Chapter 938 Violet's Mental Breakdown

Carter and Charles were out on the balcony, chain-smoking like there was no tomorrow, trying to shake off the frustration gnawing at them.

The wind was howling, but it couldn't blow away the dark clouds hanging over their heads.

Charles knew he shouldn't be feeling this way.

Finding Violet should've been a win. Sure, things between them would never be the same, but at least she was alive. Still, something felt off.

Carter crushed his last cigarette in the ashtray, took a deep breath, forced a smile, and said, "You should head back first! When Violet wakes up, Lassie and I will take her home."

Charles shot back, "No way! I gotta see you guys off to the plane. I can't just leave you three here."

Even though he was dying to get back to Hannah, he knew Carter, Violet, and Lassie came all this way for him. He couldn't just ditch them.

Carter sighed but smiled, "You've always been the sensible one! You can go first, I won't hold it against you."

Charles replied, "It's not about being sensible. It's 'cause we're tight!"

And that was the truth.

Back in the day, Carter almost lost his life saving Patricia.

Charles would never forget that.

Carter was a good dude.

He didn't want Carter to be bummed out because of Violet.

Carter chuckled, and the gloom seemed to lift a bit.

They were about to keep standing there, letting the wind blow away the smoke, when they heard Lassie shout from inside, "Carter, Charles, get in here quick!"

They exchanged a look and bolted inside.

As soon as they hit the living room, they heard Violet's panicked voice, "Where's Charles? Did he leave? I need to find Charles."

They rushed into the room and saw Lassie holding Violet tight, her eyes red and tears streaming down. "Charles didn't leave. Don't scare me. I can't take it. My Violet, my daughter."

Violet wasn't calming down, still struggling, trying to get up.

Seeing her like this, Charles felt a mess of emotions he couldn't even describe.

There was pain, guilt, and regret.

'If I had protected her better back then, would any of this have happened? If I had found out about her kidnapping right away, could I have saved her?' Charles thought.

He never imagined the sweet, innocent Violet would end up like this.

Carter rushed to the bedside, helping Lassie hold Violet down.

Lassie was exhausted, and in no time, she was panting and sweating. "Carter, let's go back!"

They couldn't stay here and be a burden to Charles anymore.

Violet was unpredictable now, and she couldn't let that unpredictability hurt others.

Carter nodded. "Alright! Let's hit the airport now! I already got the tickets, we can still make it."

They didn't bother packing, just held onto Violet and got ready to leave. But Violet was freaking out.

She kept struggling and crying in their arms.

At first glance, it looked like they were kidnapping her.

Charles couldn't just let them leave like that. He quickly stepped in front of them. "In your current state, security won't let you through."

They might even call the cops and drag you to the station for questioning.

Even though they weren't human traffickers and had nothing to hide, Violet's condition wasn't fit for a police station. Things could get ugly fast.

Hearing Charles's voice, Violet's eyes lit up. With a sudden burst of strength, she shoved Carter and Lassie aside and threw herself into Charles's arms, clutching his waist tightly. "Charles, I want Charles. I'm scared. There were so many people. They're all so scary."

Charles, worried she might hurt herself, instinctively held her tight to keep her from doing anything drastic.

Lassie was on the verge of tears, looking at Carter. "What do we do now?"

Carter thought for a moment and said, "Let's go to the hospital! In her current state, that's the best option!"

Lassie didn't want Violet to keep going to the hospital, but right now, it seemed like the only choice.

Charles asked, "Which departments does she usually see? I'll have my assistant contact the specialists."

Carter quickly replied, "Neurology, psychiatry, psychology! She usually sees those three. Any of them will do."

Hearing the word psychiatry, Charles felt a sharp pain in his heart, and the distance between him and Violet seemed to close significantly.

Hearing about going to the hospital, Violet got even more agitated.

"No, I don't want to go to the hospital," she said, trying to bolt outside.

Luckily, Charles was ready and held her tight, not letting her run.

Carter didn't care whether she wanted to go or not. He signaled Charles to head out while saying, "Since we brought her back, we've been practically living at the hospital. She's had so many treatments, she's terrified of the place now."

Charles frowned and said, "If it really doesn't work, I'll have Wyatt bring the doctor here!"

Carter shook his head. "No, she needs to be examined. The hospital has the equipment."

Charles realized he was right. Just bringing the doctor wouldn't cut it, so he had to open the door and forcibly pull Violet out.

Violet clung to the door frame, refusing to let go. "I don't want to go to the hospital. It's so scary there. Charles, please, don't take me to the hospital."

Seeing her face covered in tears, Charles felt a heavy weight in his chest.

It wasn't about love. It was a kind of familial pain.

Even though they wouldn't get married, they grew up together, and there were still feelings.

Seeing her like this because of his negligence, he felt awful.

Violet used all her strength.

Soon, Lassie noticed that several of her nails had broken off on the door frame, and her fingers were stained with blood.

Lassie shouted, "Charles, let go quickly. Violet's fingers are injured!"

Charles and Carter were shocked.

Without a word, Charles immediately let go of her.

Violet, like a frightened animal, immediately ran to the sofa, curled up into a ball, holding her legs tightly, her small body trembling.

"I don't want to go to the hospital," she muttered, her eyes filled with terror, staring blankly ahead.
