Chapter 195 Martin's Plan to Win Back His Wife
Patricia felt his anger and said helplessly, "Stop it, you're acting like a child! He's ill right now, and I'm the only person he knows here. If I don't look after him, who will?"
Martin's demeanor showed no sign of changing. "Even so, it's not appropriate! Do you understand what it means for a single woman to cook for a single man? Alone together, those who don't know any better, might think you're husband and wife!"
Patricia was at a loss for words, "But I used to cook for you, didn’t I? Were we ever husband and wife?"
"Weren’t we?" Martin asked, his voice full of conviction.
"Were we?" Patricia retorted with equal force, staring directly into his eyes.
Martin felt uneasy under her gaze, "Ex-husband and wife still count as husband and wife, don't they?"
The voice speaking had clearly lowered; the previous assertiveness was gone. With the mention of divorce, the events surrounding it with Debbie, Patricia felt anger surge up. She pried off his hands, one finger at a time.
"There's no time left; I really have to go."
Martin switched to clutching the hem of her dress, looking at her with pitiful eyes, "Is it absolutely necessary for you to go?"
With vigorous nods, Patricia affirmed her need to leave. Martin's expression turned even more aggrieved, "Can you not go?"
His tone was as meek as it could get, a stark contrast to his earlier dominance and assertiveness.
Suddenly, Patricia felt an unprecedented sense of powerlessness: "I can't, he is a patient, and I am a doctor; besides, I am his only friend! Martin, stop being unreasonable! You're making this very difficult for me."
"I will go with you," Martin compromised as a last resort.
Grinding her teeth, Patricia neither accepted, nor rejected the offer, but simply stared at him in silence. Martin's scalp tingled under her gaze, his skin crawling with goosebumps. Under her piercing stare, he eventually let go of her sleeve.
With a glance back at Martin, Patricia picked up her bag and left. Watching her figure fade from sight, Martin felt a sense of defeat, hanging his head and drooping his shoulders as he returned to the ward.
Randy had just finished his meal, and the caregiver was tidying up the dishes. Seeing Martin come in, dispirited, Randy quickly asked with concern, "Dad, what's wrong? Weren't you going to have dinner with Mom? Why are you back alone?"
Martin sat on the sofa with a glum expression, the atmosphere around him heavy, chilling the temperature of the room noticeably.
Randy went to sit beside him, chuckling, "Did Mom not agree?"
Hitting the nail on the head, Martin felt his pride wounded, his face darkening even more. With a sly twinkle in his eyes, Randy sighed heavily like an old soul.
"Ah... I heard from Charles, and I think you deserve it. You were so mean to Mom in the past. It's because of you, I grew up without a mom, and got called a wild child."
As soon as he finished speaking, Martin gave him a deadly glare. Undeterred, Randy chuckled, "Daddy, tell me honestly, do you like Mom? Do you want to reconcile with her?"
Martin raised an eyebrow, "Isn't it obvious enough?"
Though he did not answer Randy's question directly, the answer was evident. Randy snapped his fingers, "If you love Mom, then it's much simpler."
"Huh?" Martin looked at him, puzzled.
Randy motioned him to come closer with a wave of his hand. Seeing his mysteriously feigned expression, Martin knew he shouldn't indulge him, yet he found that he couldn’t help himself be drawn closer.
Randy whispered into his ear, "Daddy, if you want to woo Mommy, you need to show real sincerity, not just talk about it. You have to show her with actions."
Martin suddenly realized that although Randy was only five, his words made a lot of sense.
"How do I prove it?" Martin asked.
"Chase her!"
"Chase her?" Martin was a bit confused.
Seeing his clueless expression, Randy said incredulously, "Daddy, don't tell me you've never chased a girl before?"
Martin’s face showed Randy the answer, and it was very obvious. At first, Randy was shocked, then he understood. The women chased his dad, why would he need to chase after girls?
"What do women love most? Just give her that."
"What do women love most?" Martin asked naively.
Randy thought, and after a brief silence, "Flowers, of course! Especially red roses, they symbolize love. Send Mommy a bouquet of red roses every day."
Martin nodded, half comprehending, and asked, "Then what?"
"Sweet talk her! Say things like 'I love you so much, I can't live without you or You're my everything.'"
Martin was puzzled. "How do you know so much at such a young age?"
Randy rolled his eyes and answered confidently, "I may never have chased a girl, but that's how they do it on TV."
"Will that work?" Martin stared at Randy, deeply skeptical.
Randy replied assertively, "Of course, it will work! Do you want Mommy to be taken away by that Hunter?"
"Of course not!" Martin answered without any hesitation.
"Then do as I say!" Randy said and took Martin's phone. He typed 'sweet things to say to someone you love' into a web search, copied a few lines he was satisfied with, and sent them to Patricia on WhatsApp.
Martin wondered aloud, "Is that really OK?"
Randy didn't respond but opened a buying app, and ordered a bouquet of red roses, for delivery to Patricia's office, set for the next morning at eight. With the message ‘From your most loving Martin.’
Martin shuddered at the cheesy phrase, feeling goosebumps all over. He felt that it was too cringeworthy!
"Change it; don't write those words." Martin tried but could help but speak out.
Randy glared at him menacingly and warned, "Do you really want to win Mommy back or not? Let me tell you, with all the terrible things you've done before, Mommy won't easily forgive you.”
“If you don't take action, she'll end up with Hunter. Do you want to regret it for the rest of your life? Do you want me to be without a mother? Or do you want a half-sibling to share the same mother but a different father?"
What he said was so serious that the picture of Patricia and Hunter getting married unwittingly appeared in Martin's mind. His heart hurt so much that he couldn't breathe and gritted his teeth.
He told Randy to write what he thought was best. Maybe that's just what women like. After everything was set up, Randy put his phone back into his pocket, with satisfaction, and clapped his hands.
“It’s all set! I'll send a few more later. I've saved them in your notes, just copy and paste when it's time."
"Got it!" Martin agreed obediently. In that moment, he was like an eager student, exceptionally compliant and open to learning.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town. Patricia, who was driving, heard the 'ding' of a WhatsApp notification.
She pulled out her phone, carefully keeping an eye on the road while opening the chat. But when she saw the message, her hand slipped, and she nearly crashed into the road barrier.
