Chapter 772: Letting Danger Inside

Lassie and Carter's fancy SUV pulled up to the Moore family estate gates.

The grand iron gates swung open. Just as they were about to drive in, a baby's cry came from outside.

Holding Violet, Lassie asked Carter, "Do you hear that? A baby crying? How could there be a kid out in this snow?"

Carter, confused, rolled down the window and saw a basin at the entrance. The crying was coming from there.

"Wait here," Carter said, stepping out.

As he got closer, the crying got louder. Inside the basin, he found a baby wrapped in a thin blanket, shivering and hoarse from crying.

He quickly picked up the baby and rushed back to the warm car.

Lassie, eyes wide, asked, "Is that a baby? Where did you find him?"

Carter pointed outside, "Left at our gate with a tattered blanket. The family must be too poor to care for him."

Lassie put her sleeping daughter in the cradle and took the baby from Carter. The baby was beautiful, with delicate features, but was frostbitten and covered in frost.

Furious, Lassie said, "No matter how poor, you don't leave a baby in the snow! He could've died. How heartless!"

Carter said, "Let's get home first and talk there."

Lassie answered, "Alright."

The SUV drove into the villa. To keep Lassie warm, they parked right at the entrance, stepping directly into the house.

Lassie carried the baby, and Carter carried Violet, back to their warm home. Carter told the servants to prepare some milk.

The baby, feeling warm, stopped crying and stared curiously at the chandelier.

Lassie checked the baby's gender, "It's a boy."

She added, "He looks so young, probably just born! He's so thin, like he hasn't eaten properly."

Carter frowned, "Why was he left at our doorstep?"

Just then, the servant brought the milk. Lassie sat on the sofa, placed the baby on her lap, and fed him.

The baby, clearly starving, latched onto the nipple and sucked eagerly.

While Lassie fed the baby, Carter checked the surveillance footage. It showed a ragged woman placing the basin at the gate over an hour ago, looking around briefly before walking away without looking back.

The woman was a mess, her clothes in rags. Even though she abandoned the baby, her face was unrecognizable.

Carter said, "This was intentional! I'll have Colton Reed find her." Colton was Carter's executive assistant.

Lassie stopped him, "Don't bother! If the woman left him on purpose, she won't take him back. She could just abandon him again. In this cold, the baby will suffer. Let's keep him."

Carter was surprised, "Keep him?"

Lassie nodded, glancing at Violet, "He can be a friend for our daughter! Look at Martin's house, so many kids, it's lively! We only have Violet, and she has no one to play with. Charles is in elementary school now. He can't come over every day."

Carter thought she had a point, "Alright, we'll keep him. If his mother comes back, we'll let the child decide whether to stay or go."

Lassie smiled, "We need to get him an adoption certificate! Otherwise, he'll be undocumented."

Carter laughed, patting his chest, "No problem. I'll have Colton handle it. It'll be done quickly!"

Lassie looked at the baby, growing more fond of him. She hadn't liked kids before, thinking they were noisy. But now, she adored every child she saw, especially this beautiful baby.

Carter, staring at the baby, said, "We need to give him a name."

Lassie thought for a moment and smiled, "How about Austin Moore?"

"Austin?" Carter repeated, then nodded, "That's a good name! Austin it is!"

Lassie played with Austin's cheeks, "Austin, Austin! From now on, your name is Austin! Be a good boy! We'll take good care of you!"

Austin seemed to understand, staring at Lassie.

In the evening, Patricia brought Charles and Fannie to visit. When they heard about the found baby, they were astonished.

Patricia asked, "Found a child? In this day and age?"

Lassie looked at Violet and Austin lying side by side, her eyes full of affection.

Lassie said, "We checked the surveillance. The baby was left at our gate on purpose. In this cold, we couldn't let him freeze. His mother looked like she was struggling, dressed in rags. She probably couldn't afford to raise him and had no choice but to abandon him. I think she chose our doorstep carefully."

Patricia pursed her lips, "She sure knows how to pick! Choosing a well-off family for her child!"

Lassie laughed, "Exactly! If it were me, I'd also choose a good family before abandoning a child!"

Patricia looked at Austin's face and frowned, "Why does he look so familiar? Have I seen him somewhere before?"
