Chapter 835: Hannah Falls for Charles
When Hannah rolled into the office, Wyatt was chillin' behind Charles's desk, chatting about some acquisition deal.
Wyatt heard the door and looked up, totally caught off guard seeing Hannah lugging in a mountain of files.
"Didn't Mr. Watson say it was just the two of them pulling an all-nighter? What's Hannah doing here?" Wyatt thought.
Seeing Wyatt and Charles deep in convo, Hannah figured she couldn't jump in right away. "You guys probably haven't eaten yet! The cafeteria's still got some grub, I'll grab you something."
Charles nodded, "Wyatt's not into spicy stuff, but he's cool with anything else. Whatever works."
"Got it! Be right back!" Hannah nodded, dumped the files on Charles's desk, and headed out.
She spent like half an hour getting dinner.
By the time she got back with the food, Charles and Wyatt had already wrapped up the acquisition stuff.
Hannah set up the food on the table and opened the lunch boxes, "Food's ready, dig in! You'll need the energy to keep going."
Charles nodded, stashed the files away, and moved to the sofa with Wyatt to chow down.
They ate while still talking shop.
Hannah felt totally out of the loop.
She was new and barely keeping up with her own tasks.
Charles's work was a whole different ball game, and she was lost but didn't wanna butt in.
After dinner, Charles and Wyatt got back to it.
People in the office started clearing out, even the overtime crew was gone.
Hannah couldn't do much, but she was all in on learning, hoping to catch on quick.
By the time they wrapped up, it was already 10 p.m.
Charles stretched his neck and said, "It's late, you guys should head home."
"Yeah, you get some rest too!" Wyatt didn't ask much, packed up, and bounced.
But Hannah couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Watson, what about you? Aren't you heading home?"
Charles rubbed his temples, "I'll finish up this last bit and then leave! It's late, you should go home first."
Hannah shook her head, "I'll stay with you!"
Charles looked surprised and raised an eyebrow, "You'll stay with me?"
Hannah nodded and sat down across from him, "I might not be much help with work, but I can assist! Plus, everyone's gone, and you're the only one left! I can't just leave you here alone."
Charles chuckled, his mood lifting.
Whether Hannah was Violet or not, he couldn't deny that being around her made him feel good.
He liked having her around.
"Alright then! There's not much left anyway. You chill on the sofa and wait. If I need anything, I'll holler! When I'm done, I'll drive you home."
Hannah nodded and plopped down on the sofa.
After a quick break, Charles dove back into work.
Hannah, bored, watched him.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows behind Charles, it was pitch black, but the office was lit up. The lights cast a soft glow on him, making his features look both hazy and deep.
No matter when or where, he always grabbed everyone's attention.
She thought Charles was the most impressive guy she'd ever met.
She used to think Austin was top-notch.
But compared to Charles, Austin was kinda meh.
Hannah was deep in thought, not even realizing she was subconsciously comparing Charles and Austin, or noticing her shifting feelings.
Charles was all in on his work, totally oblivious to Hannah's changing gaze.
Finally, he wrapped up the last bit of work. Charles shut his laptop and stretched, "All done! It's late, let me drive you home!"
Honestly, Hannah hadn't been much help.
But for some reason, just having her there made Charles feel calm and comfy, even boosting his work efficiency.
Hannah didn't want him to drive her home.
She hadn't said no earlier 'cause she didn't wanna slow things down.
Now that he was done, she quickly shook her head, "No need! My place is close, I can walk! You should head home first!"
Charles didn't argue. He walked over, grabbed her wrist, and led her out of the office.
As they got in the elevator, he turned off the lights on the whole floor.
Charles took Hannah straight to the underground parking lot and practically shoved her into the passenger seat.
Hannah still tried to get out.
"Mr. Watson, really, there's no need! It's just a short walk for me! If you drive me, it'll take longer. It's late; you should go home and rest!"
Charles walked around the car, got in the driver's seat, started the engine, and asked, "You hungry?"
Hannah looked at him, surprised.
Charles smiled, "I'm hungry. Let's grab a bite first, then I'll take you home."
Hannah was so shocked she didn't even get a chance to refuse and was whisked away by Charles.
She was so anxious she almost cried, staring out the window with a sense of grievance. She wanted to go back but couldn't bring herself to say no to Charles.
Actually, she wasn't hungry at all.
After dinner, she hadn't moved much, and the food in her stomach hadn't even settled yet!
She wasn't hungry, and neither was Charles.
The real reason he suggested a late-night snack was that he wanted to spend more time with Hannah.
He hadn't felt this relaxed and happy in ages.
Charles took Hannah to a restaurant near the company.
Remembering she had eaten at a food stall with Stella last time, he decided to come here.
Charles handed the menu to Hannah, "What do you wanna eat?"
Hannah didn't want to upset him, so she randomly picked a few things.
"Let's skip the drinks tonight! I've only been working a few days and already got drunk twice. I can't handle more."
Charles didn't push it, just ordered some skewers, juice, and a fruit platter.
What they didn't know was that just after they left, Austin showed up, parking his car across the street from IntelliMerge Technologies. He rolled down the window and looked up.
He saw the lights in the CEO's office on the top floor were off.
The whole building was dark.
It meant Hannah had already left work.
Austin immediately drove to Hannah's place.
But the doorbell rang for ages, and no one answered.
A bad feeling hit him hard.
He fought his unease, trembling as he punched in the password.
The door opened.
But inside, it was dark, and no one was there.
Austin's bloodshot eyes looked especially menacing in the dark, like a wounded beast hiding in the shadows, seething with madness.
