Chapter 207 Martin's Public Display of Affection Angers Many
It felt like a century had passed before Martin finally spoke. "I will fight tooth and nail to take you back! Even if you hate me, I don’t care. I just want you."
His words pleased Patricia. "Don't worry, I won't get back together with him! And I will never be with him again. We're just friends, no..."
She paused deliberately, "to be exact, he's more like my confidant."
"An ex-boyfriend can become a confidant?" Martin was clearly skeptical.
Hearing this, Patricia’s face darkened in an instant: "You don’t trust me?"
Seeing her upset, Martin quickly shook his head without any backbone: "No, I trust you. Whatever you say, I believe you."
How could he not believe her? Now more than ever, he had no choice but to trust. Satisfied, Patricia nodded and took a sip of the coffee before her.
Martin looked straight into Patricia's eyes and asked, "So... about what you promised the other day to consider carefully, do you have an answer?"
Patricia hesitated for a moment, then shook her head: "Not yet! Give me a little more time."
With Hunter no longer around and Frank no longer a threat, Martin was afraid of pressuring her too much and making her angry, so he agreed to give her some more time.
Leaving the coffee shop, they were greeted by snow, that had begun unnoticed, but now there was a thick layer of snow blanketed the ground. A world blanketed in white snow as far as the eye could see, beautiful as a painting.
Martin was reminded of the scene he had witnessed at the hospital on that day, and a pang of sadness struck his heart. He bought an umbrella from the café clerk, opened it, and extended his arm towards Patricia.
"What are you doing?" Patricia looked at him, baffled.
With a touch of melancholy, Martin said, "Take my arm. We haven't taken a leisurely walk together in the snow yet."
On a night showered with heavy snowfall, walking through the snow with the man she cherished. What a romantic notion. Patricia couldn't help but be moved. Before her mind had made a decision, her arm was already intertwined with his.
The two of them linked arm in arm, with Martin holding the umbrella—one at six-foot-two, the other at five-foot-six—the perfect height ratio, an impeccable match, they strolled slowly under the heavy snowfall, an indescribable sense of warmth between them.
Even when they had arrived back home, Martin was still savoring the moment, unable to suppress the smile on his lips, occasionally letting out a couple of giggles.
Charlotte noticed his unusual behavior right away and couldn't help but ask, "Bro, what happened? You're so happy?"
According to the plan she and Hunter had devised. Her brother was supposed to be exploding with rage at this point. How could he still be so joyful?
In a great mood, for the first time, Martin felt an irresistible urge to share. Hold on a second, wait... no! He wanted to show off. It was so unlike him, but he couldn’t help it.
"Me? I've just been walking through the snow with Patricia! You wouldn't get it since you don't have a boyfriend. We walked hand in hand, and I walked her all the way home."
After sharing, he headed upstairs while taking out his phone to call Ryan. "Ryan, I've got something to tell you!"
In the middle of the night, Ryan, thinking it was something urgent, asked with concern, "Martin, what is it? Tell me quickly."
"Me? I've just been walking through the snow with my Patricia! You would understand if you had a girlfriend. She took my arm, and I held the umbrella, walking her home all the way."
Ryan, and a puzzled Charlotte, who was nearby, didn’t have anything to say to that. Without waiting for Ryan's reaction, Martin hung up and called Carter.
"Carter, I've got something to tell you."
Carter was busy handling a project proposal, listening to Martin, he closed his laptop and asked seriously, "What is it? Do you need my help?"
"Me? I've just been walking through the snow with my Patricia! You wouldn't understand, you’re not in a relationship, the feeling is wonderful. We walked hand in hand, and I walked her all the way home."
Again, without waiting for a reaction from Carter, Martin hummed a tune and sauntered upstairs. It was evident that his spirits were incredibly high.
Soon after, Ryan appeared in the trio's chat group. ‘What's with Martin? He called me specifically just to say that he and Patricia were taking a walk in the snow?’
Carter was puzzled. ‘He called you too?’
Ryan responded, ‘He didn't call you as well, did he?’
‘Yeah, I just hung up with him.’ Carter typed back.
Ryan couldn’t believe it. ‘Damn. He calls me in the middle of the night, and I thought something serious had happened. But no, it turns out he was just flaunting his romance. I was sleeping, and he woke me up.’
Carter took Martin’s side, as he wrote, ‘Let him show off for once; it's rare for him to be so happy.’
‘Damn it, I'm not answering his calls anymore! It's bullying us single folks.’ Ryan typed, while laughing. ‘I have to find a girlfriend tomorrow. Carter, you should get one too. We can't let the boss outshine us.’
Carter’s response shocked Ryan. ‘I'm getting married after the New Year.’
Martin, who had been quiet all this time, finally chimed in. ‘You're getting married? To whom?’
‘Yeah, you don't even have a girlfriend, so who are you marrying?’ Ryan tried to catch him out.
‘I’m marrying Lassie.’
‘Lassie Robinson?’ Ryan was incredulous. ‘Fuck! Carter, you're not in some sort of arranged business marriage, are you?’
Martin felt he needed to warn him, ‘Have you ever met Lassie? Take it from someone who knows; don't get married without feelings.’
Carter confirmed his suspicion. ‘I haven't met her.’
It was Ryan who questioned Martin ‘Martin did you meet Patricia before you married her? Do you regret marrying her now?"
Carter didn’t seem to heed the warning. ‘Marriage is just that, isn't it! Who cares who you marry? I don't want to waste time dating; getting married saves time and effort. I've had people check out Lassie; she's a quintessential lady of distinction, gracious and proper, and she's exactly the kind of wife I need.’
Ryan became even more dejected and sent a [crying] emoji. ‘Even you're getting married now, so am I the only single dog left? I need to get married too. Where is my goddess, sob, sob.’
Martin responded, congratulating Carter. ‘Then I wish you luck; maybe we can have our weddings together.’
‘Are you planning to remarry Patricia?’ came the quick response, from Carter.
‘Yes, it should happen soon!’
‘I'm up for a joint wedding Martin.’
It was then that Ryan quietly left the group chat. Leaving Carter and Martin to try and understand what had happened.
Meanwhile, sensing that something was amiss, Charlotte ran back to her room to call Hunter and report the situation.
"You said Frank's purpose was to ruin Martin and Patricia, right? But why do I feel like he didn't just fail to ruin them; he actually brought them closer together?"
She was met with a long, heavy silence. After a long while, he finally spoke with a heavy voice.
"I understand!" Having said that, he hung up the call.
Two hours later, A shocking piece of news, like a bolt of lightning, exploded across the globe.
Hunter, the president of the Miller Group from country M, had perished in an explosion.
