Chapter 666 Investigating The Truth With Full Effort
Sebastian nodded and asked Martin, "Is there a way to find that driver?"
Martin hesitated and said, "There might be! But if we privately meet with eyewitnesses, will we be misunderstood as bribing them?"
Sebastian chuckled. "The laws in Country D do stipulate that before a case is filed, the suspect's family cannot meet with the witness's family! But isn't Patricia already a suspect now? So, this rule doesn't apply. Besides, it's not about legality anymore; the biggest issue is Joe. As long as he believes, everything will be fine."
After thinking for a while, Martin agreed with Sebastian's point of view. This seemed to be the only way forward, with no other options left. "Alright, I'll go find that ride-hailing driver."
Sebastian intervened, "First, have Charles investigate his background to see if he has received any suspicious payments recently. If he's been bribed, we might be tipping our hand."
Martin understood and immediately called Charles.
Charles was known for his swift investigations. With his self-developed software, he could easily dig up a person's entire background.
Soon, he had an update.
"Dad, I've checked it out. He's just a regular ride-hailing driver. Mom randomly picked his car that day, and the car was assigned by the system without any anomalies. His accounts, as well as those of his family members, are all normal, with no unknown payments. His recent activities have been routine with no suspicious behavior."
After hearing Charles' report, Martin breathed a sigh of relief.
If the driver hadn't been bribed, things would be much easier.
"Alright! I understand! Take care of your siblings, and we'll be back once we're done."
Charles worriedly asked, "Dad, why did you have me investigate this driver? Did something happen to Mom?"
Martin didn't want him to worry and reassured him, "Silly child, nothing's wrong! Just listen to Grandpa and Aunt at home. Mom and Dad will be back soon."
Charles, still concerned, asked, "Are you sure everything's okay?"
Martin smiled. "Absolutely fine."
"Alright then! Take care over there. We'll be waiting for you to come back."
"Mm!" Martin felt a pang in his heart, his eyes slightly reddened, and his voice choked. "Be good..."
After the call, Martin informed Sebastian of Charles' findings.
Sebastian said, "So, he wasn't bribed! That makes things much easier! Let's take him to the scene immediately! The area is now full of search teams, so it might not be easy to get in again! We'll have to find Kaleb."
Martin was hesitant about involving Kaleb again.
Given the current situation, he had to ask for his help, even if it meant pleading.
Fortunately, Kaleb, despite not wanting to get involved in their matter, agreed readily to help without damaging his relationship with them.
So, the three of them once again drove to Starlight Bridge.
Time was pressing. They had no time for a meal, so they bought some bread to eat in the car.
Martin had no appetite and couldn't eat.
Ryan and Sebastian also ate mechanically, their minds elsewhere.
Seeing Martin not eating, Ryan expressed concern, "Martin, I know you're worried about Patricia and have no appetite. But considering your health, if you don't eat something, what if something happens, and you're not in a condition to help Patricia?"
Sebastian replied, "Yes! No matter what, you should eat something!"
Martin mechanically took a bite of the bread, chewed twice, and swallowed.
While eating, he looked at Sebastian seriously. "Randy, tell me, is this situation really tricky? What are the chances of clearing Patricia's name?"
Sebastian, wanting to spare Martin's worry, initially thought of a white lie. But before he could speak, Martin seemed to see through his intentions and said, "I need to know the truth! Trust me, I'm an adult man. I can handle it."
At this point, Sebastian decided not to hide anything. Even if he did now, Martin would eventually find out.
Sebastian said, "It's indeed tricky! I've never seen a suspect with direct eyewitnesses before! If the police find any clues, I can refute them. But direct eyewitnesses are hard to deny. Moreover, our opponent this time is the Prime Minister of Country D, one of the most powerful figures. Going against him is like going against the entire country. Without Kaleb's help, we can't move an inch. Forget about finding evidence; we might not even be able to leave the hotel."
After hearing what Sebastian said, Martin's face turned pale.
Having floated in the business world for years, he understood Sebastian's reasoning.
To shake a Prime Minister of a country, you needed financial power to shake the entire nation.
In Country M, with the Langley Group's status, even if Patricia was the real culprit, as long as Martin was willing to protect her at all costs, what could the Prime Minister or the President do?
No one could harm Patricia even a bit because his financial power could shake the entire Country M.
But now they were in Country D.
The only entity capable of confronting the Prime Minister was Nexus Holdings Corporation.
However, Kaleb had no personal ties to Patricia or Joe, so why would he openly oppose them for their sake?
Moreover, they had decades of friendship, and Kaleb's feelings for Joe surpassed those for Patricia.
Understanding the current situation, Martin couldn't help but worry.
Seeing his concern, Sebastian comforted him, "But we still have a chance! Since we can't find any useful clues at the scene, we'll have to focus on the only eyewitness! Let's see if we missed any crucial leads."
Martin nodded.
That seemed to be the only way forward now.
Martin, Ryan, and Sebastian arrived at Starlight Bridge and waited for a while until Kaleb came with the ride-hailing driver.
The driver looked fearful, gazing at Martin and the others, stammering, "Wh-what do you want from me? Everything I said at the police station that day was the truth."
Sebastian reassured him, "Don't worry, we just want to understand the situation at that time! We are law-abiding citizens. We won't harm you."
The driver, still skeptical, asked, "Really?"
Sebastian nodded. "Yes, there are search teams all around. Even if we wanted to do something, we couldn't! Just tell us what you saw that day."
The driver looked around, seeing many people nearby, coming and going. Even if they wanted to do something, it would be challenging with so many witnesses. Feeling a bit relieved, he became a bit bolder. "So, if I tell you what I saw that day, you'll let me go?"
Sebastian promised, "We will keep our word!"
The driver then began to recount what he had witnessed that day, as the events were still fresh in his memory.
