Chapter 999 Strange

Charles felt a sharp pang in his chest and quickly tried to comfort Hannah. "Hey, it's all behind us now. Those jerks got what they deserved! I promise, nothing like that will ever happen again."

Stella chimed in, "Yeah, Charles had Violet committed to a mental hospital. She won't be able to hurt you anymore."

Shirley whispered, "Hannah, I'm so sorry for what Violet did. I won't support her anymore. She hurt you, and I can't forgive that. Don't be sad, I'll always be here for you."

Tears streamed down Hannah's cheeks.

She forced a smile through her pain, "I'm starving!"

Charles jumped in, "Let me help you up!"

He gently helped her sit up, propping a pillow behind her so she could lean back comfortably.

As soon as Hannah was settled, Stella brought over some soup. "Hannah, the soup's a bit hot. Let me feed you..."

But before she could finish, Charles had already taken the bowl from her.

Stella was momentarily stunned, and before she could react, Charles had scooped a spoonful, blew on it to cool it down, and gently fed it to Hannah.

Hannah instinctively looked at Shirley.

Seeing Shirley's wide, expectant eyes, Hannah blushed and reached out to take the bowl herself.

But Charles wouldn't let go. "I'll feed you! Your hands are injured, so you need to rest."

Hannah stopped insisting and obediently opened her mouth to drink the soup Charles fed her.

Because her cheeks hurt so much, she could only open her mouth a tiny bit.

It took a long time to finish the bowl of soup.

Afterward, Charles fed her another bowl of porridge.

Once she was full, Hannah felt a bit more energetic and softly asked, "You said you avenged me earlier. What did you do to them?"

Charles didn't want Hannah to know the details of his methods, fearing it would affect her impression of him, so he succinctly said, "An eye for an eye. Those who hit you were all hit back. Those who insulted you were given a few slaps as a minor punishment."

After a pause, he continued, "As for Violet, she likes to pretend to be crazy, right? So I had Wyatt send her to a mental hospital for treatment. She won't be allowed out until she's cured."

Fearing Hannah might misunderstand, he explained, "She's Carter's daughter. Carter almost lost his life for my mother back in the day. So I can't be too harsh on her. This is the best way to handle it. You don't think the punishment is too light, do you?"

Hannah understood his good intentions and shook her head, "No! This punishment is enough!"

A normal person confined in a mental institution.

This punishment wasn't light.

In such an environment, even a sane person could be driven mad.

Stella asked with concern, "Hannah, how are you feeling now? Is there anywhere that still hurts?"

Hannah shook her head and spoke very slowly because of the pain in her face, "I'm okay."

Although she had suffered many injuries, none of them were too serious.

Since Hannah was a patient, Charles didn't let Stella stay long. After confirming that Hannah was okay, he had her leave and sent Shirley back to Carter.

With Violet not at home, no one would harm Shirley anymore, and it was safe to stay at home.

Although Stella and Shirley were reluctant to leave, they eventually did so to let Hannah rest properly.

The room was now just Hannah and Charles.

Hannah moved her lips and softly called out, "Darling."

Charles felt a shiver run through him. Hearing her call him that again was like music to his ears.

He couldn't help but smile. "What's up?"

Hannah reached up to touch her face. "Am I gonna be disfigured?"

She remembered the cut on her forehead.

Charles quickly reassured her, "No way, the doctor said it'll mostly heal in about a week!"

Hearing this, Hannah finally felt relieved.

Charles gently asked, "Does your face hurt a lot?"

Hannah nodded. "Yeah, it hurts."

Charles said with concern, "Hang on. I'll get an ice pack for you. It'll help with the swelling."

Hannah obediently nodded.

Charles got up and left. Shortly after, he returned with an ice pack, thoughtfully wrapped in a towel, and placed it on the more swollen side of Hannah's face.

Worried that it might be too cold for her, Charles alternated the ice pack between both sides of her face.

Halfway through, there was a knock on the door.

"Come in!"

As Charles's voice fell, the door opened, and Wyatt walked in. Seeing that Hannah was awake, he leaned down and whispered in Charles's ear, "Austin went to the mental institution to see Violet."

Charles's eyebrows twitched slightly.

Hannah knew they had something to discuss and considerately said, "I can do it myself. You can go take care of your business."

Charles asked worriedly, "Are you sure you can manage?"

Hannah replied, "It's fine! It's just my face that's injured, not my hands."

Although her arms had multiple soft tissue injuries, bruised and battered, they weren't so bad that she couldn't take care of herself.

Holding an ice pack to her face was still manageable.

Charles thought for a moment and then nodded. "Alright! I'll step out with Wyatt for a bit. We'll be just outside in the hallway. If you need anything, text me, and I'll come right in! I'll leave your phone on the bedside table for you."

Hannah obediently nodded. "Okay!"

After making sure she was alright, Charles got up and left with Wyatt.

The two sat on a bench in the hallway outside the room. Wyatt opened his laptop and accessed the surveillance footage from the mental institution with a few quick keystrokes.

The video was a playback and showed the time when Austin went to see Violet.

"Let me out! I need to get out! I can't stay here; I'll go crazy. There's nothing here, and I have to do everything in this room. It's worse than prison! Let me out. You're here to take me away, right?"

"Open the door!"

"Please plead with my parents for me. I really know I was wrong! Austin, I'm your sister. You can't just leave me here!"

"Why did you go after Shirley?"

"I really was wrong. I'll never do it again. I'm sorry."

"You should be grateful that nothing happened to Hannah. Otherwise, you wouldn't be here today but be at the crematorium."

"Take care of yourself."

After watching the video, Charles frowned deeply.

Wyatt said, "There's nothing particularly wrong with the video. But something feels off, so I brought it to you."

Charles remained silent and thought, 'Indeed. Every word Austin said is reasonable. If anything, it seems like he's just venting his anger on Violet for Hannah's sake. But he didn't actually do anything to Violet. Does he really go there just to warn her? He seems a bit too idle. It's indeed strange. But for now, I can't pinpoint exactly what's off.'
