Chapter 466 Shane Wakes Up
The three-day deadline approached rapidly. Unable to find evidence to clear her name, Patricia was detained after three days, and Martin had hired a lawyer for her defense. Sebastian was the defense attorney representing the Koch family.
Upon hearing of Patricia's detention, Grace finally felt a weight lifted off her shoulders. After Sebastian's return from yet another visit to the police station, she ran to him and said, "Sebastian, I visited Grandpa in the hospital today. He's still in the ICU. I spoke with his doctors, and they told me his condition is critical, and his chances of waking up are slim…"
Her voice faltered as she forced tears. "I'm so worried about grandpa. How could Patricia, after all the kindness Grandpa showed her, do such a heartless thing? Someone as vile as that deserves to be punished by the law."
A fleeting light passed through Sebastian's inscrutable eyes. He raised his hand and gently patted Grace's shoulder. "I know you're worried about Grandpa, but don't worry. We'll get justice for him."
Grace nodded, dabbing her tears. "Patricia can't escape this time with both the witness and the evidence, right? She should be put behind bars permanently so she never harms another person ever again."
Sebastian sighed. "It might be a bit tricky."
Grace's head shot up as she momentarily forgot to feign her tearful concern. "Why?"
Even now? Why couldn't they convict Patricia?
With a crooked smile, Sebastian explained, "Patricia insists she didn't harm Grandpa. Without him waking up, even with my expertise, it's going to be tough to land her a life sentence."
Upon hearing the news, Grace's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Really?"
At last, Patricia would be gone for good. As long as Patricia was sentenced, bribing some desperate convicts inside the prison to kill her without raising any suspicion seemed almost too easy. That thorn in her side would be dealt with once and for all.
When Sebastian noticed her animated expression, his eyes hardened and he said, "But if Grandpa wakes up, at worst, she'll be charged with manslaughter, and the longest sentence for that in our country is just five years."
Grace, however, was not the least bit worried. She had personally driven the knife straight into Shane's heart. With her professional skills, there was no margin for error. Nobody survived a knife through the heart. The Kochs were just prolonging Shane's life with their money; it was only a matter of time before he'd succumb.
She hadn't had the chance to revel in her satisfaction before Ariel rushed over, excitement in her voice as she laid a hand on Sebastian's shoulder. "The hospital just called. Grandpa's out of critical condition and will be moved to a regular ward soon. He'll wake up in a few days!"
"What?" Grace exclaimed, her face stricken with panic. Simultaneously, Sebastian lit up with joy, saying, "Really?"
Ariel was gasping for air from running too hastily; she nodded while steadying her breath. "It's true. They called Jeremy, and he called me. He's too busy to go to the hospital, so he asked me to go right away."
Sebastian grinned. "I'll go with you."
Ariel nodded, about to leave with Sebastian, but Grace grabbed her wrist. "Wait, Ariel."
Ariel turned, puzzled. "What's wrong?"
Fear flashed across Grace's face. The sudden turn of events made it impossible for her to hide the panic written all over her face. "Is Grandpa really okay?"
"Of course, he is. Why would I lie to you?"
Grace's eyes widened in shock, and she said in disbelief, "His heart was pierced, yet he survived?"
This kindled a spark of anger within Ariel. "Yes, it's true! What, aren't you happy Grandpa's waking up?"
Grace realized she had inadvertently let her thoughts slip. Immediately, her eyes narrowed, tears beginning to fall once again. "No, no, I'm just so happy," she said.
Sebastian and Ariel shared a look, a glint flashing in their eyes. Happy? Did she think they were blind?
Head bowed, Grace missed the subtle shift in their expressions as she added, "That doctor is amazing, to have revive Grandpa when he was on the brink of death."
There was a barely perceptible hint of gritted teeth in her voice. If you weren't listening carefully, you might not catch it, but Sebastian and Ariel did. They couldn't help but find it somewhat amusing.
"It's not the doctor's skill; it's Grandpa's luck. His heart is on the right side, not the left. The killer must not have known this, so Grandpa was fortunate to escape with his life."
"What? Grandpa's heart is on the right side?" Grace's face drained of color, wondering how this could be.
Ariel nodded. "Even we didn't know that."
Grace was so furious she nearly clenched her teeth to breaking point. Her eyes narrowed and her head throbbed as if it might explode, but she still feigned cheer, saying, "That's wonderful. Once Grandpa wakes up, he can identify Patricia himself. Then we'll see how she tries to explain herself."
Sebastian and Ariel exchanged a knowing look before Ariel said, "We don't have time to chat; we need to go to the hospital."
Anxious to find out if Shane was truly out of danger, Grace quickly interjected, "I'll come with you. I'm worried about Grandpa and want to see him."
Sebastian drove them to the hospital. Inside the Intensive Care Unit, the doctors were performing a thorough examination on Shane. The three of them waited outside for a long time before the doctor finally emerged.
Ariel asked impatiently, "Doctor, how's he doing now?"
The doctor smiled. "The patient is recovering very well and will be moved to a regular room soon. However, due to his age, his recovery won't be as quick as a younger person's, so he might need some time before he fully wakes up. Don't worry; he's not in any immediate danger."
Ariel grasped the doctor's hand. "Thank you, doctor. Thank you so much!"
The doctor chuckled. "It's all in a day's work."
After a brief exchange, the doctor took his leave. Ariel and Sebastian went off to handle Shane's room transfer paperwork.
Grace stood alone at the entrance to the ICU, gazing through the glass window at Shane, who was hooked up to a ventilator, her hands slowly balling into fists. She was gripping so tightly that her nails dug into her flesh without even feeling it.
Why? Why was fate so cruel?
The things she desperately craved seemed forever just out of reach, yet Patricia, who merely stood there, possessed everything which Grace yearned for.
