Chapter 290 Charlotte is the Double Agent
Alan rushed to the police station and couldn't help but feel a mix of anger and amusement at his detained men.
As the police were still questioning them, the officer became snarky upon seeing the bail bond,. "A kidnapper still gets bailed out? You're becoming too brazen. Let's see—"
He cut himself off as he turned and saw Alan.
"LuAl... Alan?"
Alan's work for Martin made him a familiar face in all of Ivara City's police stations.
Seeing him was as good as seeing Martin himself.
Everyone held a hint of reverence for him.
The police officer, having not expected to run into Alan, was suddenly at a loss for words, stuttering,. "They... they are Mr. Langley's men?"
Alan's lips curved into a smile, but the warmth didn't reach his eyes.
"Do I need to provide proof?"
The officer broke into a cold sweat, his head shaking frantically,. "No, no need!. It was our mistake, not recognizing them!. Please, feel free to take them."
Alan's gaze fell coldly upon them,. "Take them away? Do you realize the immense, irreparable damage your blunder has cost us? We reserve the right to pursue this further."
Without another word, he turned and left.
The cop was completely dumbfounded, feeling like crying but having no tears.
After leaving the station, he called Martin and explained what had happened.
Martin sat in his car, gripping the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white from the strain.
The chill inside the cramped vehicle seemed to creep in from every corner.
Even through the phone, Alan could feel Martin's seething anger. He hung his head in shame and said, "Boss, I'm sorry, I didn't get it done. Mrs. Martin has been taken to Country M country."."
Martin made a snap decision. "Arrange a trip to Country M country immediately."
Alan took a deep breath. "Boss, Country M country is the Miller family's turf. Rushing over there might not only fail to save her, but it could also land us in Hunter's trap. He's cunning and ruthless, probably has a snare set, and is waiting for us to jump right in. We need to plan this out thoroughly first."
Hearing this, Martin calmed down, starting to analyze the situation seriously.
Noticing Martin's silence, Alan continued,. "Hunter has gone throughto great lengths, which shows he genuinely wants her. That means she is probably safe for now. We have to stay cool and not act rashly. Besides, Miss Fannie is waiting for you back at the hotel."
At the mention of Fannie, her adorable face unwittingly flashed across Martin's mind, instantly softurening his heart soft.
After a moment's thoughtmoment, he said, "Keep a close eye on Hunter and report back to me with facts."
"Yes, I'll handle it," came the reply.
Ending the call, Martin sat in his car a little longer, his mood growing restless as he watched the throngs of people moving in and out of the airport.
Then another call came – it was Frank.
Annoyed, he answered the phone and cut straight to the chase,. "Patricia's been taken to Country M country by Hunter. The plane's already left."
Frank deflated, heavy with guilt. "This is my fault. I should've stopped Patricia from seeking out Hunter."
Martin replied, tersely, "It's too late for regrets now!. I'll find a way to bring her back."
He was about to hang up when Frank quickly added, "Wait, there's something else I forgot to tell you."
Martin put the phone back to his ear. "What is it?"
Frank delivered the troubling news,. "You've still got a mole for Hunter close by."
Upon hearing the question, Martin's eyes narrowed sharply, a barely concealed anger surfacing:. "Who?"
Frank shook his head,. "I have no idea!. Hunter is cautious with his operations. He told me that someone would act as an informant for me,and instructed me to stay in touch with this person, but he didn't reveal any details. If I had to guess, it'd be someone close to you."
Someone close?
Martin's handsome face turned thunderous as he ran through the list of those close to him in his mind. The list of people he trusted was short.
The list of people he trusted was short.
Alan?
Luke?
Charlotte—
Just asAs her name flashed across his mind, Frank's voice broke through again,. "Think about it. Have you been approached recently by someone seemingly close, but not too close?"
Originally, Martin had just been speculating, but Frank's remark intensified his suspicion.
"I understand. I'll get to the bottom of this. Thank you."
Frank fell silent for a moment, his voice choked with emotion,. "I'm just doing what I should. My cowardice and incompetence got Fannie killed. Nothing I do can ever make up for that."
Martin hesitated, then decided to break the news to him,. "Fannie isn't dead."
Frank thought he had misheard, astounded, he asked, "What did you say? Fannie isn't dead?"
"That's right," Martin affirmed, said. "I saved her at the last moment. I feared Hunter would come after her if he knew she was alive, so I placed her somewhere incredibly safe."
Frank was overcome with emotion, struggling to speak,. "You're telling the truth? You're not just trying to comfort me?"
You're not just trying to comfort me?"
"I have no reason to comfort you." Martin's face gave nothing away.
With the confirmation that Fannie was alive, Frank's eyes flooded with tears.
"Oh, thank God!. Fannie's alive, that's... that's wonderful..."
Martin could sense Frank's sincere love for Fannie and Charles, and involuntarily softened his tone a bit,. "I'll arrange a meeting for you when the time is right."
And then there was Charles.
Since Hunter had taken Patricia back to the States.
ItCountry M, it seemed he had no plans to return.
Fannie wasn't in danger for the moment.
With that in mind, it was alright to share the news of Fannie's survival with Frank and Charles—to spare them the grief they'd been carrying.
"Alright, I'll be waiting for your update."
Frank nodded vigorously.
Nothing was too much to ask if it meant seeing Fannie again.
...
On the plane.
Patricia, fastened to her seat, was under a mandatory examination as the accompanying doctor checked her over.
Surveying Patricia's injuries with many questions he dared not ask, the doctor silently performed his duty, inspecting her thoroughly.
"Mr. Miller, don't worry, Miss Watson has only sustained some superficial injuries.
There's nothing serious, and they should heal just fine with a bit of ointment in a few days."
Hunter asked, "How about the baby? Everything okay there?"
The doctor shook his head, "No. "There are no signs of miscarriage for now. Everything should be fine; the baby appears healthy."
Disappointment was hard to Hunter couldn't hide on Hunter's face.
his disappointment. If only the baby werewas gone.; Iit would have saved him the trouble of arranging for a procedurean abortion.
CatchingSeeing his expression, Patricia's heart plummeted.
Hunter , realizing he truly couldn't accept the unborn child.
