Chapter 764 Begging for Love
On the way to the airport, the car was dead silent. No one said a word.
Carol, probably worn out from crying, leaned against the seat, staring blankly ahead.
Patricia felt a heavy sadness but didn't know what to say, so she kept quiet too.
Martin was always the silent type.
Hunter hadn't spoken since they left the Hill family.
After a while, Maximilian couldn't take the tension anymore and broke the silence, "Patricia, call me when you get home, okay? Let me know you're safe."
"Alright," Patricia replied, barely paying attention.
Maximilian's attempt to lighten the mood only made things more awkward.
He cleared his throat and tried again, "How's Kaleb doing? He always talks about his grandkids. Now that he's seen them, he must be thrilled!"
At the mention of her kids, Patricia's eyes lit up a bit.
"Yeah, he loves the kids, especially Fannie. They had a great time together," she said.
Maximilian chuckled, "Kaleb's always had a soft spot for girls. Before he found you, he used to say if aunt had given him a daughter, she'd be as beautiful as aunt."
The "aunt" was Patricia's mom, Elise. He'd called her that since he was a kid.
Patricia laughed, "No wonder he's so good to Fannie and Maria. He definitely favors girls."
Maximilian teased, "You better watch out, or he'll spoil them rotten."
Patricia nodded, "Especially Fannie. Martin already spoils her. We can't let Kaleb spoil her too, or who knows what she'll do."
Maximilian laughed, easing the tension in the car.
Before they knew it, they were at the airport.
Carol and Maximilian walked them to the boarding gate. Before they went in, Maximilian patted Patricia on the shoulder, "Take care of yourself. Christmas is coming, and the company's busy. Once the holidays start, I'll come to Sunset Bay to see you all. Don't mind me."
Patricia smiled, "I won't! Are you spending Christmas with us? Kaleb will be thrilled. Moreover, you're all alone here, so it's perfect."
Maximilian nodded, "I'll definitely come!"
Patricia said, "Great! We'll be waiting for you!"
She then looked at Carol with concern, "Maximilian, take good care of Carol. Her family's been through a lot, and I'm really worried about her."
Maximilian promised, "I will, don't worry!"
"Alright!" Patricia nodded, feeling relieved.
The boarding announcement sounded. It was time to go. Patricia waved to Maximilian and Carol, "Carol, thank you so much! If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have been able to rescue him so smoothly."
After Billy's death, Carol had helped them a lot. Without her, Patricia wouldn't have escaped safely, and Hunter wouldn't have been rescued unharmed.
Carol's eyes, already red and swollen, filled with tears again, "You don't need to thank me. I was just telling the truth! Take care, and message me when you arrive!"
This time, Carol really felt like it was goodbye for good. Her heart was heavy with reluctance.
Patricia said, "Alright! Come visit me in Sunset Bay when you get a chance. Once things settle down, I'll come see you too."
With tears in her eyes, Carol nodded, "I will! I'll definitely come see you when I get the chance."
The airport announcement urged them again.
Though Patricia and Martin were reluctant, they left with Hunter.
Maximilian and Carol watched them disappear before reluctantly turning to leave the airport.
Seeing her leave, Maximilian immediately followed.
Carol didn't head to the parking lot but walked towards the taxi stand.
Maximilian quickly caught up, grabbing her wrist, "Carol, where are you going?"
Without turning, Carol replied, "I'm taking a taxi."
Maximilian insisted, "I'll drive you home!"
Carol shook her head, "No need, I'll take a taxi."
Maximilian couldn't help but remember Carol's words about finding a husband willing to join their family. His heart tightened. He turned her around, his deep eyes fixed on her face, "Why won't you let me drive you?"
Carol looked up at him, her eyes filled with uncontrollable affection, "Do you like me?"
Maximilian didn't know how to answer. He thought for a long time but couldn't find the right words.
He used to be sure he only saw her as a sister. But now... Did he still see her only as a sister?
Seeing his silence, Carol's emotions flared. She shook off his hand, "You know I like you, so why don't you keep your distance? If you don't like me, why are you so good to me? Do you know how much it hurts? I want to forget you, to stop liking you, but you keep showing up. I hate myself for being so weak, for not being able to forget you, for still liking you!"
After venting, Carol quickly calmed down. She took a deep breath and made up her mind, "We shouldn't see each other anymore!"
Maximilian felt a bit panicked, "Why?"
Holding back her tears, Carol said, "Because I don't want to like you anymore! Only if you completely disappear from my sight can I forget you."
Time can slowly make everything fade away. She was determined to do it. She had to!
Hearing her say she wanted to forget him and stop liking him, a wave of unprecedented panic surged in Maximilian's heart. Without thinking, he blurted out, "Carol, let's get married! Let me take care of you."
He was shocked by his own words. Even he didn't know why he suddenly proposed.
Carol gave a self-mocking smile, staring into his eyes, "Do you like me?"
Maximilian promised, "I will like you someday."
Carol suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of irony. Nineteen years had passed without him liking her. It was impossible for him to start now. Though she loved him, she didn't want his charity. She didn't want to beg for love.
"Maximilian, let me go! I will forget you, I will definitely do it." Carol replied firmly.
As she finished speaking, a taxi happened to stop. As soon as the passenger got out, she quickly got in, closed the door, and gave the driver the address.
The taxi sped away.
Maximilian's heart was taken away at that moment. He rushed to the parking lot to get his car, but by the time he tried to catch up, the taxi was already out of sight.
