Chapter 641 Tell him the truth
"When Kaleb entered the study, Joe was standing with his hands behind his back, facing the bookshelf, seemingly lost in thought.
Hearing a noise behind him, Joe turned around and pointed to a spot on the desk, asking, ""Where is Margaret's photo?""
For many years, a photo of Kaleb and Margaret had always been displayed on Kaleb's desk.
Every time he entered the study, he could see it.
But this time, it was missing.
Kaleb chuckled. ""I put it away! That's the only photo I have with Patricia, our last memory together. It's been out for so long, I was afraid it would get damaged. When I miss her, I won't even have a picture to look at.""
Joe asked with a meaningful look, ""It's not just because of that, is it?""
Kaleb laughed. ""You truly understand me after decades of being brothers! Now that I've found my daughter, I have a new focus and attachment in my heart. In the past, I could only get through the days by looking at Patricia's photo. But now, things are different. I live each day fulfilled. I have my daughter and son-in-law by my side, and I feel content. Patricia is tucked away deep in my heart. If she's watching from above, she would want me to invest all my emotions in our children.""
Seeing Joe's happy and hopeful expression, Kaleb sensed the gravity of the situation and his own expression turned serious.
""Joe, why did you come to see me today?"" Kaleb asked.
Joe felt tongue-tied, unsure of where to start or whether he should reveal the truth.
Yesterday, he was determined to tell Kaleb the truth. Now, he was hesitating.
He, who was usually decisive and resolute, was now facing indecision for the first time.
The more Joe hesitated, the more Kaleb sensed the seriousness of the situation.
Inviting Joe to sit down, Kaleb took a seat opposite him, his face stern as he asked, ""Joe, what is it? You've never been like this before.""
Joe struggled to find the words, uncertain about how to broach the subject or whether he should reveal the truth.
Kaleb guessed, ""Is this about Maximilian?""
Joe immediately denied, ""How could it be! Although he's just your nephew, your bond with him is strong. Why would he deceive you?""
Kaleb smiled. ""That's right! The most important people in my life are Maximilian and Patricia. As long as they don't deceive me, the rest doesn't matter to me.""
Joe's expression became complicated.
Kaleb instantly realized something . ""You're not talking about my daughter, are you?""
Joe stiffened and nodded.
But Kaleb remained unfazed. ""She is my daughter. We were separated for over twenty years, so it's normal for her to keep things from me. I believe that with time, she will gradually reveal everything to me.""
Joe said hesitantly , ""It's not about that.""
Kaleb was incredulous. ""Not about that? Then what could it be? It can't be that she's not my biological daughter!""
Except for that, he didn't care about any other lies. Because Patricia was his daughter. He could accept everything about her.
Unexpectedly, the words slipped out of his mouth, and Joe's expression instantly turned grave.
The air seemed heavy and oppressive.
Kaleb suddenly realized something, stared at Joe's face for a while, said nothing, and headed towards the door.
""If knowing the truth will hurt me, then don't tell me,"" he said.
Joe caught up, grabbing his arm. ""Although it's cruel to you, I'm afraid you'll be hurt. If we wait until that day, it will be irreparable.""
Kaleb asserted, ""I believe that day will never come.""
Joe pressed, ""Why are you so sure?""
Kaleb confidently replied, ""I trust her. She is kind and wouldn't harm me!""
Joe immediately understood that Kaleb had already figured it out. Stepping forward, he stood in Kaleb's way. ""How do you know she won't hurt you?""
Kaleb didn't directly answer, only saying, ""You must be mistaken.""
Joe insisted, ""I'm not mistaken.""
Kaleb suggested, ""Let's do a paternity test. She was brought back by Maximilian himself! Are you trying to tell me that Maximilian is deceiving me? Or that the paternity test was wrong?""
Joe felt his mind in turmoil.
""What's really going on, I don't know! But she's definitely not your biological daughter!"" Joe said.
Kaleb continued to struggle. ""How could she not be? She looks so much like Patricia, and there was a paternity test conducted by Maximilian himself. Tell me, how could it be wrong? How could it be a mistake?""
Seeing his disbelief, Joe blurted out in desperation, ""There are so many people who look alike in the world. What's so strange about her resembling Margaret? Who told you that Margaret gave birth to a girl? She actually gave birth to a boy.""
As the words sank in, Kaleb immediately grasped the truth, grabbing Joe tightly. ""What are you saying? Are you saying Margaret gave birth to a boy?""
Realizing he had accidentally revealed the truth, Joe decided to come clean. ""Yes, Margaret did give birth to a boy. Think about it, Margaret and Patricia? Why do they not only look alike but also have similar names? I can't say this was a long-planned deception, but I feel like things are not as simple as they seem. If Patricia truly treats you as her biological father, I will pretend not to know about this, and I will never tell you. I fear you won't be able to handle the shock if she's just using you and will discard you once she's done using you. By then, it will be too late to mend things."""
