Chapter 734 Hunter's Twin Brother
Sunset Valley was a new villa area, barely occupied and poorly managed.
Patricia and Martin found house number 138 by following the address.
They exchanged a glance, and Martin rang the doorbell.
No answer.
He pressed it again.
Suddenly, all the lights in the villa flicked on, and a middle-aged woman in her thirties or forties, Piper Russell, stepped out slowly. She looked at Patricia and Martin warily asked, "Who are you looking for?"
Martin hesitated, "I'm looking for..."
He realized Hunter hadn't given him a name.
After a moment, he said, "Hunter sent me!"
Piper's demeanor changed instantly. She smiled, "Did Hunter send you with any instructions?"
Martin replied, "I want to see his brother."
Piper opened the door, gesturing for them to come in. She led them to the first floor, poured coffee, and said respectfully, "He's about to go to sleep. Please wait here. I'll go wake him."
Martin stopped her, "No need! Just take us up."
Piper looked surprised and unnatural, "You'd better wait downstairs. Hunter said no one is allowed upstairs."
Hearing that, Patricia and Martin couldn't insist.
After offering them coffee, Piper went upstairs.
Patricia glanced around the house.
Despite only Piper being there, the house was very clean. It seemed that Hunter really cared for his brother and had hired someone to look after him.
Patricia was lost in thought when she heard the sound of breaking porcelain came from upstairs.
Patricia and Martin exchanged a glance.
Martin frowned, "Don't you think there's something strange about this maid?"
Patricia looked puzzled, "What's strange?"
Martin said, "When we wanted to go upstairs, her reaction was unnatural. If it was just Hunter's instruction, she could say it directly. Why did she have a strange expression?"
It felt like there was a secret upstairs, something Piper didn't want them to find out.
Patricia got the hint and her face darkened, "Should we go check it out?"
Martin nodded.
They stood up and quietly climbed the stairs. Halfway up, they heard footsteps. Startled, they quickly turned back and sat down on the sofa.
Just as they sat down, Piper came down with someone.
When they saw the face same as Hunter's, Patricia and Martin, although they had guessed that, couldn't hide their shock.
The man looked sad, staring at the ground, not daring to raise his head.
Patricia and Martin exchanged a look.
Martin stood up, walked over, and reached out to touch him.
The man jumped back like a scared rabbit seeing Martin's hand.
He said, "Don't hit me. Don't hit me. I'll be good. Don't hit me. I'll be very good, very obedient."
His reaction made Martin frown.
Piper, startled and worried about revealing too much, quickly explained, "It's usually just the two of us here. Hunter is very busy and rarely visits. So he gets scared when he sees strangers."
Martin raised his eyebrows.
His reaction clearly wasn't just fear of strangers.
The last time they saw him at the psychiatric hospital, he seemed stable.
But now, he looked worse.
Patricia thought Martin might have scared him, so she walked over and gently said, "He's not going to hit you. He just wants to help. We won't hurt you."
Her voice was soothing, like talking to a child.
Hearing Patricia, the man slowly raised his head. His unfocused eyes brightened when he saw her.
Before she could react, he hugged her.
Patricia was stunned, unable to respond.
Martin narrowed his eyes dangerously.
The man was oblivious and excitedly saying, "Patricia, Patricia, you came to see me. I missed you, I missed you so much, Patricia."
Though his words were jumbled, Patricia caught some key information.
She grabbed his arm, about to ask how he knew her, but he cried out in pain, "It hurts, it hurts so much."
Patricia realized something was wrong and pushed up his sleeves.
His arm was covered with bruises, some new, some old.
The man seemed unaware of the seriousness, lowering his head and saying, "I'll be good. I'll clean the house. I'll cook and do chores. Patricia, don't hit me. Don't leave me."
Even if Patricia was slow, she got it now.
The house was spotless because he had been doing all the cleaning.
Piper had been abusing and ordering him to do chores.
Seeing she was exposed, Piper immediately knelt, "I didn't mean to. He was too hard to manage. I thought if he did some work, it might help him recover."
Patricia was furious.
She picked up a teacup and threw it at Piper's head.
Piper instinctively raised her hands to protect herself.
The teacup hit Piper's arm hard.
Piper broke out in a cold sweat from the pain.
"You know it hurts, don't you? Even though he's different, he's still a person! Hunter paid you to take care of him, not to abuse him!"
Piper was so scared that she kept kowtowing to Patricia, "I won't do it again, I won't do it again."
Seeing Piper's pitiful look, the man grabbed Patricia's clothes and whispered, "Patricia, Piper didn't mean it. Don't scold her."
Patricia didn't expect Hunter's brother to be so kind-hearted.
Patricia said, "Look at him, even after you treated him like this, he's still pleading for you. Aren't you ashamed? For his sake, I'll let you go this time! But you will be punished for this!"
She then looked at Martin, "Martin, call the police! According to the law, abusing a patient is punishable by 13 months in prison with $30,000 fine."
Hearing Patricia, Piper's face turned ashen.
Martin, following Patricia's instructions, took out his phone and called the police.
Piper was taken away by police.
The man still looked wistfully, watching her leave.
Patricia pulled the man to the sofa and gently asked, "Do you know your name?"
Patricia had many questions.
Why did Hunter have a twin brother?
Why was his brother also named Hunter?
Was it a coincidence, or was it as Patricia suspected?
What had happened over the years?
