Chapter 1036 Austin's Casual Inquiry
The doctor was drenched in sweat, even his eyelashes were wet from the sweat dripping down his forehead.
He took off his mask, let out a heavy sigh of relief, and wiped his sweat as he said, "The patient is very lucky. Previously, 99% of severe cases that experienced vomiting during observation didn't make it. But thanks to our relentless efforts, we managed to save this patient! He's that one percent."
Lassie had been holding her breath, waiting for the doctor's response. Upon hearing his words, she exhaled deeply.
"Does this mean he's out of danger? No longer in life-threatening condition?"
As she asked this, Lassie and Austin both anxiously awaited the doctor's response.
The doctor shook his head, "It's hard to say at this point. We can only say he has passed the most critical stage for now. Whether he can make it through the rest, I can't be sure. He still needs to be observed in the ICU for three more days. If there are no issues, then he should be fine."
"Okay, thank you, doctor. I understand, thank you!"
Shortly after talking with the doctor, Carter was wheeled back to the ICU.
Austin and Lassie remained tense as they sat outside the ICU.
Time passed slowly.
Just then, Austin's phone rang in his pocket.
The call was from his professor.
As Austin hesitated whether to answer, Lassie spoke up, "Maybe your professor has something urgent. Go ahead and take it! Your dad's situation is already set; one phone call won't change anything."
Hearing her words, Austin answered the call and put the phone to his ear.
"Austin, how's your dad doing? Is he still not out of danger?"
Austin shook his head, then realized his professor couldn't see him, and said, "No, he's still under observation in the ICU!"
His professor said with difficulty, "Here's the thing, we have a situation here that only you can handle. Can you come over now? If not, that's fine! Your father comes first."
Austin instinctively looked at Lassie.
Lassie immediately understood and said, "If there's something you need to do, go ahead! I'll stay here with your dad. If anything happens, I'll call you right away."
Austin hesitated for a moment but eventually agreed.
"Wait a moment, I'll be right there."
His professor asked apologetically, "Will this affect your ability to take care of your father?"
Austin replied, "My mom is with him. She'll stay while I handle this quickly and come back."
"Your mom is there? Alright, then come over quickly! I'll be waiting for you in the lab."
Austin's professor's tone noticeably lightened.
"Okay! I'll be there soon!"
After ending the call, Austin said to Lassie, "Mom, if anything happens with Dad, contact me immediately. I'll be back soon."
Lassie nodded, "Go take a shower first. You look exhausted, and your beard is getting long."
As soon as she finished speaking, Austin's stomach growled.
Lassie felt both heartache and amusement.
"Grab something to eat on your way! You probably haven't had a proper meal while watching over your dad. I'll stay here, don't worry! Take your time and handle your business."
Austin felt a warmth in his heart.
"Okay! Mom, I'm leaving now!"
Lassie stood up and gently patted his shoulder, "Alright! Go ahead!"
Austin reluctantly glanced at Carter through the glass wall, then left.
On his way back to the dorm, he sent a message to Tina: [How's it going?]
Tina replied after a while: [Hannah asked why we moved, but I managed to brush it off! She's now asleep after I hypnotized her.]
Austin's tightly furrowed brows relaxed a bit.
His long fingers quickly tapped on the screen.
[Make sure to stay with her at all times! My father's situation won't stay hidden for long. The Langley family will likely come soon. Don't let her go out until they leave.]
Tina: [I know what to do, don't worry.]
Austin looked at his phone, stayed silent for a while, and then quickly typed another line.
[Thank you! I'll properly thank you once this blows over.]
Tina: [There's no need for thanks between us! I'm not doing this for your gratitude! Take good care of your father. I'll handle Hannah, so don't worry.]
Austin felt a warmth in his heart as he read Tina's message.
Besides his parents, Tina was the first person to care for him, trust him unconditionally, and help him.
Even his biological mother only knew how to use him.
It felt so good to have someone genuinely care for and like him.
Austin hesitated for a long time in the input box, typing and deleting several times, before finally sending just one line.
[Thank you!]
Then he deleted all the messages, exited the chat, and turned off his phone.
As Austin had predicted, the Langley family and the Parker family quickly learned about Carter's critical condition. Martin and Ryan rushed to Country H overnight.
Because Hannah was still missing, Charles had been in a state of despair, frantically searching everywhere. The Langley family had to both comfort him and look for Hannah, leaving them stretched thin.
Martin and Ryan stood outside the glass wall, looking at Carter, who was covered in tubes, their eyes red with sorrow.
Ryan clenched his fist, "How did it come to this? Carter was fine before he came here, and now he's in the hospital in just a few days?"
Lassie was too heartbroken to speak.
Austin explained, "It's my fault. I shouldn't have taken my father there! It was a newly built bridge, and the anti-slip measures weren't in place yet. Someone had spilled water on it, and my father didn't see it. He stepped on it and fell off the bridge."
For a moment, Martin and Ryan didn't know what to say.
After a while, Ryan said, "Carter isn't that old. How could he not see such a large puddle of water on the ground?"
Austin didn't respond. He lowered his head, his eyes darting cunningly. When he looked up again, his eyes were filled with sadness.
"Uncle Martin, I heard from my parents that Hannah is missing! What's the situation now? Have you found her?"
He was deliberately fishing for information.
He wanted to see if Charles had come up with any new ways to find Hannah.
He was already well aware of Charles's previous methods, which allowed him to cleverly avoid them and keep Hannah hidden.
He was afraid Charles might come up with new methods during this time.
The sooner he knew, the sooner he could prepare.
