Chapter 906 Quentin Forces Hannah to Break Up
Austin and Lisa were totally caught off guard.
They had no clue how much Hannah had overheard, so they just stood there, silent and tense, watching her every move.
Hannah's face was stormy as she stomped up to them, shooting daggers at Lisa. "How many times do I have to say it? I don't like him. I just see him as a friend. Why do you keep trying to set us up?"
Even though she was fuming, Austin and Lisa couldn't help but chuckle at her outburst.
At least they got one thing clear from her rant.
She hadn't caught wind of the adoption talk.
She probably only heard the last bit of their convo.
Both of them let out a sigh of relief.
Lisa, trying to sound all righteous, said, "What's wrong with Austin? He's got it all—money, skills, and he's always there for us. Plus, he likes you."
Hannah felt a mix of frustration and anger.
She couldn't wrap her head around why her parents were pushing her towards Austin.
Would marrying someone she didn't love make her happy?
Didn't they care about her feelings at all?
Even if they wanted to repay a favor, there were other ways to do it, not necessarily by marrying him!
Hannah shot back, "Just because he likes me, do I have to like him? If you had to live with someone you didn't love for the rest of your life, would you be okay with that?"
Lisa, boiling with rage, raised her hand to slap her again, but a quick glance at Austin's face made her hesitate.
Hannah stared defiantly at her mom.
It wasn't the first time she'd been hit.
Whenever things didn't go Lisa's way, she resorted to violence.
Hannah was used to it by now.
Austin shot Lisa a warning look, grabbed Hannah's wrist, and calmly explained, "You got it all wrong! Your mom and I were talking about your dad's condition and the medical bills. Since you were asleep in the ward, we didn't want to wake you, so we came out here. She was just thanking me and blurted that out. Don't be mad; your happiness is your call, and we won't meddle. Even though I like you, I'd never force you."
Hannah still trusted Austin.
He'd never done anything to hurt her.
Hearing his explanation, her expression softened a bit, "Really?"
Austin nodded firmly and swore, "I swear, we really didn't come here to win you back! Aunt Lisa just suddenly said that, and I didn't even have time to respond before you showed up."
In reality, his reason for bringing Lisa here wasn't to discuss winning Violet over. He just wanted to warn her to stay away from Violet.
Hearing his words, Hannah believed him.
Hannah continued, "I'll figure out how to handle my dad's medical expenses myself! Our family already owes you so much; we can't keep leaning on you whenever there's trouble!"
If they kept owing, they'd never be able to repay it.
Austin knew what she was thinking and didn't push her. He smiled and said, "I know you're independent. Since you don't want my help, I won't help! But if you ever face something you can't handle, you gotta come to me! Even if we can't be a couple, we can still be friends! Friends help each other out."
Hannah nodded, feeling touched, "Thank you! I get it!"
Austin patted her shoulder and said, "Let's head back to the ward! If your dad wakes up and doesn't see you, he'll be worried."
Hannah nodded again.
They walked back, side by side.
Hannah was lost in thought, her head down. As they left, Austin glanced back at Lisa, his eyes full of warning.
Lisa shivered a bit and quickly plastered on a smile, signaling she’d keep her word.
Back in the ward, Austin hung around for a bit before Hannah shooed him away.
The moment Austin left, Lisa's boldness returned, and she started her tirade again.
Before, with Quentin around, she’d at least pretend to be nice, but now that Quentin was still out cold, she let loose, saying nastier things, "A guy like Austin, and you don’t want him? What, you aiming for the President or something? He saved your dad’s life, and you can’t even be grateful? Your dad’s lying here because of you! You wanna put me in the hospital too? You say our family’s just average. Your dad racked up a ton of debt for that liver transplant. If Austin hadn’t covered the bills, your dad would be dead. He even found the liver donor! Now your dad’s job was thanks to him. If it weren’t for his connections, we’d still be drowning in debt. He’s such a good guy, why don’t you like him? Marrying him would be a stroke of luck for you! Talent or looks, you’re not even in his league."
Hannah just hung her head and gave a bitter smile.
She’d never seen a mom who put down her daughter so much.
Sometimes she wondered if she was really her mom’s kid.
If she was, why didn’t her mom like her?
In front of her dad and Austin, she acted all nice.
But when it was just the two of them, she didn’t even bother to fake it.
Lisa kept ranting, but Hannah tuned her out. Her ears and mind had gone numb.
Maybe Lisa was too loud, 'cause Quentin, who was out cold, furrowed his brows, slowly opened his eyes, and snapped, "Shut up, you’re giving me a headache."
Seeing him awake, Lisa clammed up.
Hannah jumped up, excited, "Dad, you’re finally awake! How do you feel? Any pain?"
Quentin sneered, "Do you even care about me? Your heart and eyes are all for that guy; you don’t give a damn about me."
"Dad," Hannah said, feeling hurt.
She couldn’t understand why Quentin would say such mean things.
Quentin said, "You’ve got two choices. If you wanna be with that guy, don’t call me Dad anymore. I’ll disown you. If you choose me, break up with him and cut all ties. Next month’s your twentieth birthday! By then, go marry Austin!"
Hannah’s tears started falling.
"Dad, why are you forcing me?" she cried.
Quentin got her meaning.
She still didn’t wanna break up?
She was dead set on being with that guy?
His heart, which had just started to get better, began to hurt again. His face turned beet red, and he clutched his chest, groaning in pain.
"Dad, what’s wrong?" Hannah panicked.
Lisa immediately hit the call button by the bed.
Quentin pushed Hannah’s hand away, gritting his teeth in pain, "I don’t have a daughter like you. Don’t call me Dad."
"Dad," Hannah said, feeling utterly crushed, tears streaming down her face.
Lisa yanked her away, cursing, "Get lost, you ungrateful brat. You’ve already driven your dad to this state, you wanna kill him too? What’s so great about that guy? You’re so set on being with him, you don’t care about us at all."
Hannah was shoved and almost fell.
Then chaos erupted.
Doctors and nurses rushed in and started working on Quentin.
