Chapter 79 Charles Encounters Human Traffickers.
Debbie looked at Greta, who stood there unsure, in disbelief. She forced a smile and asked, "Greta, how did you come here?"
Greta stepped out of the shadows, staring at Debbie with a gloomy expression, her body trembling with anger.
As best friends for more than a decade, just one expression was enough for Debbie to know that Greta must have heard the entire conversation between her and Patricia earlier.
"Greta, you misunderstood. Patricia..." Debbie's words were cut short as Greta rushed over, gripping her arms tightly and angrily asking.
"Debbie, is what she said true?"
Debbie's arms were hurting from Greta's grip, and her face twisted in pain.
"Greta, after our friendship of over ten years, do you really believe her and not me?" Debbie defended.
Greta's emotions remained stirred up as she spoke.
"I heard Patricia say with my own ears that my brother's condition is not suitable for surgery and should be treated conservatively. Surgery would be very dangerous in his situation."
Debbie broke free from Greta’s grasp, smiling and trying to calm her down. Debbie said confidently.
"Regardless of the surgery, there is always a risk involved. Whether it can be successful depends on the surgeon. If Patricia can't do it, does that mean I can't either?"
"Really? Can you really do it?" Greta looked at her skeptically, still having doubts.
Debbie assured her confidently.
"Of course, it's true. When have I ever lied to you? If I promise success, then I will definitely succeed. Besides, coronary artery surgery has long been a routine procedure, nothing will go wrong."
Having known each other for over a decade, Greta had witnessed Debbie's efforts and abilities throughout the years, so she naturally had confidence in her.
Her emotions gradually calmed down after Debbies reassurance.
Seeing Greta being convinced by Debbie, Patricia hurriedly interjected.
"Miss Thomas, things are not as Debbie described! Although coronary artery surgery has a high success rate and has been approved, Bobby's condition is unique.” Patrica defended.
“The diameter of his distal coronary artery is less than 1mm, making him unsuitable for surgery, otherwise, it will be life-threatening. Moreover, this disease is more common in middle-aged men and people over the age of 40.” Patrica continued to reason.
“Your brother is suffering from this disease at the tender the age of six years old, which is already a special case that requires extra caution."
Afraid that Greta would be swayed by Patricia's words, Debbie pushed her aside and defended loudly, leaving no doubt of her abilities in Greta’s mind.
"Patricia, how despicable you are. Just because you couldn't achieve it, you think I can't either?"
Debbie turned directly to Greta, looking her directly in the eyes she said.
"Greta, don't listen to her persuasion. Just like your grandmother said, foreign diplomas can be fake. Who knows if her certificates and resumes are genuine? I have performed many coronary artery surgeries.”
Debbie lowered her voice and pleaded with Greta. “Please trust me, I will definitely return your brother to you healthy and well."
"Miss Thomas..." Patricia didn't want to give up and tried to continue persuading.
However, Greta impatiently interrupted her, "I've known Debbie for over ten years, I understand her. Since she says she can do it, I believe her."
"Definitely achievable, there's no need for you to sow discord between us anymore. I won't fall for it." Debbie said.
Patricia was so enraged that she almost spewed blood. Seeing Greta's stubbornness on the matter, she couldn't be bothered to play the villain anymore.
"I've said everything I needed to say. Since you insist on going against me, I have no other choice!" After finishing her words, she looked at Debbie and sternly warned.
"Debbie, remember that a doctor's duty is to save lives, not to use manipulative tactics as leverage. Take care of yourself!"
With that, she glanced at them one last time and turned to leave the hallway.
As she watched Patricia leave, a trace of satisfaction flashed in Debbie's eyes.
Greta still had some worries, so she asked Debbie again.
"Debbie, Bobby will be safe, right? He's my only younger brother. I trusted you and that's why I had grandma send him here. Nothing can happen to him."
Debbie nodded, "I swear to you, Bobby will be safe, the surgery will be successful. And if anything does go wrong, I'll offer my own life for Bobby's. Do you believe me now?"
