetent, why would I risk giving you work? If you mess up, we'll have to fix it."
Hannah's eyes welled up with tears. Her colleagues looked on smugly.
"You're abusing your power for personal revenge," she accused.
Gordon smirked, "Yeah, I am. What can you do about it?"
He was still bitter about yesterday. He had opened a room for nothing.
"Get out! This place isn't for you," Gordon shouted. "Everyone here earned their spot. You had a chance and blew it! Even if you stay, you won't last."
Hannah felt more wronged than ever. Tears streamed down her face. She wanted to leave but couldn't stand the injustice.
"You're isolating me because I didn't sleep with you last night," she said, recalling how Gordon tried to take advantage of her when she was drunk.
Gordon didn't deny it. "Yeah, you're not stupid. If you'd behaved last night, we wouldn't be here."
Colleagues' faces changed, signaling to Gordon. Hannah noticed someone at the door.
Gordon, oblivious, continued, "Even if Mr. Watson comes, if I say you're out, you're out. Who dares to question me?"
"Really? I didn't know you were so capable! How about you take my position then?" Charles Watson's voice cut in.
Gordon's face turned pale. He stiffly turned around to see Charles standing there, trembling with fear.
"Mr. Watson, why are you here?" Gordon stammered.
When did he arrive? How much did he hear? If Charles knew he tried to sleep with an employee, he was done for.
