Chapter 148 Charles Reveals the Truth to Martin
Charles pursed his lips, looking at her as if she were a fool.
"If I couldn't notice something was off with you today, given my IQ of 180, I'd be underselling myself!" he said.
Patricia: "…? Was it that obvious?"
Just then, there was a 'ding,' and the elevator doors opened.
Mother and son hand in hand, stepped inside.
Charles continued earnestly, "I didn't notice last night, but this morning, I saw that something was wrong with you! At first, I thought you were just tired, hadn't rested well. I didn't pay much attention to it. But when you said you were giving me back to Daddy, I realized the situation was far more serious than I had thought."
Patricia rolled her eyes at him, "And you cried so sadly? To an outsider, it might seem as though you had lost your parents!"
"…??" Charles replied helplessly, "Would anyone really curse themselves like that?"
Patricia: "…??"
That comparison really didn't seem quite appropriate.
Charles went on, "I was truly sad, not overthinking it, just feeling like you really didn't love me, you didn't want me anymore! Though I'm highly intelligent, I am still just more than a four-year-old child. Suddenly, Mommy doesn't want me, and I'm not allowed to feel sad?"
A profound sense of guilt washed over Patricia.
To make such a smart child lose the ability to think and cry so hard, it must have been heartbreaking.
And it was all caused by her.
The elevator continued its ascent.
Reaching the right floor, there was a 'ding,' and the doors opened.
Mother and child, hand in hand, arrived at the door; Patricia unlocked it with her fingerprint.
The door opened.
Fannie sat on the sofa with her little head drooping, her eyes heavy as if filled with lead, wanting to close yet not closing, her eyelids drooping, resembling a dozing old lady, incredibly cute.
Hearing the door, she forced her eyes open, her gaze sweeping the entrance.
Fannie paused for a moment as her gaze, just shifted away, snapped back to the doorway; her eyes widened in shock, the drowsy look disappearing instantly. She leaped off the sofa, sprinted to Charles, and flung her arms around him, her shoulders shaking.
"Charles, you're finally back, I thought I might never see you again! I've missed you so much!"
Charles gently patted her back in a soothing manner.
"Don't worry, how could I ever bear to leave you? When you grow up, I want to be there to see you get married!"
Despite his words, Fannie still felt a lingering sense of fright.
"Then you must promise me, never to run away from home again! We were all so worried about you."
Charles glanced at Patricia with a weighty gaze.
"If someone hadn't driven me away, why would I have left?"
Patricia silently hid in a corner, not daring to make a sound.
It was her own foolish mistake, after all!
Realizing this, Fannie let go of Charles and puffed out her cheeks, glaring at Patricia with a fierce warning: "Mommy, if you ever drive brother away again, I'm not going to pay attention to you."
Patricia quickly surrendered with both hands raised: "Alright, alright, I promise, nothing like this will happen again!"
Only then did Fannie let her off the hook.
After closing the door and going back inside, Patricia immediately called Jade and Martin to reassure them.
After hanging up, she couldn't help but ask, "You didn't finish what you were saying! How did you find out about Samuel's threat?"
Charles gave a secretive smile: "I had tracked your movements, of course."
Ever since the last kidnapping incident, he was afraid it might happen again, so he secretly installed a tracking device in mommy's phone.
Unexpectedly, it proved useful this time.
"To track you, I hacked into the surveillance system in the room where you met Samuel and saw your meeting with Samuel. I also overheard your conversation."
Patricia got goosebumps, feeling a shiver down her spine.
"Why do I feel so creeped out? It's like I have no privacy at all in front of you!"
This son of hers was truly terrifying.
Charles took her reaction as a compliment, tilting his chin up proudly and warning her, "That's to tell you, don't try to hide things from me. With your level of smarts, you'll still need me to solve them."
Patricia: "……??"
Feeling guilty, she stood silently aside, not daring to even breathe too loudly.
After Patricia's call, Jade and Martin raced back at the first opportunity, frantically checking Charles over to make sure he was alright, finally breathing a sigh of relief.
Thinking of what he had done, Jade couldn't help but spank him lightly twice.
"You little rascal, do you have any idea how close you were to giving me a heart attack... While looking for you, I thought, if I couldn’t find you, I would break off with your mother and never pay attention to her again."
Charles knew she was genuinely concerned for him and hadn't really spanked him with force. His heart ached as he wiped away her tears, coaxing her with a smile: "Jade, don't cry. How could someone as beautiful as you cry? It won’t look good if you cry!"
"Really?" Jade, who always prized beauty, was successfully shielded and hurriedly wiped away her tears from the screen.
Martin sat on the couch with a stern face, his bottomless eyes instantly filling with anger, "You have one minute to explain yourself, choose your words wisely."
Charles knew that what he did today was excessive, but he didn't regret it at all.
"If I hadn't done this, Mom wouldn't learn her lesson. She might drive me away again next time for some other reason. I had to make her realize her mistake."
Martin's voice was grave: "What about me? Didn't you consider that I would worry?"
Charles looked up to meet Martin's imposing gaze, calm and resolute, "Some sacrifice is inevitable for authenticity!"
"So, your sorrow today was fake? You planned it all from the beginning?"
Charles stated bluntly, "The sorrow was real! But going to the hospital was deliberate, as were the words I told Randy, and appearing under the surveillance on Cambridge Road. Not answering Mom's calls and later turning off the phone was also intentional. We haven't been in Ivara City for long, and I knew Mom would definitely go to Randy’s place to look for me. If I didn't use Randy to scare her, how would she admit her mistake and beg me to come home?"
Everyone was stunned.
They couldn't believe that a child just over four years old could have such a meticulous plan.
He had played everyone with ease.
With such intelligence at four, what would he be capable of when he grew up?
He was a devil!
Martin listened until his handsome face went dark, his fingers and temples twitching. He stared at him with icy eyes.
Charles felt a shiver at the base of his heart, yet he was not afraid, directly facing Martin's rage.
Martin stared unblinkingly at him, then suddenly—laughed.
Jade: "...??"
Fannie: "...??"
Patricia: "...??"
Charles: "...??"
Under their surprised gazes, Martin extended his hand, patting Charles's shoulder approvingly: "Not bad, truly worthy of being my son. You are the only one who dares to look me in the eye when I’m angry."
He was genuinely happy to have such an outstanding son.
Charles looked at him emotionlessly and said coldly, "I think instead of being happy here, Daddy should focus on resolving the current issue."
Martin asked, puzzled, "What issue?"
Charles said gravely, "Samuel, your father has been secretly meeting up with Mom, coercing and enticing her to send me back to the Langley family—"
