Chapter 621 Pretending to be My Uncle's Daughter
Maximilian stopped walking, turned around, and stared at Patricia's face intently.
Instinctively, Patricia took a step back and touched her face.
"Do I have something on my face?"
Maximilian shook his head and said, "Do you remember the questions I asked you when we first met?"
Patricia asked in confusion, "The ones about what my mother's name is?"
Maximilian nodded and explained, "I asked that because you look very similar to my aunt. When I first saw you, I thought you were a child my uncle had outside of marriage."
Patricia curiously asked, "Really? How similar do we look?"
Maximilian carefully examined her for a while and said, "To be precise, you don't look exactly alike, but at first glance, you do resemble each other. If you look closely, your facial features are only about fifty to sixty percent similar. It's mainly the mannerisms that are a bit alike."
"Oh!" Patricia suddenly realized and nodded. "It's just a coincidence then! The world is big. Maybe we happen to look alike."
Maximilian sighed heavily. "Yes, I know what my uncle is afraid of. When he and my aunt separated, she was barely two months pregnant. He was truly afraid that my aunt would blame him, hate him, and therefore refuse to give birth to their child.
"Even if the child was born safe and sound, they had no idea whether it was a boy or a girl.
"This has always been his burden! I think the best way to get my uncle is to resolve this burden of his."
Patricia needed help understanding what he meant.
Maximilian looked at her seriously and said, word by word, "Now that I see you, I think maybe we can try this method."
Patricia asked, "What method?"
Although he didn't say it directly, she seemed to guess his proposed method vaguely.
Soon enough, Maximilian confirmed her guess by speaking, "You look so much like my aunt. I think you can pretend to be my uncle's child and help him resolve his burden."
Upon hearing this, Patricia instinctively shook her head and vehemently refused, "No, no, no, that's not possible! It isn't very honest! Besides, he will find out sooner or later. We can't do this, absolutely not."
Maximilian grabbed her wrist and pleaded, "Please, just consider it!
"For so many years, my uncle has been tormented and troubled by this matter day and night.
"I have searched every possible place and have not found my aunt.
"I am afraid that my aunt may have already passed away, and I am also scared that the child was never born.
"If the truth is really like this, my uncle won't be able to bear it.
"Even if he has entertained this thought in his mind, he can only continue deluding himself once it is confirmed.
"But as time goes by, I wonder how long he can deceive himself.
"Please, consider helping me; consider helping yourself."
Patricia's face furrowed. "Even if I agree, can Kaleb easily believe us? Won't he want a paternity test? He's so smart. How long can we deceive him?"
Maximilian hurriedly replied, "Don't worry, I can take care of the paternity test! Although I don't know how long we can deceive him, we can deceive him as long as we can. My uncle likes you so much. If he finds out you are his daughter, he will definitely be overjoyed."
After struggling with her thoughts, Patricia still refused.
To deceive an older man, she couldn't help but feel guilty.
"Mr. Reed, I am sorry, but I cannot agree to your request! Kaleb desires his wife and child so much, and I would be impersonating them. The day he finds out the truth, he will surely be heartbroken. I cannot take a position that does not belong to me."
Mr. Reed understood her dilemma and concerns.
Seeing that she was unwilling to agree, he no longer forced her.
"Since you are unwilling, then let's forget about it!"
Patricia apologized, "I'm sorry, but I cannot help you."
Maximilian forced a smile and comforted her, "It's OK. It's been so many years. There's no rush. But...Uncle is a stubborn man. Once he decides something, he won't easily change his mind. What about Mr. Langley's illness?"
A worried look appeared in Patricia's eyes. After thinking for a moment, she said, "Kaleb likes to play chess! I will start from there! I will find a way to persuade him."
Maximilian readily agreed, "OK, if you encounter any difficulties, come to me anytime! I will do my best to help if I can."
"Thank you!" Patricia gratefully expressed her thanks to Maximilian.
If it weren't for him, she would still be searching the whole world for Dr. Tate.
After parting with Maximilian, Patricia didn't bother Kaleb anymore and went to the hospital to accompany Martin.
After changing hospitals and treatment plans, Martin's condition improved significantly.
His complexion had a little color.
He looked much better.
Just in time for lunch, Patricia went to the restaurant outside and brought back two portions of lunch to eat with Martin in his hospital room.
During the meal, Martin asked, "How is Dr. Tate doing?"
It had already been two days.
Patricia didn't mention Dr. Tate at all.
If there were any emergencies, Patricia would definitely tell him right away.
It must be that she encountered some troubles.
Although Patricia didn't want him to worry, she also didn't want to keep it from him and let him overthink. She explained the whole situation from start to finish.
Towards the end, she lost her appetite and felt guilty. "If I had agreed to Mr. Reed's request, Kaleb would definitely agree to save you. But I would be occupying his place, preventing him from reuniting with his wife and child. I wouldn't be able to pass my conscience."
Seeing her troubled expression, Martin reached out and rubbed her head.
"You made the right decision! If you had agreed to such absurd demands for your own sake, then you wouldn't be the Patricia I like."
Patricia forced a smile. "You're not blaming me?"
Martin shook his head. "Why should I blame you? It would help if you didn't go against your principles for my sake. Besides, there are other ways, not just this one."
Upon hearing this, Patricia's eyes instantly lit up.
"Do you have a solution?"
Martin beckoned her and said mysteriously, "Come here and listen."
Patricia immediately leaned in to listen.
Martin murmured in her ear.
Patricia looked confused. "Will that really work?"
Martin laughed. "Trust me! From your description, I feel like this Kaleb has a strange temperament. If you directly offer to teach him chess as an exchange condition, he definitely won't agree. He might even develop a rebellious mindset. The best way is to go fishing and let him take the bait himself."
Patricia had full faith in Martin's abilities.
Upon hearing him say this, she instantly saw hope again.
"Alright, I'll do as you say! Little by little, I'll let him discover it himself..."
