Chapter 1035 Emergency

Lassie placed her palms against the glass wall, as if she could touch Carter lying in bed through it.

"How could this happen? He was fine when we came; he even said he would bring back my favorite food. How did he end up like this in just a few days?"

Austin lowered his head, not daring to look at Lassie.

"It's all my fault! I shouldn't have taken Dad there! The bridge was newly built, and the ground hadn't been treated for slip resistance. Someone spilled water on it, and Dad didn't see it. He stepped on it and fell down the stairs."

Hearing his words, Lassie looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"Bridge? Why did you take him to the bridge?"

Austin had already thought of an excuse.

"The bridge was newly built. Dad said everyone was upset about Hannah's disappearance, and he was feeling down, so he wanted to find a quiet place to relax. I thought of that place.

I never expected this to happen. If I had known, I wouldn't have taken him there.

Mom, I'm sorry, it's all my fault!"

He had been thinking a lot these past few days.

If he had another chance, would he still take Carter there and push him down?

He didn't know.

If Carter insisted on telling Charles about Hannah's whereabouts, he really didn't know if he would push Carter again.

He loved Hannah.

He couldn't lose Hannah.

He also loved Carter.

Between Hannah and Carter, he didn't know how to choose.

Seeing his haggard appearance, Lassie didn't blame him. She leaned her head on his shoulder, crying and saying, "It's not your fault. Sometimes, things are just beyond our control. Your dad's life has been full of hardships.

"When he was young, he lost both his parents. His father's property was taken by his uncle and aunt. He grew up being bullied and insulted by them. It wasn't until he became an adult that he managed to reclaim the property with his own abilities."

"He thought life would get better, but to secure his position in the Moore family, he married me without love."

"Years ago, he and Martin almost died in Country M."

"We finally opened up to each other and developed some feelings, but then Violet was kidnapped as a teenager. We barely got her back, but she changed a lot."

"I thought we would finally have some peace in our old age, but then this happened."

"His life has been incredibly difficult."

The past Lassie spoke of was something Austin had never heard.

He didn't know Carter had suffered so much as a child.

He reached out, placed his hand on Lassie's shoulder, and gently patted her to comfort her.

"Mom, I'm sorry."

'Dad, I'm sorry.'

He didn't dare to say his apology to Carter out loud, only in his heart.

At this moment, he didn't know what else he could do besides say sorry.

Lassie cried bitterly, completely at a loss, not knowing what to do.

Just then, a strange noise came from the ICU. The nurse who had been guarding outside suddenly stood up and pressed the red emergency button.

Lassie and Austin held their breath.

Austin grabbed the nurse and asked, "Nurse, what's wrong? What happened?"

"The patient is in trouble!"

The nurse didn't have time to explain and hurriedly left after saying that.

Austin and Lassie couldn't go in and didn't want to hinder the doctors and nurses, so they could only press against the glass wall and watch inside.

"Carter, Carter..."

"Dad."

They saw Carter, who had been quietly lying in bed, suddenly convulse as if in pain. Then, he started to convulse more frequently, as if having a seizure.

Then, his head tilted, and he vomited a mass of foul matter.

Austin was stunned, standing there in a daze, his mind filled with the doctor's words.

'The patient's condition is very serious. He hasn't passed the critical stage yet. He needs to be observed in the ICU for a few days. If he vomits or has internal bleeding during this time, we won't be able to save him.'

He vomited.

Carter vomited.

The doctor said if Carter vomited, he would die.

Did Carter not pass the critical stage?

Did Carter not make it?

Did Carter die because of him?

Tears streamed down Austin's face.

"What happened? Why did your father suddenly vomit? He was fine just now; why did he vomit?"

Lassie didn't know what had happened, but she felt a strong sense of unease.

She felt that vomiting was not a good sign.

And the nurse's words just now...

Did something happen to Carter?

Austin opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but found he couldn't make a sound, not a single word.

Soon, several doctors and nurses in sterile gowns entered the ICU through another door.

Lassie and Austin stood outside the glass wall, watching the doctors and nurses try to save Carter. Perhaps the facilities in the ward were inadequate, so they eventually transferred Carter to the emergency room.

Lassie and Austin followed to the emergency room door.

They wanted to ask about Carter's condition, but the nurses and doctors never came out after going in.

They could only wait anxiously outside.

Lassie held Austin's hand, crying uncontrollably.

"Your father will be okay, right? He will get better, right? He almost died before, but he pulled through. He will pull through this time too, right?"

"Dad will be okay, he will be okay."

Austin didn't know if he was comforting Lassie or himself.

He was so scared that his body was trembling.

Another long wait ensued.

Hours passed.

Finally, the emergency room door opened.

They thought it was good news, but saw a nurse rushing in with a blood bag. The nurse in the emergency room took the blood bag and went back in, closing the door again.

Blood bags were sent in one after another.

Even if Lassie was naive, she knew the situation was bad.

She squatted on the ground, holding her head, crying and praying in her heart, hoping Carter would be okay.

She had never felt time pass so slowly, so unbearably.

Every time she heard a noise, she thought the emergency room door had opened. Each time she looked up, she was met with disappointment.

Finally, after countless glances, the emergency room door did open.

A doctor came out, looking exhausted.

Lassie immediately stood up, but because she had been squatting for too long, her legs were numb, and she almost fell. Fortunately, Austin quickly caught her.

Lassie, supported by Austin, came to the doctor and anxiously asked, "Doctor, how is my husband? He's okay, right?"
