Chapter 606 Waiting for the Arrival of Death

After coming out of the restroom, Martin found himself ushered back to his hospital room by Patricia. She promptly summoned a doctor to conduct a thorough examination of his frail body.In accordance with their pre-arranged agreement, the doctor maintained the facade of Martin's condition, offering Patricia the same rehearsed narrative as before.Despite the doctor's assurances, Patricia remained apprehensive, scrutinizing Martin's test results with a discerning eye. The results mirrored the previous ones, revealing the same persistent issue. It was not immediately life-threatening, but there was no sign of improvement either. To Patricia, the lack of deterioration was a small victory in itself.Word of Martin's survival quickly rippled through the veins of Ivara City, reaching every corner and crevice. Patricia's phone became a constant stream of messages, each one a testament to the widespread relief at the news.Even the Koch family, residing in the distant Country Y, received the news."Patricia, I've heard that Martin lives. Can it be true?" Mr. Langley's voice wavered with a blend of hope and trepidation.Patricia nodded, forgetting for a moment that Mr. Langley couldn't see her. She quickly responded, "Yes, it's true. He's alive."A sigh of relief escaped him, his voice trembling with joy. "That's wonderful... I'll have Jeremy ready a private jet. I'll be there as soon as I can."The thought of his granddaughter not becoming a widow at such a tender age filled him with a surge of elation, his eyes welling up with unshed tears.

Patricia, however, was quick to dissuade him. "There's no need, Shane. The journey would be too taxing on your health. We'll visit you together when Martin feels better."

Mr. Langley understood the unspoken message behind her words and asked with a hint of worry, "What's wrong with him? It's not serious, is it?"Patricia attempted to assuage his fears, "There's no need to worry, Shane. It's a minor issue. Rest and recovery are all he needs."Despite her reassurances, Mr. Langley's worry lingered, but he refrained from pressing further. He knew that if Patricia chose to keep the truth hidden, no amount of questioning would reveal it."As long as he's alright, that's all that matters. Please, ensure he's well taken care of."Believing that Mr. Langley had acquiesced to her request, Patricia smiled and replied, "Of course! We'll visit you together when he's better."After ending the call, Mr. Langley immediately instructed Jeremy to prepare the private plane for the Koch family. He felt compelled to see Martin personally, to put his mind at ease.No sooner had Mr. Langley hung up than Patricia's phone rang again. With a sigh, she retreated to the balcony to answer the call. The calls seemed endless, and by the time she returned from the balcony, an hour had passed.Just as she settled down and took a sip of water, the ward door swung open. A group of familiar faces tumbled in - Ryan, Jade Williams, Carter, Lassie, Alan, and Frank Taylor. They stumbled a few steps before regaining their balance, looking as though they had been pushed in by an invisible force.Patricia chuckled at the sight, "Did you all plan to come together?""We just ran into each other downstairs!" Ryan replied nonchalantly, his gaze immediately drawn to Martin. Upon confirming it was indeed Martin, his eyes welled up with tears as he enveloped him in a tight hug."Boss, you're not dead... that's great... I thought you were gone. I've been so distraught..." Ryan's voice broke, his tears soaking Martin's hospital gown. A man of his stature, reduced to a weeping child.

Jade's lips formed a tight line, her expression one of distaste. "Ryan, how old are you that you still cry? Aren't you embarrassed?" she chided.Ryan sniffed forcefully, spinning around to face her with a defiant glare. "Can't I be happy? Who said adults can't cry?" he retorted.Jade Williams surveyed him from head to toe, her lips curling into a pout. "Adults can cry, but adults don't cry with snot all over their faces like you," she shot back.Ryan's frustration simmered to the surface. "Why are you always singling me out? Is there some sort of vendetta here?" he demanded.Jade Williams responded with a cool detachment, "It's nothing personal. I just find you intolerable.""What?" Ryan stammered, taken aback by her bluntness. He was infuriated by her, but he didn't want to say anything too harsh, fearing it would incite her anger.Frank Taylor, sensing the tension, lightly patted Jade Williams' shoulder and rested his arm there. "Alright, stop it! We're here to see Mr. Langley. Let's not fight in the patient's room," he interjected.Jade Williams stuck out her tongue at Ryan, "For Frank Taylor's sake, I won't argue with you."Ryan felt a pang of displeasure, his eyes narrowing at the sight of Frank Taylor's arm on Jade Williams' shoulder, his teeth grinding in silent protest."What kind of relationship do you two have? Why do you seem to heed his words so closely?" he demanded.Jade Williams remained silent, her reply hanging in the air like an unfinished thought. She had intended to diffuse the tension and spare Ryan further discomfort by avoiding confrontation. Unexpectedly, he had chosen to provoke her instead."What's it to you?" she retorted."You... you... you..." Ryan stuttered, his anger boiling over. He pointed at her for a long time but couldn't find a retort.Carter frowned. "Ryan, that's enough! After finally seeing Martin, you're planning to keep arguing like this?" he scolded.Ryan's eyes were spitting fire, wanting nothing more than to pull Frank Taylor's hand off Jade Williams' shoulder, but he had no position to do so, so he could only stare in silence.Carter, no longer willing to deal with him, walked to Martin's bedside. He quietly observed Martin for a while before finally speaking. "Martin, I never thought I would see you again."Martin looked at Carter and said, "You... you've lost a lot of weight. How's your health?"
Carter said, "I have completely recovered! And you?"Martin's eyes glanced in Patricia's direction, and he replied calmly, "I'm fine."Carter instantly understood his meaning. His chest felt like it was filled with cotton, making him feel uncomfortable and unable to speak up. He could only keep it to himself."Why have you been avoiding me since you came back? I've been looking for you for a long time," he questioned. He had given the boss a fake identity, James, to return to the country. After coming back, the boss disappeared without a trace. He was afraid something had happened to the boss, so he had people searching for him everywhere, but they found nothing. He never expected that the boss would actually be with his sister-in-law. The most dangerous person was often the safest place. Why hadn't he thought of it back then?Martin lowered his eyes sadly and said nothing. What else could he say?
He had originally just wanted to help Patricia take care of the company's affairs and then secretly find a place to wait for death. He didn't want to see his loved ones heartbroken because of him. But now, things were becoming more and more uncontrollable. On the day he died, today's joy would turn into sadness. His silence was like a sharp blade that stabbed deeply into Carter and Patricia's hearts. Only they knew what this silence represented. And because they knew, their hearts continued to ache.
