Chapter 815: Scandal
Hannah dragged Charles over to one of the dining spots.
"So, what do you wanna eat? How 'bout a burrito?" she asked.
For some reason, when she saw those burritos, she just knew Charles would dig 'em, and the words just slipped out.
Charles raised an eyebrow, "Why do you think I'd like burritos?"
Hannah tilted her head, looking all confident, "You don't like 'em? I dunno, I just got a feeling you would."
Charles found himself staring at her, totally dazed.
He had no clue what was going on.
He always kinda saw Hannah as Violet.
Over the years, he'd seen tons of people who looked like Violet, but never once did he mistake them for her.
This was a first.
"I used to love 'em, but it's been a while," Charles replied.
"Why?" Hannah asked, all curious.
Why? Violet's face popped into Charles's mind.
All those emotions.
Sadly, he hadn't seen her in years.
No idea when he'd see her again.
Thinking about it made him sad.
Hannah noticed the change in his expression. It was the first time she'd seen him look like that.
Why did he look so down?
"Charles, what's up? Did you remember something?" she asked, concerned.
Her words snapped him out of it. He blinked and shook his head, "Nah, I'm good. Just thought of someone."
"Who?" Hannah asked, still curious.
Charles didn't wanna go there, so he switched it up, "I'll take a burrito! You handle the rest! I'll grab us a seat."
Hannah made an "ok" gesture, all playful.
"Go on! I'll be right there," she said.
Charles chuckled, scoped out the place, and the folks at the nearest table quickly made room for them.
He didn't stand on ceremony and plopped down.
His seat was right across from Hannah.
He watched her order, grab a tray, and ladle some free soup.
She moved like a pro.
Charles found himself lost in thought again.
Everyone noticed his odd behavior, exchanged looks, and kinda figured out what was up.
The kitchen was super quick.
In no time, Hannah came back with the food, all smiles.
"Charles, I wasn't sure what you'd like, so I got you a burrito. The rest are my faves! But I figured you might not be into spicy stuff, so I got spicy fried chicken for me, and the rest is mild."
Charles raised an eyebrow, surprised, "How'd you know I don't like spicy food?"
His taste was just like his dad Martin's—mild flavors, no spicy or salty stuff.
When he was younger, he loved salty food like Fannie.
But as he got older, he leaned towards milder flavors.
Hannah didn't think it was weird at all. She set the tray down and sat across from him.
"Just a hunch!" she said.
Charles felt something weird in his chest.
Before he could start doubting, Hannah's next words wiped away any doubts he had.
Hannah said, "Even though my folks and I moved to Germany, I've been here for a few years. Noticed people here aren't big on spicy stuff, more into mild flavors. Guess that's why!"
Charles's doubts vanished just like that.
Hannah, looking like she hadn't eaten in ages, neatly arranged the dishes and started chowing down.
Her cheeks were all puffed up with food.
She didn't even notice when some food got stuck on her face.
Munching away, she mumbled, "Man, I almost ran late this morning and skipped breakfast. I'm starving!"
Charles couldn't help but smile watching her.
Hannah, still stuffing her face, blinked at him, "What's up? Why you grinning?"
Charles pointed to her face, hinting she had something on it.
Hannah followed his gesture and touched the food residue.
Any other girl might've been embarrassed.
But she just laughed, "Oops, my bad. The food's just too good, didn't even notice."
Charles's smile grew, and his gaze softened.
Seeing him staring, Hannah urged, "C'mon, dig in! The chef here is awesome. I'm coming here every day from now on."
Seeing her enjoy the food so much, Charles suddenly felt super hungry and started eating too.
They were so into each other.
They had no clue people around them were already recording the scene and posting it in a private chat group.
In just half a day, Hannah became the talk of the company.
[Who's this chick? She's having lunch with Charles.]
[Yeah! Charles never eats in the employee cafeteria. He actually showed up today. Is it 'cause of her?]
[Look at Charles's gaze! So gentle! He's never looked at anyone like that.]
[You guys don't get it. Last time I delivered documents to Charles, he was scarier than my dad. I always thought he was super stern. Didn't expect him to smile.]
[Charles is always like that! Even with Wyatt, he's all serious. Thought he couldn't smile.]
[Got some insider scoop.]
[Spill it!]
[Heard this girl's name is Hannah White, an intern in the PR department. Folks there gave her a hard time, thinking she got in through connections. But Charles showed up and promoted her to executive assistant this morning. Then he brought her to lunch. Shows how important she is to him.]
[So the PR department's in trouble, huh?]
[First time seeing Charles protect someone like this. PR department's doomed! Bet Charles will retaliate.]
[Got a question. If she's Charles's girl, will we get promotions and raises if we get on her good side?]
[Should we give it a shot?]
Because of Hannah, the chat group was buzzing.
Meanwhile, Hannah and Charles were totally clueless about it.
