Chapter 124 Debbie's Reputation Ruined.
In the ICU observation room, Patricia's phone 'dinged' with a message. A colleague from her department sent a WhatsApp message, informing her.
"Bobby didn't survive the resuscitation and passed away at 7:10 PM. Madam Thomas couldn't accept the outcome and fainted; the department is in chaos. If you can avoid coming back, stay away."
The final sentence carried a lot of weight. Patricia frowned slightly and sent a message back.
"Why shouldn’t I return?"
The screen indicated that the other party was typing, but no message came through. Guessing what was happening, Patricia sent another message:
"Does the Thomas family think Bobby's death is related to me?"
This time, the reply came quickly.
"We all know it's not connected to you, but the Thomas family won't listen to reason. They believe you and Professor Brown are responsible for Bobby's death. They're causing a scene in the office right now! Madam Thomas is still unconscious. No one knows where Debbie has gone. You should find somewhere to hide too; I fear the Thomas family might come to the ICU."
Patricia's heart chilled. "Thanks, keep me updated."
"Will do! Be careful in the meantime; the Thomas family is a notable clan in Ivara City. Bobby’s death, being Madam Thomas’s favorite grandson, is bound to provoke her wrath, and she may take actions against you."
Patricia deeply appreciated the concern she replied. "I'll be cautious, and you too, take care."
"Sure! If anything comes up, I'll let you know!" her colleague responded.
"Thanks!" After ending the conversation, Patricia put her phone away with a grave expression.
Martin became concerned and asked, "Did Bobby not make it?"
Despite framing it as a question, he already knew the answer. Patricia, was surprised, and responded, "How did you know?"
Martin smirked sarcastically, "I know Debbie's capabilities all too well. She was never going to manage the surgery without your help. Last time she needed you to stabilize Bobby's condition; now, without you, it's no surprise she failed.”
“Originally, I cautioned Madam Thomas against choosing her, but she wouldn’t listen, insisting on Debbie. Owing her a favor, I relented. Heaven knows what sort of enchantment Debbie used to win such trust from Madam Thomas."
Patricia eyed him sidelong with a sneer, "Aren't you the best person to address that?"
Confusion crossed Martin's features, his look becoming awkward and evasive. Patricia, hiding her mocking smile, briefly relayed her colleague's message to Martin.
Martin shrugged it off, "You're with me now; not even the Thomas family would dare make a move against you. You'll be safe."
Patricia didn’t reply, knowing deep down that the Thomas family wouldn't harm her. Regardless of the outcome, she had no part in the tragedy. The culprit was Debbie.
Pulling out his phone, Martin sent a message to Alan, ordering him to deal with the Thomas family's disturbance. Alan, efficient as ever, soon had the hospital back in order as calmness was restored to the cardiovascular department once more.
After regaining consciousness, Madam Thomas didn’t say a word; she only ordered Bobby’s body to be taken home.
The news of the young heir’s death spread rapidly, headlining newspapers and stunning the city. The Thomas family, who had recently praised Debbie, was now preparing a funeral.
Online comments started pouring in, questioning how Bobby could have died so suddenly. Speculations arose: a transfer out of the ICU too soon, a postoperative infection, a failure of resuscitation.
Gossips linked Debbie’s arrogance to the tragedy, while inside information suggested many experts had advised against surgery in favor of conservative treatment – a recommendation that Debbie had ignored.
The incident also cast Patricia in a negative light, although it was, she who had initially saved Bobby. Now the public blamed both women for his death, their reputations suffering as patients fled from their care.
With the crisis passed, Randy was eventually transferred from the ICU to a regular ward. Seeing Randy recovering well, Patricia allowed herself some relief and found a moment to ask,
"Martin, are you going to Bobby's funeral later?"
Martin, tending to Randy, replied, "Yes. The Langley and Thomas families have longstanding ties. It's only right for me to attend."
Patricia said, "I'll accompany you."
Martin paused, turning to look at her. "Madam Thomas has a deep prejudice against you. Are you sure?"
Patricia sighed as she resigned, "I was involved in the resuscitation effort; it’s only right I go."
After some thought, Martin agreed. Once Alan arrived to look after Randy, Martin drove Patricia to the funeral home. Patricia dressed appropriately in a long-sleeved black dress.
Upon seeing Patricia, Madam Thomas's bloodshot eyes narrowed menacingly. Unaware of the hostility, Patricia approached the casket, her heart heavy as she offered a bunch of flowers.
Madam Thomas's assistant, Spike, wanted to intervene but was stopped by a gesture from Madam Thomas, who conveyed through a single sentence the desire for an undisturbed funeral.
Patricia and Martin paid their respects. The relatives, who had not met Patricia, murmured amongst themselves, speculating on her identity and role in the events.
Unkind words floated around, questioning Patricia's experience and intentions. Madam Thomas did not stop them; she allowed the harsh, unfounded criticisms to continue.
