Chapter 940 Hannah and Charles Argue

Charles cut off Hannah and Stella just as they were about to flag down a cab.

Hannah wasn’t having any of it. She yanked open the car door, ready to bounce.

Charles grabbed her wrist, muttered an apology to the cabbie, and slammed the door shut.

"Hannah, just hear me out," he pleaded, sounding desperate.

"I don’t wanna hear it. I saw what I saw, and I heard what I heard." Hannah tried to yank her hand free, but Charles had a grip like a steel trap. "Let go of me!"

Right now, she couldn’t stand the sight of him.

Thinking about what she’d just witnessed made her chest feel like it was being squeezed by a boa constrictor. If it kept up, she’d suffocate.

Stella, fuming on Hannah’s behalf, jumped in, "Charles, you’ve really crossed the line this time! I get that Violet’s your ex, but what about Hannah?"

Stella was still reeling from what she’d seen.

They’d just gotten back to their dorm.

Stella had promised Charles she’d look out for Hannah and make sure she didn’t do anything rash. But they’d waited and waited, and Charles never showed.

Hannah was losing it.

She called Wyatt and found out Charles had booked a room for Carter and his family at a hotel.

Hearing that, Hannah got even more worked up.

Even though she trusted Charles, she couldn’t shake the panic.

After wrestling with herself, she decided to go see for herself.

Stella, worried sick, tagged along.

She was scared Charles might actually hurt Hannah, so she wanted to call and warn him.

But before she could even dial, they saw it.

Charles had promised he’d always be there for Violet.

Hearing that, both Hannah and Stella were livid!

Stella knew all about Charles and Violet’s history and how he’d felt guilty for years because of her.

But this was too much!

Hannah was his girlfriend now!

How could he do this?

Charles knew he’d messed up, but with Lassie begging him, he couldn’t just say no.

"You’ve got it all wrong!" Charles tried to explain. "Violet’s got severe nervous breakdowns. She freaked out, and Carter and Lassie wanted to take her to the hospital, but she refused and caused a scene. Lassie had no choice but to ask for my help."

Hannah looked at him, crushed. "So you think you’re some kind of hero? Her parents can’t calm her down, but you can?"

Charles was at his wit’s end. "It’s not like that! Violet only remembers me! When Carter and Lassie found her, she had amnesia! She didn’t remember anyone! After some treatment, she only remembered me! That’s why Lassie asked for my help."

Or rather, Violet only remembered bits and pieces. But those fragments just made her more upset.

The agony of wanting to remember but not being able to was something they couldn’t understand.

After hearing his explanation, Hannah’s face went even paler. She felt dizzy, her legs turned to jelly, and she almost collapsed. "She only remembers you?"

'Violet only remembers Charles. What does that mean? It means Charles is now her only one. In Violet’s mind, he’s irreplaceable. And what about Charles? Is it the same for him?' Hannah thought.

Thinking it might be true, Hannah felt a lump in her throat, tears welling up and blurring her vision. "What about you? Violet was your first love. You only got with me because I look like her. Now that she's back, should I just break up with you?"

Charles felt a rare flash of anger. "Who told you you're a stand-in for Violet? From the start, I've kept you and Violet separate. I like you for you, and it has nothing to do with her."

He hated that she was questioning his feelings.

Over the years, he'd met women who looked more like Violet than Hannah.

If he wanted a stand-in, he would've found one long ago, not waited until now.

Hannah wasn’t buying it. "Then why me?"

She thought, 'If I'm not a stand-in, why didn’t he tell me from the start that I look like Violet? He's clearly feeling guilty.'

Charles was thrown. "What do you mean?"

Hannah stubbornly held back her tears. "If it's not because I look like Violet, then why are you with me? So many amazing women like you. Why me?"

Looking back, what she once thought was true love now seemed like a joke.

Charles didn’t love her.

He did all this just because she looked like Violet.

Charles was losing it.

He knew women could be unreasonable when they were upset, but this was next level.

"You ask why I'm with you! It's because I like you and I love you! Over the years, you're the only woman I've liked besides Violet."

"Then why do you like me? I'm not pretty. I'm average in every way, and my family background isn't great. In every aspect, I'm not good enough for you!" Hannah pressed on.

Charles gripped her shoulders tightly. "Liking someone doesn’t need a reason. Liking is just liking, regardless of looks or background! It's about mutual attraction, mutual care, and mutual joy."

He always thought love was simple.

Liking was liking, and loving was loving, without reasons or weighing pros and cons.

Hannah's eyes were full of sarcasm.

How poetic!

If she hadn’t seen Violet hugging him and heard what he said, she might’ve believed it. But she saw and heard it.

Hannah said coldly, "Choose between me and her! If you choose, I'll believe you!"

Even though she knew she was being unreasonable and irrational, she didn’t want to be a stand-in or caught in a love triangle.

When she realized she loved Charles, she broke off her engagement with Austin without hesitation for this reason.

Love should be pure.

Charles almost didn’t hesitate. "Give me some time. Let me explain it to her!"

Hannah's heart sank. "I can give you time, but tell me, how long? A month? Six months? A year? Or five years, ten years?"

Charles' throat tightened. "I don't know! I have to see Violet's condition!"

He didn’t even know her condition, how could he estimate the time?

At this moment, Hannah was completely crushed. She took a deep breath, forcing back her tears. Just then, a cab stopped at her feet, and as the passenger got out, she jumped in and slammed the door shut.

The cab sped away.
