Chapter 864 Charles's Scandal
Thinking it was kinda rude to be on his phone with Bethany right there, Charles ditched Facebook, locked his screen, and shoved the phone in his pocket.
Charles shot back, "Approved!"
Bethany grinned, "Cool! We should chat more! I'm super curious about your startup story! You're like the first person I know who made it big so young, all on your own."
Charles didn't really have feelings for her, but he didn't mind her either. When it came to women, he always kept it polite.
Charles nodded, "Sure thing!"
After they friended each other on Facebook, Bethany figured it was time to bounce. She waved, "Catch you later!"
"See ya!" Charles waved back but stayed put in the car.
Bethany got out, walked a few steps, then suddenly dashed back.
Charles thought she had something to say, so he rolled down the window.
Charles asked, "Ms. Roberts, need something else?"
Bethany said, "Mr. Watson, can I get one of your business cards?"
Without a word, Charles handed her a card.
Bethany took it, pressed it to her chest, and beamed, "This is the first gift you've given me. I'll cherish it!"
Before Charles could react, she took off.
Charles was left scratching his head.
Little did he know, a sneaky reporter in a nearby van was snapping pics the whole time.
From the moment Bethany got out of the car, the camera was going non-stop.
And Charles had no clue.
After Bethany left, Charles rolled up the window and drove out of the underground parking lot.
When he got home, Charles barely stepped inside when Fannie rushed over, all excited, "Charles, how'd it go? Do you like her?"
The others were lounging on the living room sofa, totally eavesdropping.
Charles shot them a look and poked Fannie’s forehead, annoyed.
Charles said, "Who set me up on a blind date without telling me? Aren't you worried I'd be mad when I got back?"
Fannie looked shocked and said, all pitiful, "You agreed to it."
Charles laughed, frustrated, "When did I agree?"
Fannie said confidently, "Last night, I told you I have lots of pretty friends, and since you're rarely home, I'd fill your schedule. You said, 'Okay, I'll leave it all to you.'"
Charles was speechless.
Fannie, feeling wronged, said, "You agreed, and now you're mad at me."
Charles felt a headache coming on, and his cold, which was just getting better, seemed to flare up from the stress.
Charles said, "I thought you meant going out to have fun!"
If he had known it was a blind date, he would've never agreed.
And now he was stuck with a packed schedule.
What did she think he was?
Fannie rolled her eyes, "I clearly said I have lots of pretty friends! How could that mean just hanging out? With your comprehension skills, how did you manage to grow the company so well?"
As soon as she said it, Fannie regretted it.
Especially when she saw Charles's angry look, her voice trailed off.
Charles knew she meant well, so he didn't blame her. He gently patted her shoulder, "You started this, so you fix it!"
With that, he headed upstairs to his room.
Fannie quickly followed, "Bethany said things are going great! She likes you and thinks you're a gentleman! Why are you saying you didn't agree now?"
Charles headed upstairs without a second glance, "She's a girl. Out of politeness and upbringing, I gave her respect. But that doesn't mean I like her."
Fannie was freaking out, "You don't like her! If you don't like her, why'd you drive her home? She texted me after getting home, asking me to help her chase you!"
Charles ignored her, went up to the second floor, straight into his room, and locked the door.
Fannie was left outside but didn't give up and kept knocking on the door.
Fannie said, "Charles, Bethany is awesome. Why don't you like her? She's beautiful, has a great personality, and has stayed true to herself despite being in the entertainment industry for so long. Girls like her are rare these days."
No response from inside the room.
The eavesdroppers in the living room sneaked upstairs.
Leading the pack was Patricia, followed by Randy, Maria, and Declan.
The five of them pressed their ears against the door and wall, trying to listen in.
Patricia gave Fannie a look, and Fannie nodded, continuing to knock on the door, "Charles, if you don't like Bethany, I'll introduce you to other girls! What kind do you like? Gentle? Lively? Intellectual?"
Seeing that Charles didn't respond, Fannie said, "Charles, say something! If you don't like Bethany, I'll introduce you to other girls, and they'll be super pretty."
The room was so quiet it felt empty.
Everyone pressed their ears closer, and suddenly the door opened from the inside.
Caught off guard, Fannie and Patricia tumbled into the room. Charles didn't help them up; instead, he stepped aside and watched them hit the floor.
Patricia was stunned.
Fannie was also stunned.
Charles said, deadpan, "Remember, stop this now. No more setting me up! And deal with Bethany immediately. Also..."
He paused, squatted down to look at Fannie, and said through gritted teeth, "And don't give my private phone number and Facebook account to anyone. If I find out you did it again, I'll cut off your hand."
Fannie felt super wronged. She was doing it for his own good. And he was scolding her.
Charles said, "Alright, I've said what I needed to say. You can leave now."
Fannie and Patricia lay on the floor, not moving.
Charles, getting impatient, started counting, "One, two..."
Before he reached three, Fannie and Patricia scrambled up and vanished from Charles's sight.
No one in the family dared to mess with him.
He always used the gentlest tone to say the harshest words.
People who didn't know him thought he was polite and courteous, but those who did knew how terrifying he could be.
The saying "don't judge a book by its cover" seemed made for him.
After Patricia and Fannie left, Charles's gaze fell on the remaining three.
The three of them, like they were trained, smiled at him, turned around in unison, and awkwardly chatted as they walked toward the stairs.
Charles closed the door with a sullen face.
After getting back to her room, Fannie immediately relayed Charles's thoughts to Bethany.
She thought that would be the end of it.
But that evening, Charles and Bethany popped up in the entertainment news.
