Chapter 834: Doing the Appraisal
Carter was sharp and instantly knew something was off.
Carter, puzzled, asked, "Why do you need my hair?"
Then it hit him, and he got all hyped up, "Did you find Violet? Where's she at? Country D? I'll head there right now."
Worried he'd actually bolt and spill the beans to Austin, Charles quickly stopped him.
Charles explained, "Nah, if I found Violet, you'd be the first to know! Over the years, I've come across a bunch of girls who look like Violet, but we always need DNA to be sure. I keep some of your hair on me for quick ID, anytime, anywhere."
Carter wasn't ready to give up, "Did you find another lookalike? Let me go check! Violet's my daughter; I'd know her anywhere."
Even if she wasn't, he still wanted to try.
Charles said, "No need! If I find Violet, you'll be the first to know!"
Besides, it's been seven years. The little girl from back then had grown up now. Some people's looks change over time. So, he couldn't just go by her old appearance; he had to check her facial contours and bone structure.
Carter sighed deeply, feeling helpless, "I know, it's been seven years, and the odds are slim! I just feel so regretful."
Carter regretted not catching the person who hurt Violet.
Carter regretted not seeing Violet one last time.
This was a father's guilt for his daughter.
During the years Violet was missing, he lived in constant guilt and self-blame.
He so wished he could see Violet again while he was still alive.
Even if it was just in a dream!
Charles felt a bit uncomfortable hearing this, his eyes slightly reddening.
Carter said sadly, "Charles, do you think Violet blames me for not protecting her? She hasn't come to see me in my dreams even once since she passed away. I really miss her."
By the end, he was choking up and couldn't speak.
Charles swallowed hard and said hoarsely, "I think the reason she hasn't visited you in your dreams is because she's not dead! I firmly believe she's not dead!"
Otherwise, Charles wouldn't have been searching for seven years. He trusted his instincts. He couldn't be wrong.
Carter lowered his eyes and said, "I also hope she's still alive! I hope I can find her while I'm still alive."
But the world is so big, where should he start looking?
Charles comforted him, "Carter, don't overthink it! I believe we will find Violet one day!"
Carter replied, "Yeah! I hope so!"
Carter didn't want to burden Charles with his emotions, so he didn't continue the topic.
After chatting for a while longer, they ended the call.
Charles placed his phone on the desk, leaned back in his chair, and tiredly rubbed his eyebrows.
Now, he could only wait for Carter's hair to arrive.
He should be patient and wait a little longer.
Hey, they had waited for seven years.
A few more days wouldn't matter.
Charles quickly composed himself, as if nothing had happened, and threw himself into his intense work.
Charles couldn't leave work on time because of this matter.
Charles walked out of the office, ready to let Hannah go home first while he and Wyatt stayed to work overtime. But just as he was about to speak, Hannah's phone rang.
Charles considerately said, "You should answer the phone first."
Hannah glanced at the caller ID and the time, knowing it was Austin coming to pick her up from work. She hung up the phone without hesitation, placed it on the desk, and stood up, saying, "It's nothing important! Do you need something from me?"
But the phone rang again just after she hung up.
Charles instinctively glanced at her ringing phone.
Charles said, "I still have some work to finish. You can go home first; Wyatt and I will stay."
Hannah quickly shook her head and refused, "No way, how can I go home while you two stay to work overtime! I'll stay and help; three people can work faster, and you can go home earlier."
Charles shook his head, "No need! Wyatt and I can handle it! You should go home first!"
Hannah hesitated, "I..."
Hannah still wanted to stay, but her phone kept ringing.
Hannah frowned in frustration and decisively turned off her phone.
Hannah insisted, "Mr. Watson, I'm really fine. Anyway, if I go home after work, I'll just be watching TV alone. I'd rather stay and work with you guys! I can also learn more."
Charles raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you sure it's nothing? The person calling seems to be in a hurry."
One call after another. Anyone would think it was her boyfriend!
Hannah smiled, "It's really nothing! You go ahead; I'll let them know."
Seeing her insistence, Charles didn't refuse anymore and turned back to the office.
After a while, Wyatt also came in with a stack of documents.
Hannah quickly turned her phone back on.
As soon as the phone was on, before she could react, Austin called again.
She suppressed her anger and said in a low voice, "I have to work overtime tonight, and I don't know when I'll finish! You don't have to wait for me; go home first!"
Austin's tone sank, "Why do you have to work overtime? You didn't mention it before."
Hannah patiently explained, "Isn't it normal to work overtime at the company! Mr. Watson wanted me to go home, but I just entered the company. How can I leave while the boss works overtime! That wouldn't be good! So, I volunteered to stay and work overtime!"
Austin said unhappily, "Just the two of you?"
Hannah looked at the closed office door and said, "And Wyatt! The three of us together! More people can work faster."
Austin was suspicious.
He wanted to tell her to quit, but he finally said, "Do you really have to work overtime?"
Hannah's attitude was unusually firm, "Yes! Since I'm here for an internship, I want to learn something. I don't want to waste time!"
Although Austin was very unhappy, thinking of Charles, he could only suppress his anger and pretended to be considerate, "Okay! Then I'll wait for you across the street from your company."
Hannah immediately said, "No need, I don't know how long I'll be working! You should go home first!"
Austin insisted, "I worry about you. Let me wait for you!"
Hannah was also firm, "No, if you're here, I'll be thinking about you and won't be able to focus on work! You should go home first! I'll call you when I'm done."
Austin felt happy for her words, and he noticeably cheered up.
Austin agreed, "Okay! I'll go home first. Call me if you need anything; I'm always here!"
Hannah replied, "Okay!"
Seeing that he was finally going home, Hannah breathed a slight sigh of relief.
After ending the call, Hannah didn't have time to think about Austin anymore. She grabbed the documents on her desk and went into the office.
