Chapter 976 Unveiling Violet's True Identity

Carter shut his eyes tight, tears streaming down his face.

"How did Violet end up like this?" Carter muttered. "Why did she turn so cruel? Why would she hurt Shirley? Shirley's her own sister! Even if they were apart for seven years, she shouldn't do this."

Charles hesitated, then decided to spill the beans. "And that hot water incident at home? I think Violet did it on purpose."

Carter's eyes snapped open, confusion replacing his despair. He looked like he couldn't process anything.

"What did you say?" Carter asked.

Charles continued, "I saw a smug look in her eyes that day. I think she did it on purpose. But these are just my suspicions. Now, I'm pretty sure she's disliked Shirley for a long time."

Carter felt like his heart was being stomped on.

He clenched his fists, his whole body shaking with anger.

"Why?" he kept asking, over and over.

He couldn't wrap his head around why Violet would do this.

Shirley adored her, always stood up for her, yet Violet was plotting against her.

Charles said, "I know it's not my place to meddle in your family stuff, but Shirley's only five. If Violet did it once, she could do it again. If I don't tell you and you don't take precautions, next time we might not be so lucky."

Carter buried his face in his hands, feeling utterly defeated.

He got it, he really did.

But they were both his daughters.

What was he supposed to do?

Just dealing with this was enough to break him. He thought this was all Violet had done.

Then Charles dropped another bomb. "And her illness, I think she might be faking it too."

Carter was stunned. He slowly lowered his hands, his red eyes locking onto Charles.

"She's not sick?" Carter asked.

Charles said, "That's my guess! Someone who can do all these bad things can't have a nervous breakdown. People with nervous breakdowns don't act like this. The doctor said she has amnesia, is fragile, and can't be stressed. Do you think a fragile person can plan and do these things? My grandma committed suicide because of depression, and her early symptoms were a nervous breakdown. I'm not a doctor, but my mom is, and I've picked up a few things."

Carter had known Charles since he was a kid and trusted him completely.

"Then why do so many doctors say she's sick? And Angela, who treated her so many times, didn't notice anything?" Carter asked.

Charles smirked. "It's not hard to fake medical records. With enough money, anything's possible."

Carter was baffled. "Why would she fake an illness?"

Charles speculated, "If she's sick, you and Lassie would feel more guilty, pay more attention to her, and be more tolerant of her behavior, like threatening suicide."

Carter wasn't dumb; he got it right away. "So, she's faking her illness to manipulate us and do whatever she wants?"

Charles didn't want to be too sure, so he left some room for doubt. "These are just my guesses. We need to verify if it's true."

The string of revelations hit Carter hard, making him laugh bitterly.

As he laughed, tears streamed down his face. "The daughter I went through hell to find turned out to be like this."

His laughter was filled with sorrow and irony.

"How did she end up like this? Why? I know she went through a lot in those seven years, and it's my fault for not protecting her back then." Carter was so angry he pounded the armrests of his chair. "But that was on me, why hurt Shirley? Last time she burned Shirley, Lassie and I were heartbroken, but we couldn't bring ourselves to scold her. Instead of repenting, she got worse! They're sisters!"

Charles had said his piece and didn't add more.

After all, this was the Moore family's issue. He just needed to tell Carter the truth. It wasn't his place to interfere further.

Charles connected to the printer and printed out all the evidence of Violet's wrongdoings.

"I've done what I should. How you handle this is up to you," Charles said. "But before this is resolved, you can let Shirley stay with me. Our company is on break starting tomorrow, so I'll be free for a while."

Shirley liked Hannah, and Hannah liked Shirley too.

He could take Shirley to where Hannah worked, letting them bond more and paving the way for marrying Hannah.

Carter's mind was a mess, completely lost.

Usually, he could handle billion-dollar deals without breaking a sweat.

But today, he felt utterly helpless.

"Later, come back with me. I'll have Lassie pack Shirley's things, and you can take her directly," Carter agreed.

He didn't dare let Shirley stay with Violet for even a moment longer.

He was terrified Violet would hurt Shirley again.

The burn on the back of Shirley's neck still hadn't healed! When the blister broke, she was in so much pain, but she didn't cry out. He saw it all and felt it deeply.

If this happened again, it would break his heart.

Shirley was usually so obedient and sensible; he couldn't bear to say a harsh word to her, yet she kept getting hurt because of Violet.

How could he be at ease?

Charles agreed without hesitation.

Carter stayed at Charles' place a bit longer, trying to calm down, then sent a message to Lassie, asking her to pack Shirley's clothes and daily necessities.

On the way back, his face was grim, and he didn't say a word.

Charles' place was a bit far from Carter's, and with the snowy, slippery roads, it took a full half hour to get to Carter's house.

Carter was still entering the password when the door opened from the inside.

Violet appeared in front of them with a bright smile, her eyes curved like crescent moons, looking every bit like an innocent girl.
