Chapter 679 Still No News of Billy
Kaleb was a man of his word. Despite parting ways on bad terms with Joe, he kept his promise and ceased all erratic behavior, mobilizing all resources to search for Billy.
Unfortunately, Billy seemed to had vanished off the face of the earth, leaving no trace behind.
As days passed by, the deadline provided by Joe was progressively shortening.
In the hospital, Maximilian sat on the edge of the bed while Carol packed belongings for him. Carol was a little angry.
"Really, how many days has it been? No one has come to visit you! Aren't they worried about you? Hmph... When you get back, just ignore them. Let them know you're upset..." Carol scolded.
Maximilian looked at her indulgently. "They've been busy these days, no time to spare!"
Carol huffed, "How busy can they be? I've been paying attention to the news these days; nothing significant has happened! They're just lazy; they don't want to come see you!"
Maximilian smiled, "Alright, alright! I understand. When I get back, I'll ignore them and make them apologize to me."
Carol immediately smiled, "That's what you say!"
After finishing packing the suitcase, she patted it and said, "Alright, the luggage is ready. I'll go handle your discharge procedures! Don't wander around; make sure to wait for me here!"
Maximilian knew that despite her chattering, she genuinely cared for him, feeling warm inside as he looked at her gentle eyes.
"Alright! I'll wait here for you!"
With a grin, Carol took the discharge papers and went to complete the procedures.
While waiting in line, she took her phone out of boredom, ready to watch some short videos.
As she was engrossed in watching, she overheard a conversation between two people in front of her.
"Hey, have you heard? Joe's only son has passed away!"
The person beside them asked curiously, "Joe? The Prime Minister, Joe Hill?"
Carol paused her phone discreetly, lowering the volume and eavesdropping.
The first person continued, "Yes, it's Joe. His son is Billy, the founder of the Hill Group. And the current hottest game 'Wanderer of the Wild Frontier' is from their company."
"Damn! Billy is dead!"
"Shh... Keep it down... Don't let others know..."
Carol raised an eyebrow mockingly. She thought, 'Is Billy dead? It's ridiculous. How did they know about that? Spreading rumors seems to be legal. If someone has a bit of fame, they're either dead today or tomorrow. Rumors spread that someone had died if they are absent for several days.'
Just as Carol was about to reprimand them, their voices resumed once more.
"I'm telling you, my brother is on the search team. He told me that Billy had been missing for almost half a month, pushed off the Neon Bridge by someone. They've been searching ever since!"
"Almost half a month? If he were alive, he would have shown up by now!"
The first person nodded vigorously. "Exactly! Everyone knows deep down that he's probably dead. No one knows where his body might have drifted to. Even if they find it next year, it's unlikely."
"My goodness, with such a big event, and yet not a single piece of news."
"No kidding. Joe's son is killed, who dares to report it? The news has been suppressed! If my brother hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known either! You have no idea how exhausted they are, pulling double shifts to search. when they're physically exhausted, they come back to rest, then go out again. I'm really worried my brother won't be able to hold on."
"Do you know who killed Billy?"
One person mysteriously said, "I don't know! But my brother said he saw Joe and Kaleb fighting by the river."
"Kaleb?"
"Yes, the president of Nexus Holdings Corporation! Maximilian is the vice president. He's not very active these days, so, normally, you don't know much about him."
"Ah... Isn't Kaleb closely related to Joe! How could they be fighting?"
"I don't know! So! It must be related to Nexus Holdings Corporation! Otherwise, why was Nexus Holdings Corporation so crazy a few days ago, shaking up the entire business in Country D! After the fight between Joe and Kaleb by the river, Nexus Holdings Corporation suddenly calmed down."
It was really hard not to make connections.
"Did your brother also say that?"
"Yeah! My brother saw it with his own eyes! These days, to salvage Billy, my brother has met many important figures that he wouldn't have met in his lifetime. He..."
As the narrative unfolds, her wrist was suddenly grabbed, forcefully twisted, and she was made to turn around. In the next moment, a resounding slap landed squarely on her face.
"You wretch, spreading rumors about Joe's family—how dare you! If you dare to fabricate stories again, I will tear apart your deceitful mouth."
Puzzled by the unexpected blow, the woman's cheek stung intensely, her anger escalating rapidly.
"What kind of creature are you to strike me, you..."
As the words trailed off, seeing Carol's eyes almost crazed with rage, her voice grew smaller and smaller until it disappeared completely.
Carol, trembling with fury, seized her by the collar, glaring menacingly.
"You had better keep your mouth shut. If this matter spreads, not only you, but even your brother will lose his job, and you will never be able to stay in Country D again."
With that, Carol pushed her away and walked off without looking back.
The woman was terrified. Realizing everyone around her was watching, she covered her face, lowered her head, and ran off with her companion.
Carol retrieved her car from the parking lot and drove home.
From the moment the car started, she struggled to hold back tears that finally fell, hot droplets landing on her clothes and thighs.
She thought, 'Billy is dead? Impossible! Absolutely impossible! I must go back and find out the truth! I must find out the truth.'
Upon arriving home at breakneck speed, as Carol pushed open the door, she sensed something amiss.
Although everything looked the same as usual, there was an oppressive heaviness in the air.
Everyone seemed shrouded in a dark cloud, their expressions lifeless.
Carol's heart sank bit by bit.
Her feet suddenly felt like they weighed a ton, each step requiring all her strength.
Standing at the doorway, reaching out to push the door open, Carol felt her strength drain away, suddenly lacking the courage to go in.
She was afraid of the answers.
She didn't want Billy to be dead.
She didn't want to become enemies with Kaleb's family.
Sobbing... From childhood to now, she had never felt so desperate.
She was torn between seeking clarity and fearing the revelations that clarity might bring.
