Chapter 134 The Struggle for Charles with Patricia.
Patricia was driving, mulling over her impending conversation with Samuel, when her phone rang again. She answered using the car's Bluetooth system, "Hello…"
Samuel's deep voice filled the compact car's cabin, "Martin is following you. Lose him. I don't want him involved."
Checking the rearview mirror at his warning, Patricia indeed spotted Martin's car. His Maybach was two vehicles behind, maintaining a cautious distance that would hardly be noticeable unless one was looking intently.
Patricia sneered, "He's Charles' father; of course, he's involved. Why should I stop him from knowing?"
Samuel's voice suddenly dropped, "If you let him know, I won't guarantee my next step. You'll regret it."
The naked threat clenched Patricia's hold on the steering wheel, channeling her rage. Predicting her acquiescence, Samuel ended the call.
Patricia glared in the rearview mirror, recalling the authority and influence Samuel wielded despite no longer managing the Langley Group. Earning his ire was unwise.
To shake Martin, Patricia drove into a mall's underground garage and used elevators and escalators to mingle with the crowd and evade him, finally slipping away unnoticed.
As soon as she took the elevator, Martin had called Alan to have the mall monitor CCTV to track her movements.
By the time the surveillance was checked, she had already been gone for half an hour, leaving Martin with nothing but frustration and regret.
The chase for answers and the struggle for control tangle further, as a family's legacy and personal vendettas converge in the shadows of a city's skyline.
Martin pursed his thin lips; his handsome face became expressionless, and his heroic brows were furrowed in a frosty chill. On the phone, Alan spoke cautiously,
"Boss, Mrs. Langley seems to have realized you were following her, so she deliberately lost you."
"…?" Martin's voice darkened as he retorted,
"If you don't speak, no one will take you for a mute."
Alan: "…?? Then, do I need to contact the authorities for the surveillance footage from the street? However, it might take a bit longer." Alan questioned.
"No need! Isn't there a video conference this afternoon? Change it to an offline meeting, I'm coming to the office immediately." Martin felt utterly humiliated.
He had lost face completely. Not only had Patricia noticed he was tailing her, but Alan was aware as well. To continue following her would only result in the complete loss of his dignity.
Besides, by the time they accessed the surveillance footage and he scurried after her, Patricia might have already left the scene, and he might even end up being a laughingstock for both Patricia and Alan.
He would not do such a foolish thing! Martin got into his car angrily, slammed the door forcefully to vent all the fury and jealousy within him.
What exactly was the relationship between Hunter and Patricia that warranted such secrecy? If it were just a casual meeting between friends, why would she be afraid of him following?
Could it be, they had an unspeakable connection? With this thought, his anger could no longer be suppressed, and in a sudden motion, he floored the accelerator. The Maybach darted off like an arrow released from a bow—
After eluding Martin, Patricia entered the nostalgic Old Time Restaurant and headed to the private room 108.
Samuel was leisurely sitting there, savoring his tea. Upon her arrival, he personally poured her a cup. However, Patricia had no appetite and took a seat across him without wasting time, diving straight into the matter,
"I do not know the purpose of your invitation today, but my answer will never change. I absolutely won't let go of Charles."
Samuel's lips curled into a faint smile as he spoke, "When it comes to Charles, I am determined as well."
Patricia couldn't fathom where his confidence came from, but she defiantly tilted her chin, "If I refuse, do you plan to take him by force? Although I have neither power nor influence to win over you, you might not understand Charles's character.”
“No one can compel him against his will. If you want him to see you as an enemy and hate you, go ahead and try! But I'm afraid that in the end, not only will you not have Charles, but you might also lose Randy's heart." Patricia explained.
Since their last encounter, Samuel noticed that Patricia had changed, becoming more decisive and articulate.
But he didn't expect that she'd also become bolder, daring even to threaten him. "The last time Charles and you were kidnapped together, if it hadn't been for Martin, you'd probably be dead by now, and Charles would have been sold off to Country T, right?"
Patricia wasn't surprised that he knew about the incident, and to avoid showing weakness, she asked with feigned calm, "Does this have anything to do with our current discussions?"
Samuel didn't answer but instead continued, "Yesterday, you were kidnapped by Jocelyn Thomas again. If it weren't for Martin's appearance, you would end up like Debbie."
Patricia was unsure about what Samuel hoped to achieve by mentioning these events. Opting for silence, she just quietly observed him, waiting for him to reveal the answer.
Samuel admired her calm under pressure, his smile deepening, as he spoke.
"Do you think someone who can't protect themselves is capable of protecting a child?"
His words struck Patricia profoundly. She wanted to argue, but after a long pondering, she couldn't find a single counter-argument. Seeing her shaken, Samuel continued:
"Although kidnappings and trafficking aren't daily occurrences, can you assure they won't happen again in the future? Charles is a descendant of the Langley family—how many people covet the Langley family's fortune?”
“Randy has bodyguards for protection, but what about Charles? If a kidnapping incident occurs again, can you guarantee you'll turn the situation around as before? These matters can't be left to chance; we can't afford to risk it." Samuel said harshly.
Patricia's resolute heart began to sway bit by bit under his words. Indeed, she couldn't afford to gamble—matters like these couldn't have even a hint of uncertainty or she'd regret it for a lifetime.
Samuel could see his words were taking effect. Pouring out the cooled tea in front of Patricia, he personally served her another cup as he spoke:
"If it becomes known that Charles is a descendent of the Langley family, he would be in danger. The Langley family is his best sanctuary; only the Langley family can fully protect him. Besides, he's just returning to the Langley family, not leaving you—you can still come back to visit him whenever you miss him. These aren't conflicting options."
These words turned Patricia's face deathly pale, her hands unconsciously gripping the hem of her clothes tightly. After a fierce internal struggle, she clenched her teeth,
"I—I choose to remarry Martin!"
If this was the only way to not be separated from Charles, she would marry again. Even though she still harbored resentment towards Martin for his cruelty five years ago, for the sake of her child, she was willing to set aside all past grievances.
Hearing her declaration, Samuel shook his head with a strategic laugh, "No, if it had been a week ago, I would have agreed to your remarriage. But now, it’s not acceptable."
Patricia felt as if her blood had rushed to her head; confused, she inquired, "Why?"
