Chapter 997 Violet's Fate
After Charles took off, Wyatt and his bodyguards bounced too.
The store felt super empty all of a sudden.
Lassie, wiping her tears, said, "Honey, Violet really messed up Hannah. Let's hit the hospital and apologize for Violet."
Seeing Lassie looking so worn out, Carter said, "You don't look up for it. I'll go instead."
Lassie shook her head. "No, I need to go! Violet crossed the line this time! I need to apologize and thank Hannah. If it wasn't for her, Shirley could've been in big trouble."
Carter thought for a sec and then nodded. "Alright, but you really don't look well enough to go now. Let's head home, you get some rest, and we'll go together tomorrow morning."
"But..."
Before she could argue, Carter cut her off, "Hannah just woke up and is probably super weak today. Charles probably doesn't want anyone bugging her. We'll go when she's feeling better tomorrow."
Lassie thought about it and agreed.
Everyone was in rough shape today; tomorrow would be better.
Lassie said, "Alright, let's go home for now."
Carter nodded, put his arm around her shoulder, and they left the fried chicken joint.
After the bodyguards left, people started coming and going outside, and it gradually got busy again.
Everyone knew something serious had gone down, but no one knew the details. They tried to find out, but it was like someone had wiped all the evidence clean.
Lassie stopped walking after a bit.
Carter knew what she was thinking and asked softly, "Are you worried about Violet?"
Lassie's nose tingled with emotion. "How can I not worry? Even though I know she's faking it, it's a mental hospital. How will she handle it there?"
Carter sighed and tried to comfort her, "She really messed up this time! Ever since we brought her back, it's been nothing but trouble! She needs to learn a lesson."
Lassie's eyes welled up again.
She held her chest and said, "Thinking about what she said when they took her away makes me so sad! I've tried to give her the best of everything, but she hates me so much; it really hurts."
Carter felt the pain too. "It's all in the past now. Don't dwell on it! If she still doesn't change, we'll just pretend we never had this daughter."
Lassie didn't say anything more and walked silently towards the parking lot.
Lassie thought, 'How could I pretend Violet was never born? I carried her for ten months and gave birth to her! I can't ignore my responsibility for how things turned out. Now, I really don't know what to do!'
Austin had been escorting Lassie and Carter to the underground parking lot, but he was thinking about Hannah. After Lassie and Carter got in the car, he found an excuse. "Dad, Mom, I just remembered I have something to do at the lab. You go ahead, and I'll head to school first."
Carter didn't ask much and said, "Alright, be careful on the road."
"You too!"
They had come in two cars. Austin stood in the parking lot, watching Carter's car drive away before finding his own car and heading to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Charles took Stella straight to the hospital.
Hannah was still out cold, not showing any signs of waking up.
Shirley, probably exhausted, was also snoozing by the bedside.
Seeing them both asleep, Charles gently tucked Hannah in and grabbed an air conditioning blanket from the cabinet to cover Shirley.
Stella stood by the bed, fuming at the sight of the bandage on Hannah's forehead and her still-swollen face.
"Just sending her to a mental hospital is too easy. We should've cut off her hands, stripped her naked, and thrown her on the street, then posted the video online," she muttered, only loud enough for Charles to hear.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got.
They shouldn't have let Violet off so easily.
Charles and Stella stood by the bed, looking at the sleeping Hannah, clenching their fists as if the tighter they clenched, the less suffocated they felt.
Charles said, "She's Carter's daughter, so I can't do that! For Violet, staying in a mental hospital is worse than death."
Charles thought, 'Even if she's not crazy, she will be once she's in that place. No normal person comes out of there unscathed. Violet likes to pretend to be crazy, right? Then let her really go crazy! We grew up together; this is the last bit of dignity I can give her.'
Stella blamed herself, "It's all my fault for not protecting her! If I had come earlier, none of this would have happened! I would have killed that lunatic Violet with a knife."
Charles didn't say anything more, pulled up a chair, and quietly sat by Hannah's bedside.
There were only two chairs in the ward, one for Shirley and one for Charles, so Stella silently sat on the sofa.
Austin had a hard time finding out which hospital Hannah was in and planned to secretly take a look at her from outside the ward, just one look, to make sure she was safe and then leave immediately.
But he found Charles' bodyguards guarding the ward.
He waited outside for a while, seeing no sign of the bodyguards leaving, hesitated for a moment, and finally left.
Carter was right that today was indeed not a good day to be here.
Hannah would definitely be angry if she saw him.
The best way was to come with Carter and Lassie tomorrow.
With elders around, she would probably hold back her anger out of respect.
After leaving the hospital, Austin didn't go back but drove straight to the mental hospital.
Before he even got close to Violet's room, he heard her cursing, "Lassie, you'll die a horrible death! And Carter, do you think I care about being your daughter? If it weren't for the inheritance, I wouldn't even want to look at you. You sent your own daughter here and won't have a good end. Let me out. I still have to marry Charles! Charles loves me; he's just been bewitched by that bitch Hannah, so he's treating me like this! Let me out. None of you are good people..."
Before she could finish, she saw Austin's face, and the rest of her words got stuck in her throat.
Violet stood at the door of her room, looking at Austin through the vent.
After a brief moment of shock, Violet immediately got excited. "Let me out, hurry! I can't stay here; I'll go crazy. There's nothing here. Everything is done in this room. It's worse than prison! Let me out. You came to take me away, right?"