Hearing her say that Greta finally let go of all her concerns.
After leaving the hallway, Greta went to visit Bobby in the ward, while Debbie went on rounds. In the corridor, she encountered Patricia who was about to do the same. Debbie's mouth curled into a cold smile as she warned menacingly.
"I'm warning you, don't interfere anymore, or I won't be polite to you."
Patricia refused to back down, "To achieve your goals, you even used your closest friend. Debbie, once again you have surprised me with your actions."
Unhappy with Patricia's words, Debbie sneered, "When did I use her?"
Patricia retorted, "You've performed numerous coronary bypass surgeries and have abundant experience, but a case like Bobby's, I'm sure you haven't encountered before."
Without Greta by her side, Debbie admitted openly, "I haven't encountered it or done it before! But I believe in my own abilities, I am fully capable."
"Heh..." Patricia couldn't help but laugh at her blind confidence.
"I see you can talk the talk, but I hope you can also walk the walk and not cause any medical accidents that the hospital will have to clean up!”
Patricia said in a sarcastic tone, “You know better than me the position of the Thomas family in Country Z. It won't be beneficial for you to offend them."
After saying that, not wanting to waste any more time with her, Patricia left directly.
Debbie snorted at her retreating figure.
"Rest assured, I will succeed in this surgery and turn things around. If you have the time, why not pay more attention to your own son?"
Patricia froze for a moment, vaguely sensing that something was off, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
Debbie looked smugly at her and then turned to enter the ward. Soon, Patricia and her son would completely disappear from her sight. Debbie comforted herself with this thought.
She would no longer have to live under their shadow.
...
It was five o'clock in the afternoon and time for the kindergarten dismissal.
The entrance of the kindergarten was packed with people. There were parents picking up their children, snack vendors, and teachers recruiting for extracurricular classes.
Jade was holding Charlie's hand, waiting outside the gate.
Charles and Fannie were ready to leave. Suddenly, three teachers wearing Victoria Drawing Studio hats blocked their path and handed Fannie a request, smiling they said.
"Children, get a free doll!" Fannie couldn't take her eyes off the doll in the teacher's arms.
With a stern face, Charles replied unhappily.
"Mommy said that good things don't just fall from the sky, don't believe them easily, it might be a scam."
One of the teachers in green clothes smiled and said.
"Child, we are not scammers! We are teachers from The Victoria Drawing Studio. You can call me Lily. Are you interested in painting? For a small fee of $99 you can attend four classes and get four lessons."
Charles took a step back cautiously, maintaining distance. One of the teachers approached Jade.
"Miss, it's really worth it for the children to attend four classes for $99. How about enrolling your two little darlings? I'll even gift you two additional lessons." The teacher offered.
Fannie was also approached by a teacher holding a doll.
"Child, do you like Barbie dolls? This doll can even talk! Look, there's a button at the back. It doesn't just mimic your speech but can also engage in a conversation with you!"
Excited, Fannie's eyes sparkled as she listened. "Really? Hurry, let me try opening it."
The teacher pressed the button, and Fannie immediately said, "Hello!"
The Barbie doll followed and said, "Hello!"
Fannie continued with astonishment, "My name is Fannie, what's your name?"
The Barbie doll replied, "My name is Katy."
Wide-eyed, Fannie exclaimed, "It can really converse!"
The teacher encouraged her to continue playing.
At the same time, the teacher who approached Charles also tried to persuade Jade, bombarding her with hypnotic brainwashing techniques to enroll her child.
Jade grew increasingly annoyed by their persistence, having already declined multiple times. They wouldn't let go, constantly pushing their sales pitch.
Unbeknownst to him, Charles had been pushed to the side. Fearful that these three teachers would approach him, he instinctively took two steps back, creating distance between them.
The surroundings were bustling with people. Suddenly, a pair of hands took advantage of the chaos, reaching from behind Charles and firmly covering his mouth and nose.
A pungent smell filled his nostrils, and he wasn’t able to struggle in time, then everything went black as he lost consciousness.
