Chapter 798: Violet is unreachable
Charles got off the plane at 2 a.m.
He didn't want to wake Violet, so he waited until 7 AM to call her. Her phone was off, "Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently switched off. Please try again later."
Charles shrugged it off. Violet often forgot to charge her phone. He sent her a WeChat message instead.
Charles: [I'm at school! Call me when your phone's charged.]
He pocketed his phone.
The first day, no response. He figured she was busy with classes.
The second day, still nothing. He sent another message.
Charles: [Still no charge? Hurry up and call me.]
No reply.
By the third day, Charles knew something was wrong. Violet never went three days without checking her phone or contacting him. They always managed a quick video call, no matter how busy.
Worried, he called her again. Still off. He then called Carter.
After a long ring, Carter answered.
"Carter!" Charles greeted.
"Hey, Charles! What's up?" Carter's voice was tired and hoarse.
"Mr. Moore, are you okay? You sound sick."
Carter laughed, "Just busy, haven't slept much. I'll be fine."
Charles believed him. He'd seen Carter work tirelessly before.
"Carter, where's Violet? I've been trying to reach her, but her phone's off and no replies."
Carter explained, "She's at school. They don't allow phones."
"At school? She never mentioned it."
"It's been in the works. Middle school is tough, and she was getting home late. We decided boarding would give her more rest. No phones allowed, school rules."
It made sense, but Charles still felt uneasy.
"How can I contact her? Do the dorms have phones?"
"No dorm phones. She gets a break once a month. I'll have her call you then."
Charles frowned, "Did she just finish her monthly break?"
"Yeah, she did," Carter replied.
"I see," Charles muttered, deep in thought. So, he could only contact Violet once a month?
Carter continued, "I know you miss her, but she's in her second year of middle school now. Exams are coming up, and she needs to work hard. The Moore family is wealthy, but she needs to manage the family assets. If she doesn't study, someone might take advantage of her. You understand, right?"
Charles couldn't argue with that. "Is Austin also boarding?"
"Yes, they're both at school, looking out for each other," Carter said.
"I understand," Charles replied, but he didn't hang up.
Carter waited, then asked, "What's wrong? Are you worried about Violet?"
Charles forced a smile, "Yeah, it's her first time boarding. I'm worried she won't adapt well."
Carter reassured him, "She's almost fourteen. She needs to learn independence. We can't always be there for her. If we were to leave, she should be able to take care of herself."
Charles nodded, "I know you're doing this for her own good."
Seeing Charles didn't suspect anything, Carter sighed in relief, "Focus on your studies and come back soon. We're all waiting for you."
"Alright. If Violet gets a break, have her call me," Charles said.
"Sure! Don't overthink it; focus on your studies," Carter reminded him.
After the call, Charles still felt uneasy but didn't dwell on it. He put his phone away and went to the lab.
For the next month, he counted the days. Running between the lab, school, and the company kept him busy, making time fly.
A month passed, and Charles waited for Violet's call. But she didn't call. On the last day of her break, he called her himself. Her phone was still off.
A wave of unease hit him. A month with no contact was unprecedented. Violet would have found a way to message him, no matter how busy she was.
Charles called Carter again. Carter's voice sounded even more exhausted.
"Charles, what's wrong?" Carter asked, then quickly added, "Are you looking for Violet? She didn't do well on her exams and stayed at school for extra classes. She didn't come home."
Charles was silent. Carter continued, "I've been so busy, I forgot to tell her you were looking for her. Next break, I'll make sure she calls you."
Charles wasn't foolish. After a month of no contact, he couldn't just believe Carter's words. He had trusted him because he was Violet's father, but now he had doubts.
"Carter, what really happened? Did something happen to Violet?"
