Chapter 905 Eavesdropping?
Hannah's head snapped to the side, her cheek stinging and her lip split, blood trickling out.
She didn't dare hide or talk back. Just kept crying, feeling all kinds of wronged.
She never thought it would blow up like this.
She figured it was just a breakup.
Sure, Lisa and Quentin might be pissed, but not hospital-level pissed.
If she knew it would go down like this, she would've kept her mouth shut.
Seeing Hannah get smacked, Austin yanked her behind him, his brows knitting together, and said, "Hannah didn't know it would turn out like this! How could you hit her?"
Lisa was fuming and ready to lay into Hannah some more, but Austin's glare made her bite her tongue.
Austin turned back, cupped Hannah's face, trying to check her injury, but she pulled away.
He sighed, "I just wanna see if you're okay."
Hannah shook her head, "I'm fine!"
Then she brushed past him to the doctor and pleaded, "Doctor, please, you gotta save my dad. He's only in his forties, still so young."
The doctor reassured her, "Don't worry! He was brought in just in time and has been stabilized. He's not in immediate danger, but he needs to stay in the hospital. The fees might be higher because of his liver transplant."
Hannah asked, all anxious, "How much are we talking?"
Their family was already broke. A few years back, they blew all their savings on Quentin's liver transplant and racked up a ton of debt.
Every penny they made since then went to paying off debts or Oliver's education.
Lisa and Quentin never said it, but she knew they were strapped for cash.
Now the doc says Quentin's treatment will cost a fortune. What are they gonna do?
The doctor said, "I can't give you an exact number right now; it depends on the meds! Some are covered by insurance, some aren't."
Hannah's hands balled into fists, "Got it, thanks!"
"You're welcome!" The doctor said and left.
Soon, a nurse came over with a payment slip, "Who's Quentin's family?"
Hannah and Lisa stepped up, "We are!"
The nurse handed them the slip, "Here's Quentin's bill. Please go pay the fees."
"Thanks!" Hannah said, taking the slip.
Seeing the amount, she let out a small sigh of relief.
It wasn't as bad as she thought.
Good thing she saved some cash from her summer gig at IntelliMerge Technologies. Should be enough to cover it.
Lisa glanced at the slip and freaked out, "$6,000! That's insane for a first bill! It's not even for surgery."
Hannah said, "My summer job paid well, and I saved up. It's enough."
Lisa worried, "This time it's enough, but what about next time? Your dad's sick, and you'll have to take time off work, no paycheck then."
Hannah reassured her, "I'll figure it out! You stay here. Dad should be out soon. I'll go pay."
Lisa got mad, "This is all your fault. If it weren't for you, your dad wouldn't be in the hospital."
Hannah bit her lip and stayed quiet.
She always knew her mom favored her brother.
Even if she tried to hide it, it showed.
But she didn't care. Lisa and Quentin gave her life and raised her.
Biased or not, she owed them.
Austin sensed her mood, walked over, and took the slip.
Austin said, "I'll pay it! You and Lisa wait here for Quentin. I'll handle the bill."
Lisa's eyes lit up.
Right! How could she forget, she had a rich son-in-law! With Austin around, money shouldn't be an issue.
But Hannah didn't want to owe Austin more, so she took the slip back, "Our family already owes you a lot. I don't want to owe you more."
After saying that, she didn't give Austin a chance to argue and bolted off, head down.
Lisa was fuming, "Austin, don't be mad. I don't know when she got so stubborn! She's been so good and obedient all these years, and now suddenly she's like this."
She wanted to keep talking, but Austin shot her a look, and she clammed up.
Not long after, Quentin was wheeled out.
Austin pulled some strings to get him a VIP room and texted Hannah the room and bed number so she wouldn't get lost.
After paying the bill, Hannah rushed to the room.
Quentin was still out cold.
Hannah figured everyone must be starving since they hadn't had lunch, so she whipped out her phone and ordered food for everyone.
After eating, Hannah stayed by Quentin's side, worried he'd wake up and not see anyone there.
Lisa dozed off on a bench.
Austin sat quietly on a nearby sofa, refusing to leave no matter what Hannah said. He insisted on waiting for Quentin to wake up.
Time ticked by.
The room was super quiet.
Hannah, worn out both physically and mentally, dozed off by the bedside without realizing it.
Seeing her asleep, Austin got up and found a thin blanket to cover her.
Lisa whispered, "Is she asleep?"
Seeing Hannah was out, the gentleness on Austin's face vanished, replaced by a grim look, his brows furrowed, showing his true colors.
Not wanting to wake Hannah, he pointed outside, signaling Lisa to follow him.
Lisa nodded, got up, and followed Austin to the stairwell. Before she could steady herself, Austin suddenly turned, grabbed her by the neck, and pinned her against the wall.
Lisa's eyes widened in fear, her face showing pure terror, "Mr. Moore."
Austin's lips pressed into a tight line, he looked at her coldly, and through gritted teeth, he said, "Who gave you the right to hit her? How dare you hit her?"
Only God knew how furious he was when he saw Lisa hit Violet.
If he weren't afraid of arousing Violet's suspicion, he would've killed Lisa right then and there.
How dare she hit the woman he loved most.
His expression was terrifying, like a demon straight out of hell.
Lisa's body trembled in fear.
She immediately apologized, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I was too angry and lost control. I won't do it again!"
Austin's fingers tightened, pressing closer to Lisa.
Austin warned, "Don't think I don't know what you're up to! Do you think I don't know how you've treated her all these years? You have two faces. The only reason I haven't said anything is because I know she's not your biological daughter, and you hold a grudge! But this is your final warning! You agreed to this deal back then! I saved Quentin and found a liver donor for him, and you agreed to be her parents. I kept my promise, and you better keep yours! If I find out you're mistreating her again, I can save Quentin, and I can kill him. Taking his life would be as easy as squashing an ant. I mean what I say. If you don't believe me, try me."
Lisa felt a choking sensation in her throat. Her body trembled even more violently.
She could barely hear what he was saying, nodding repeatedly, "I will. We've always kept our promise and treated her like our own daughter all these years."
Austin still didn't let go, curling his lips into a fake smile as he looked at her.
Lisa immediately started flattering him, "Mr. Moore, don't worry. No matter what, I'll make sure Hannah stays with you! You're so outstanding and you love her so much. Who else could be worthy of her besides you?"
Her words hit the mark.
He slowly released his grip on her neck and took out a clean handkerchief from his pocket, wiping the hand that had touched Lisa.
Lisa clutched her neck, leaning against the wall, breathing heavily with lingering fear.
She was so old, yet she was afraid of someone just in their early twenties. It was really strange.
"Mr. Moore, Hannah listens to us the most, I..."
Before she could finish, the stairwell door suddenly opened, and there stood Hannah, who had just been sleeping, staring at them without blinking.
