Chapter 778: The Rival
Two years later.
Randy had become super famous from his piano tours, flying all over the country and barely spending any time at home. He had a private tutor traveling with him, but since he was really smart, he finished all his elementary school work in just three months.
Maria and Declan were in their last year of kindergarten, while Violet and Austin were ready to start. Carter wanted to send Violet to a nearby private kindergarten, but she insisted on going to the same school as Charles. Charles's school had a fourteen-year system: two years of kindergarten, six years of elementary, two years of middle, and four years of high school. The kindergarten and elementary sections were separated by a big playground. Carter didn't want to send Violet so far, but he couldn't say no to her and eventually agreed to send both Austin and Violet there.
Patricia held Maria's hand in one and Declan's in the other, with Charles and Fannie standing beside them. Fannie caught a snowflake and shivered, "It's freezing! Why aren't we going inside?"
Charles shrugged, "If you're cold, go in."
Fannie tightened her collar and suddenly remembered, "Oh, today’s Violet’s first day at kindergarten! You're waiting for her, right?"
Charles blushed and snapped, "You talk too much!"
Fannie stuck out her tongue at him. Patricia asked Maria and Declan, "Are you cold? Should we go inside?"
Before they could answer, a black luxury car pulled up. Out came Violet, small and chubby, running straight to Charles and hugging him. "Charles, I miss you! Are you waiting for me?"
Charles smiled and ruffled her hair, "Are you cold?"
Violet shook her head., "No, I'm just happy to see you."
Charles took her hand, "Come on, I'll take you to your classroom."
Violet nodded, carrying her little backpack and following Charles. Watching them, Carter sighed. Over the past three years, he had sighed a lot. He used to be jealous, but now he was used to it. He realized Violet was born for Charles. She was always focused on him, making Carter feel like an outsider.
Lassie then got out of the car with Austin. He wore a dark blue jacket and a red hat, standing half a head taller than Violet, with a cold and aloof vibe. Patricia glanced at Austin. Even after three years, she still didn't like him. She didn't know why, but she just felt uncomfortable around him. Fannie, Maria, and Declan felt the same. When he got out of the car, they just stared without saying a word.
Lassie gently tugged Austin's arm, "Austin, say hello!"
Austin coldly greeted Patricia, "Good day, Patricia."
"Hello," Patricia replied.
Lassie apologized, "Sorry, he's always been like this, not very talkative."
Patricia shrugged, "I waited at the door for you! It's getting late, let's go inside."
Lassie nodded and led Austin into the school. Austin ended up walking next to Maria. With a mischievous glint, Maria said, "You haven't greeted me yet! Call me sister..."
Austin glanced at her indifferently and ignored her. Maria pouted, "Why are you so impolite? I'm talking to you! Why won't you respond?"
Austin stared at her and said, "I have a name."
Maria, feeling a bit scared, switched places with Declan to stay away from Austin. Declan and Austin, both expressionless, glanced at each other and then looked away, ignoring each other.
The enrollment procedures were already done. After Patricia and Lassie dropped the kids off, they left. Violet clung to Charles, not wanting to let go, "Charles, you must come see me after class! I'll be scared here alone."
Charles nodded, "Sure."
Violet's eyes welled up, "You must come! I'll be waiting for you!"
Charles nodded again, "Yes, I will."
Only then did Violet reluctantly let go and wave goodbye. Austin sat on a bench in the corner, his dark eyes fixed on Violet. Only when he looked at Violet did his eyes show a hint of emotion, though it was well hidden.
Violet leaned against the window, watching the direction Charles had left, pouting. They had just parted, and she already missed him.
She wished she could attend classes with Charles. Why couldn't she grow up faster? Then she could always be with him.
Lost in thoughts, Violet didn't hear the teacher calling her. Austin stood up and pulled her back to her seat. Violet leaned her head on his shoulder, pitifully saying, "Austin, I miss Charles so much! Do you think he'll come see me after class?"
Austin's expression didn't change, but his hand moved slightly, "I don't know."
Violet frowned, "If he doesn't come, will you go with me to find him?"
Austin stayed silent. Violet, used to his silence, continued, "Why does time pass so slowly? How much longer until class is over?"
Austin just listened quietly. Finally, when class was over, Violet immediately stood at the door, eagerly waiting for Charles. Unfortunately, she waited all day, but Charles never showed up.
"Charles lied to me. He said he would come see me, but he didn't."
Austin took out a handkerchief and gently wiped her tears, silently taking her hand. "He's not coming. Let's go home."
Violet refused to leave, still standing at the door waiting for Charles. Austin said calmly, "He's not coming. I'm here with you. I'm your brother."
Hearing this, Violet started crying. "No, no, I want Charles. I want Charles, not you."
Austin's expression changed instantly, a cold glint flashing in his dark eyes.
